We had an ATT about splitting works, and the issue of how crosswicking should work with tropes that occur multiple times in a series.

Should we only wick back to the trope page from the general series page, or do we crosswick from the series page and individual entries?

I've got a Useless Item for VideoGame.Epic Battle Fantasy 5, and VideoGame.Epic Battle Fantasy 4 already has some.

Do I move the entry from VideoGame.Epic Battle Fantasy 4 to VideoGame.Epic Battle Fantasy?

Or what?

It depends on the context of the example. If it occurs in a specific work in a series, that we have a distinct article for, then link to that article. Note that Recaps should not count in this regard, although I'd like to make that work for a future redesign. If it occurs over the entire series, link to the series landing page.

That "should not" reads like we should not be Cross Wicking episode recaps. Was that intentional?

If you are writing an example on The Hero about Batman: The Animated Series, then you would link to that article, not to the Recap for the episode where The Hero occurs. Perhaps that's a poor example, but recaps are not primary articles and shouldn't be directly wicked unless you are referring precisely and uniquely to that episode.

This is because, when finding related links, we use the main page of a work, not its subpages. Recaps are still technically subpages even though they serve some of the functions of a work article. Note that serial works like novels or films would generally have a primary article for each major work, in a medium namespace like Literature or Film. That is where the wicks should go.

Edited to add: Something like this is acceptable, though...

With that edit, I believe I understand the instruction to be "Never link to just the recap page; the series is the primary work article. Wicks to recap pages should always be in addition to a wick for the series page."

Wait, so this is all about wicking from the Trope page to the work page...

I assume you mean to imply that crosswicking should always happen, so, if a page is wicked from the trope page, it should always also wick back to the trope page.

[up] Well, yeah, but the wick-back doesn't have to be on the main page for the work. It can be in a subpage. You wouldn't link to TheHeroDies.Live Action TV on the work page, would you? But what crazysamaritan said is correct.
