Preserving and publishing deleted content

I've been thinking that maybe we should ensure that content deleted from this wiki isn't gone forever, for the sake of preserving Internet history. After all, the Lost Media Wiki tries to ensure that rediscovered media doesn't fall through the cracks again, so why shouldn't we try to save as much of this site's history as we can?

I've been trying to do that myself, but I'm only one man and I can't get everything. Besides, there are some things that were removed before I discovered this site. So I'd like to suggest we come up with some means of preserving content that gets removed.

If any of you have any ideas, or any criticism of this proposal of mine, please don't hesitate to share.

If you want to archive TV Tropes content for your own use, that's up to you. You cannot publish it yourself without attribution, and you may not make money off it per our Creative Commons license.

This site is a wiki, and so its content will change over time. Attempting to preserve some part of it in a static form seems like a lost cause. There are also parts of it we'd rather not be seen again, ever, like the Fetish Fuel era.

We don't provide copies of deleted content on request.

I'm just questioning what sort of content you think warrants archiving.

[up][up] Two questions:

1. Do we already have any means of ensuring deleted content doesn't get removed permanently?

2. Why do you not do that? Not complaining, just want to know your reasons.

[up] I think the better question is what isn't.

[up] Pages that violate content policy, pages of things such as Fetish Fuel and Troper Tales, works that had to be moved to a new page for title or namespace issues, tropes we cut as being completely untropeworthy, spam pages, Troper Pages for banned tropers, pages on the PRLC...the list goes on and on. Most of what we put on the cutlist is stuff that has no reason to exist on the wiki in some form.

archive.org already preserves old versions of TV Tropes. Any other archiving mechanism seems redundant.

And as people have said, most deleted content is cut for being poor quality.

1. Nope. We can recover versions of articles from history (a mod-only function) but only as long as the article doesn't get cut and remade. History may be purged from time to time as storage requirements dictate.

2. Because this is a wiki, not a static site. Anyway, there are already sites that do this sort of thing as noted above.
