A series based on the first set of books is in development and Rick Riordan plans on being involved.

Very exciting. I'm assuming each book will be adapted as an individual season giving us 5 seasons of PJO.

Oh really. This is great. I love that book series. I hope they do a Heroes of Olympus series afterwards.

I can already feel my inner young me being super excited at the prospect of actually getting a more accurate representation of the books on to screen while my inner older me is veering way in the opposite direction.

Hoping the casting's good, it'll be interesting to see what they prioritize for this iteration

I'm glad Percy Jackson's getting another chance. Those movies were truly awful.

Each of the five original books has enough material for a 13 episode season.

Hoping that the series does really well so we can get Ho O and the Kane Chronicles adapted as well.

I'm so glad that Riordan doesn't trust anyone but himself to make sure this is accurate. I remember hearing that he hated how the movies turned out.

Oh, please let this be good. I’ve been waiting for a proper adaptation of Percy Jackson since forever.

As someone who liked the first movie and would have preferred an animated series over a live action one, I'm cautiously optimistic. Could be better than the movies but it could also be worse.

I do hope they get a man of color to play Percy though. Maybe it's just the part of the fandom I interact with, but I cannot see Percy as white. It worked for the movies and musical apparently but I'd still rather he wasn't here.

And that matters...why?

I'm genuinely curious as to why you want him to be colored so badly.

I'm pretty sure Percy was white in the books.

Not counting the gods, there are two characters of color in the first series that come to mind (both of whom died) so I can kinda get it.

Doesn't necessarily have to be Percy, but having a diverse cast wouldn't be bad as long as the spirit of the character remains.

Of course. In the...*ugh*...movies, Grover was black.

Demigods are all over the world so I have no doubt that there'll probably be a lot of differently-raced kids in the background as various minor characters.

Hopefully they get to adapt the Heroes of Olympus series too given how racially diverse they are.

I'd like to see an adaptation of the Kane Chronicles too.

Shape-shifting was a pretty standard M.O. among the Greek gods, if you can turn into a bull or a Swan you can be a human of any colour you want - so a racially diverse cast makes sense.

You shouldn't have diversity for the sake of having diversity.

It's not for the sake of it though, Zeus in particular is infamous for not keeping it in his pants and he's been at it for hundreds or even thousands of years by now, the other gods aren't much better. For all the godly offspring to be white kids makes no sense whatsoever.

That's good, that material was never the right length for movies. I still wish it had been a cartoon instead, but this will have to do.

And that matters...why?

It doesn't really matter, it's just something I'd like to see as someone who isn't white for the representation it'd bring. Frankly, I don't like the idea that diversity needs to be justified.

Obviously Percy was written to be white but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice if they gave us a Percy of color. I can accept a white Percy if the adaptation is good, I just personally think him being nonwhite would be nice.

Kane Chronicles is getting a Netflix adaption[1]. Hopefully that means the crossover stories can get adapted someday.

Another update on the series from author Rick Riordan:

  • We do not yet have an official “green light,” but things are moving along nicely in my estimation. The pilot script has now made it through the very highest levels of Disney execs and everybody likes it. We have met with the studio heads and streaming service execs, and we feel a lot of love and support from Disney, which I really appreciate!
  • Our core production team (me, Becky, our show-runners and our fellow producers) have spent the last year learning to work together efficiently and effectively (through Zoom, of course). I’m delighted to say that our thinking is aligned in terms of what we want this show to be, and I remain confident we will make something great for you all to watch. Again . . . it just takes time. A lot of time.
  • Right now, we are starting to plan next steps so we can give our partners at the studio and streaming service a good comprehensive picture of what this show will require. What’s the first season look like? (Hint: It will follow the plot of The Lightning Thief). What will the budget look like? (Hint: Good TV ain’t cheap. Quality-wise, this has to stand toe-to-toe with Disney+ hits like WandaVision and The Mandalorian.)
  • Who do we have in mind for directors? (Hint: I can’t give you any hints, but we are having conversations about this.)
  • Casting? (No, we are still not there yet, but we have begun to talk about how the process will work when we do get there.) At a guess, I would say we have a couple more months of these conversations and planning meetings before we get our finalized game plan and (hopefully) get approval to move forward.
  • I am optimistic it will happen. There is a lot of excitement and momentum, and it really helps that Disney understands just how wonderful and massive a fanbase Percy Jackson has, so thank you all for that! I will, as always, keep you posted, but if you see other information or “inside scoops” floating around social media, remember it is just clickbait. What I’ve told you above is as much as anyone knows, including me.

Yess the show needs that sweet mouse house money.

I don't think a book can carry thirteen whole episodes. Maybe 2 books per season?

(As an aside, that blog post really makes me appreciate Riordan. I may have outgrown his writing, but it's nice that he's so committed to using his platform to diversify YA literature.)

Agreed although has it actually been said how many episodes per season they're gonna be.
