Okay, so why aren't you supposed to sing "Stairway to Heaven" in the US?
I don't know. I only remember it as a joke from Wayne's World. Maybe it has to do with the length of the song?

I can only imagine it's because everybody sings it and everyone is sick of it, but I wanted to make sure.

Also, I am never visiting a kareoke in Thailand, just to be safe. XD

I imagine the question is coming from Shoko Asahara's karaoke habits?

Funny story, learning that from those episodes once helped me answer a Jackbox game question.

Yep, I'm on Part 3.

Ever heard of Dan Carlin, from Hardcore History? He once paraphrased a quote as: "The Japanese are just like everyone else, only more so"

Guess that applies even to their cults.

The thing that's always stuck with me re: cults is the hosts explanation of the Sunk Cost Fallacy in relation to them in, I think, ep 3 of Aum Shinrikyo. The idea that rejecting the cult means rejecting potentially years' worth of past decisions can be genuinely frightening.

Also, a small spoiler of you've finished those episodes, Hail Muffins, the series ends with Asahara in prison, but he has since been executed. It was about 2-3 years ago, I think.

Edit: I'm excited, I was looking over recent episodes for Wizard and the Bruiser and discovered they recently did an episode on my favorite movie of all time: Spaceballs!

Yesterday's episode is the first of a multi-part aboutt the lobotomy.

Also, you will never be able to look, write or think abot the word "catharsis" without snickering again.

I've been listening to JFK, and in case anyone besides me cares: the Pope during most of his presidency was Saint John XXIII, but the Pope during his assassination was Paul VI, both of whom, as it happens, were Italian.

You know, listening to the lobotomy episode, it's because of people like "Dr" Freeman that I find the idea of Hell more conforting than the idea of Heaven.

BTW, I had a class on the Tuskegee hospital, you know what the worst thing about that experiment is? If memory serves, people already knew what the longterm effects of syphilis were, so the entire experiment was pointless.

I'm listening to the Tall White episode, and I got to ask: do all UFO episodes make it seem like your brain is rotting out?

sgamer82 Since: Jan, 2001

Some more than others. They aren't my usual preference so my memory of them isn't as clear as other episodes.

To be fair, though, they do warn you up front that this episode will make you dumber.

I mean, it's funny, it's just, all this UFO stuff is so stupid.

No wonder Henry said to get high before listening.

I sometimes feel that way about the Conspiracy episodes. I often wonder how this big, elaborate conspiracy makes more sense than "People are dumbasses". For less insane alien episodes, it might be worth looking up soem of the abduction based ones, like 284, The Travis Walton Abudiction (the one that sparked Fire in the Sky), or 169-170, Betty and Barney Hill. They're a bit more serious in that they go over how these events affected the peoples lives more negatively.

I really liked the JFK one, though, because it's one of the few where there is grounds fir a conspiracy, and it's actually a pretty good history lesson.

I still need to get around to listening to that one. The historical ones are pretty neat. I still like that long list of everything that could kill a person in the Donner Party episode, which included "getting lost in the tall grass"

Is there a list of what each book they used for each episode?

Not just on "On the Left", but for the others like No Dogs in Space

If there is I wouldn't know where to find it. Their subreddit might be a place to try, though.

Here for LPOTL, but I don't think the other casts have an equivalent.

Just got my second Last Podcast shirt in today. I got the first one, the Gef the Talking Mongoose shirt, a little while back. Today I got their The Last Men shirt. Because I'm an occasional Tabletop player, I couldn't resist pre-ordering their Hellish Rebuke shirt.

The last one's still available to order for just short of a week or so, ending 7/31.

I think most mainstream religions these tend to disaprove of suicide, but whatever, guys, whatever.

I know where that debate tends to go.

I've just finished Heaven's Gate, for context, and the website is indeed still active and that is fucking terrifying.

Though not nearly as much as everyone's reactions to it back then, I mean Jesus, people, at least wait a year until you start to make fun of the 39 people who just killed themselves.

It's just me, or was there just a lack of empathy in America around the 90's?

You know what that reminds me? Of when some arsehole tried to commit a terrorist attack on a furry convention and one of the few news station that covered the story felt it was more important to make fun of the people in the event than the attack itself.

I mean I get making fun of furries, hell, I've got more bestiality jokes in my head than McDonald's has horrible burgers, but c'mon, at least wait a month. Time and place for everything.

I just finished their new Slender Man episode myself. I've been debating sending it to my niece, who was into Slender Man stuff when she was a kid (she's currently 20)

Now Slender Man is one if the few Internet phenomena I'm interested in because it's kind of nuts just how much it grew out of the confines of the Internet.

I mean hell, someone sent a picture of it to one of my mom's Whatsapp groups and she asked us to explain what it was!

And if my mom heard of it, then damn, it got big.

Just about finished The Indifferent Stars above and, wow, the lads gave a pretty good summary of the events but it really pales compared to the full account.

And the Donner Party is hardly the worse of such disaster: the book briefly talks about the Erebus and Terror expedition, and the six-years' long wandering that claimed the lives of all of the ships' crews among the icy wasteland they got stuck in.

Really hope they cover that one.
