[up] All the mistakes they are making are excusable because they are kids. Also the part I said about talking too much may feel lighter in the manga, because talking takes less time in manga than in anime.

[up][up] Their expressions are indeed less over-the-top in the manga. And I think Sister Krone was introduced a bit later…

[up]Yeah, I've already noticed some things the anime has skipped (or at least rearranged). Can't be helped, I suppose.

I guess that means it's just the anime direction. It does make for some striking shots, and the voice actors sell it well too, but it does result in scenes where Izabella should definitely be able to tell that the kids who are hanging back from the group and looking shell-shocked are the ones who are defying her.

Though it does seem like she's got her suspicions.

It's been fun.

Finally got around to seeing the second episode. I'd give it another episode or two before we get out of the orphanage, although I have no idea how it went in the manga. Leaving that for later.

Krone seems like an interesting addition. Based on her size and build, Krone seems to me like the strong, gatekeeper type to Izabelle's more strategic one, but the OP bundles her with the children for whatever reason, so I'm unsure of what to make of her.

And yeah, the kids aren't being subtle at all, but then, they're kids. I'm still putting my money on only a handful being able to escape the orphanage.

...I was referring more to her size, but yes, now that you've mentioned, I do notice how that sounds kinda racist.

Hold up, let me rewrite that.

I feel like Krone might get swayed, because of how the OP shows her. Izabella is obviously evil even in the OP, but Krone isn't - and realistically, no matter how many children they eventually escape with, they probably wouldn't be able to get past both adults if they were both seriously trying to keep the kids in.

It's been fun.

Episode 3! We get to see more of Sister Krone. They did a rather good job at capturing both her goofy and her scary sides while making her facial expressions a bit less absurd than in the manga. That doll scene was pretty hilarious. [lol]

And that scene at the end where the sound suddenly gets louder to indicate that she's found Emma was masterfully done.

…I wondered how they were gonna pronounce Scribbles' name in the anime, but it turns out they didn't even try. Oh well.

There were a few Off-Model scenes in this ep, unfornately, though nothing the blurays can't fix. There's also a similar issue as the Death Note anime, where some of the dialogue has to be excised to make the whole thing easier to digest. Nothing crucial, thankfully, but it can water down the "mind game" aspect a little bit sometimes. Like removing that part where Izabella made our heroes do all kinds of chores to keep them busy and divert their attention before Krone and Carol arrived.

I sincerely wanted her to shut up in every scene she was in.

Ah. Krone is a third party of sorts. Got it. Same side as Izabella, but different goal.

Also, she's blatantly nuts.

Anyhow, the children continue to be as unsubtle as humanly possible in this episode. It might have actually come back to bite them in their asses this time around, although given how quick and easy it was to spot a traitor, I get the feeling this isn't so straightforward.

[up]I get the feeling Krone's just a starting villain, the kind of enemy that's not going to stick around for long. Super strong, ambitious, planning to thwart a calmer and seemingly more analytical villain, all those things generally indicate a villain that's just the first hurdle to clear before we get to some real dangers.

Although if the children don't spend the entire season just trying to get out of the orphanage, I don't see how Izabella can last long as a villain either.

Something I saw pointed out is that ep 3 made a reference to a manga scene that the anime excluded: when Ray mentions the year 2015.

Yeah, that was weird. Especially since a later calendar seemed to imply it was 2045. I feel like I just wrote that dialogue off instead of actually understanding it.

It's been fun.

Ah, that's still there? Okay then, the discrepancy is because the year is 2045, but all of the information in the house only goes up to 2015.

For some reason they kept out the scene when the trio realize that. Just to clarify why that particular year was mentioned.

I mean, it's just kind of a weird sentiment for him to express anyway. If as far as they know it's 2015, it makes no sense to then say that that tech couldn't exist in 2015 - because it clearly does. It'd be like picking up an iPhone and saying 'there's no way tech like this could exist in 2019'. What supposed baseline of technological progression is he comparing it to? Why would he have any framework for comparison at all - and why are the kids given maps or told anything at all about the world outside? Sure, the farm selects for older, smarter kids, so eventually someone would ask about what's out there - but a constructed lie would be much easier than pretending that the whole world is fine and they're just not allowed outside because they're orphans.

Unless Isabella is grooming some of them to escape, it honestly makes no sense.

It's been fun.

I think you misunderstood. They know it's 2045, but the information in the House doesn't cover anything past 2015 - it skips thirty years.

Oh God! Natural light!

Maybe I need to rewatch the episode, but even then, it sounds like they made a misstep removing that scene.

Finally watched the third episode

I thought Isabella's insistence on having the children stay until shipping time was to test security or smth, because it feels odd to suggest her caring about them when presumably this farming plant has been going for a few generations.

Krone's character is fine, it works well into the setting and as a contrast to Isabella but her portrayal is a bit of misstep.

Was a bit surprised that they showed the demon hierarchy this early on but it was mainly a cryptic teaser. The hard swerve from what was up to this point fairly contemporary to something out of fantasy on the demons' side makes the outside world a bit more of an enigma.

Cannot wait for Isabella to also pull off those athletic stunts in the pursuit of children

Gilda being a traitor is being very obviously telegraphed but her motivations remain oblique so eh as long as the payoff works. but I think one of the younger kids is just as likely to have innocently blabbed.

[up] Izabella has a reputation to uphold. Everything must go according to schedule, or it'll be considered a failure on her part.

…Speaking of which, has the anime shown the scene where she reveals her own cattle number? It's kind of an important point, but I don't remember seeing it yet… maybe they've just postponed it.

It hasn't happened yet, but she identifies herself on the radio with a number that fits the format, so if that's what you mean, then it actually has happened.

It's a scene where you actually see the brand on her neck- I'd need to check to make certain, but I feel like it happened pretty early on, so it probably got cut. I mean, you can piece together the same information from her conversation with Krone and the radio conference, so the plot still works just fine, but I still feel like her looking into a mirror and voicing a dark determination to survive is a reasonably important character beat that isn't explicitly present in this version. And not a particularly time consuming one- it was, like, one page in the manga.

"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."

Manga-wise, the specific scene happens at the end of the same chapter she asks Emma and Norman if they went to the gate. They could rearrange it, but it just seems more likely they decided to leave it out for whatever reason.
