Myne was like five.

This is medieval times, his salary is not equivalent to 50000 dollars. I'd find it hard to believe it's 10% of that.

I'm just trying to get a rough conversion to current day equivalent, so when people get excited about getting paid 1 medium copper to make an item, I can say 'that is like $5 in the current day.'

I don't think they have properly thought through relative prices. The costs for ink and parchment are so high that nobody would use them. It would be cheaper to use engraved copper sheets.

There is a greater disparity in wealth compared to our current times. This can make price comparisons difficult. The cost ratio between, say, subsistence food for one day and a fancy set of clothes will be quite different between their world and ours.

I do more or less forgive them for not quite getting the economics right, given that most fantasy worlds don't think about economics at all. We couldn't even start to do this sort of analysis in a standard isekai world.

Ah, this episode made me so emotional! Also the more episodes I watch and spoilers I stumble on, the more the ed song makes want to cry for some reason. Also I stumbled upon this explanation for the the whole reincarnation process courtesy of the author herself

She's replying to someone asking about if they were the same person just with Urano's memories suddenly returning, or if original Myne was killed and Urano was a different person who took over.

She says that how she thought of it when writing was that Urano's memory and personality from her past life were at the bottom, and memories of the next life wrap up and cover those memories, developing Myne's consciousness. Normally the experiences of living would thickly cover those memories of a past life and they would never come to the surface. But Myne's disease ate away at her self-consciousness, and trapped in bed she was unable to form any new experiences.

The only place where Myne could experience new things was in her dreams (presumably of Urano's memories), where she could run, eat as much as she wanted, do what she wanted. And so Myne started thinking about how she wanted to sleep and dream forever, how she wanted to be Urano. She resented her father who wouldn't let her do anything, her mother for not giving her a healthy body, and Tulli for always having fun outside.

When she was close to death, what she reached for wasn't her family but Urano's memories, throwing away her own self and becoming Urano out of her own free will. Even if she got Urano's memories and personality she was still in Myne's sickly body, but her child's brain didn't really grasp that.

Sounds like a Distinction Without a Difference to me. Either way, Myne is dead and the only difference is that her heart apparently never stopped beating.

As far as money goes, I started rereading the stuff I'd gone through and found a scene I'd been thinking about in regards to that. Gunther buys two beers and a plate of sausage for one large copper, so let's say that's in the ballpark of ten dollars. I forgot that there were no medium silver or gold coins so I suppose the value of the money isn't that crazy.

Its more of a clarification for people who assume Urano is a body stealing parasite. In the end its standard "I reincarnated with memories of my past life which suddenly took over after x accident" fanfare with more thought being put into the loss of the initial body wielder.

Where does the wealth of the nobles come from?

We (will*) get to see lots of dealings of merchants, but there is no mention of taxes.

Were they doing intercity trading, it could hardly have not been mentioned when traveling merchants were discussed.

There is very little trade of magic items to the commoners.

My best guess is that they have large estates. Although we've pretty much only seen a city, we'd expect perhaps 90% of the population to be rural.

  • I'm reading ahead in the light novels, but this isn't any significant spoiler.

Aw, damn. The machine translation isn't one of those 'they get the nuances a bit wrong or flip a sentence sometimes' type MT but one that's genuinely difficult to read. Guess I won't be finding out more about the story any time soon.

I feel like having Frieda's hair ornament contrast her clothing and hair would have been better. Red roses on pink hair lacks impact.

Bam. Devouring partially explained as well as why Myne's obsession with books is actually good for her.

Well, I'm having a lot of fun with this.

From being ambivalent on starting to watch on a recommendation, I started watching the anime, caught up, read up all the translated LN I could find and then read up the whole manga that was translated so far...

So yeah, I'm really enjoying this one.

Was a nice episode. Benno shows himself as an ally, Main brings money back home, meets fun money devil Frieda and learns of her illness for the first time. Looking forward to next episode

I see from elsewhere on the internet that there are currently 21 light novels published in Japan, and an estimate the entire story will take 32 volumes. Having read the first 5 light novels in translation, I estimate that the anime season will cover the first 3. So one season of anime will be less than 10% of the entire story. Also I think I read (not certain) that in the latest Japanese volume, Myne is 12 - so the leisurely passage of time is set to continue without any big time skips.

The web novel is like six hundred chapters long with the Soldier's Daughter arc taking up something like a hundred chapters. Ish. I don't notice any great changes between the WN and anime except making Myne a little less selfish so I wouldn't expect the pacing to be wildly different either.

So, we can also expect the story to never be finished in the anime, unless this somehow becomes some huge success, right? A pity.

I think it's a fairly popular series, but expecting 6+ seasons is probably a little much.

Neat. I don't see another five seasons after this or whatever but that'll at least get us into content I'm not familiar with.

So the second season has started. Or at least is up on Crunchyroll alongside two extra episodes that are side stories from what the titles say. Haven't watched them but I'm wondering if I need to before I dive into season two.

I will say that while I too missed Benno and Myne arguing, it was for different reasons as I'm up to date in the English translation of the novels which are are in Part 4 while the first episode of Season 3 covered the first few chapters of Part 2, Volume 3 (of 4 total for Part 2).

Readjusting to where the characters are in the anime has been a bit of an exercise.
