People are already pointing out the irony about a game who has an anti-capitalist message being done with Amazon money.

It's the nature of living in a capitalist society, unfortunately. I highly doubt anyone involved in the actual production of this show really has a choice in the matter; it was likely either agree to work with Amazon, or nothing.

But we'll see.

[up][up][up] There's still no trailers or hard details, but someone could dig up the vague breadcrumbs we've gotten so far which amount to two teasers, the creators describing it as 'wacky' and the leaked set images so far.

All we really have is that it involves the yet-unseen "Vault 32" which seems to have some rustic farm buildings inside of it for whatever experimental reason. The Brotherhood and Enclave seem to be involved in the story per some leaked set images. Some shooting was done in New York City but it's unclear if any part of the series is actually set there or if it's just them using it as a stand-in for some other big city.

An alleged summary of the first episode posted to IMDB claims that it will involve the Brotherhood invading "the Vault City" and two protagonists trying to save people, but there's no source and IMDB is freely-editable by the public, which combined with the typo suggests it's a hoax.

Didn't one of the original pitches for a "Fallout Movie" from ages ago also involve a "Vault City" under attack?

vault City is from fallout 2 and I really wish they could adapt the story of Fallout 1 instead

I should correct myself. My recollection was that it was a city. Like... establishing shots of riding a raised train through a city inside a massive vault size of Vault City. Which I don't think is accurate to any version of the Fallout vaults unless I really missed something.

There have been weirder Vaults, not even counting the experiments. Fallout 4 had the Triggerman Vault, where they saved a bunch of money by connecting it to a natural cave system or whatever it was. So a Vault with way too much interior space could have been made.

Hell, make that the experiment. "What will people do if they have no rooms or buildings, just one massive open space?"

Or a Truman Show sort of deal where no one knows that the war happened and think they're in a Vault Tec compound for some other reason.

I think Fallout 2 is superior to Fallout 1 in all ways.

Almost a year later, but there have been some updates, albeit mostly in the form of leaked set pictures. Not going to link them but to summarize a couple:

    Leaked info
  • The yet-unseen-in-the-games Vaults 32 and 33 are a major part of the story
  • One of them seems to have, for some unknown reason, had a rural old west-looking town built inside of it for its experiment
  • One leaked set pic shows two actors, one in full ghoul makeup/prosthetics smoking a cigarette, and both in Vault suits, chilling and sharing a soda in front of a Vault 33 flag
  • Some set pics and casting information suggest the show has at least one segment set in the Southwest/West Coast region; we might outright see the Mojave wasteland and NCR
  • Recent leak shows an East Coast-looking set with some neat details — a Brotherhood-looking person is preparing to enter a ruined "Hawthorne Medical Labaratories" facility. The company is, per the big logo painted in front of the building and some writing on a nearby van, a subsidiary of Vault-Tec

If the series doesn't start with a narration saying "War never changes," I'll be disappointed.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't. Hasn't every game used that opener? For good reason, too; it's an excellent and memorable way to set the tone.

Fallout 4 didn't. They repeated the line like four times, but so wildly different from the original that it verged on "They didn't get the point of it" for me.

I don't think the spin-off games did either. Not sure about 76 but I would assume not.

Even if they *say* the line, I don't know if they *get* the line. Because Bethesda sure as shit don't and they're the IP holders right now.

Well Microsoft is the IP holders now.

But I absolutely believe Fallout 3 is one of the best in the franchise.

It's just 4 and 76 that fell short.

Hasn't every game used that opener?

Fallout 4 didn't

It... literally does, though? The only difference is that the narration is being delivered in-character and not by Ron Perlman?

I don't think the spin-off games did either. Not sure about 76 but I would assume not.

Tactics and 76 do also. Brotherhood of Steel is the only game that doesn't which makes sense, given... everything about it.

And if we could not turn this thread into off-topic ranting and mockery about how bad fans of [insert game in the series here] are that'd be great, thanks

So who is writing this? We know who is producing it, and Westworld was close enough to the Fallout theme that it's a decent sign, but I don't think we've heard anything about the writing.

Or the actors, for that matter. I think all we have is the release date.

I hope it's not too off-topic, but:

Brotherhood of Steel is the only game that doesn't which makes sense, given... everything about it.

I've, thankfully, never played Brotherhood of Steel. But one thing "interesting" I've noticed about the game is that there's actually not much of Fallout's specific brand imagery in it. It's almost like it's a Shoddy Knock Off or Writing Around Trademarks version of itself. This is pretty bizarre because you'd expect such a sell-out product to constantly spam brand imagery.

Though if I had to guess it's because, while it's a sell-out product, they're not actually trying to pander to Fallout fans per se. Also they want to look modern and edgy, which is at odds with Fallout's retrofuturistic and ironic wholesome aesthetic.

Fallout went through several different cycles and developers who had very different ideas about what the games were about, after all.

Brotherhood of Steel and Tactics, for example, had the idea the Brotherhood were the heroes of the setting when they were definitely...not.
