Chapter 27: Backstory on U-1146 and the Eosinophil. Turns out Basophil is older than those two.

Okay uh question: is episode 6 (7?) released earlier than normal?

I'd say having a Pseudomonas aeruginosa getting into the bone marrow is pretty dangerous.

This show's really good-I like that it's clearly well-researched. Anyone know when the next episode of the anime comes out?

Awesome. Some more complex thoughts:

It was pretty clever for them to avoid ever showing the human they inhabit. This allows the story not to get sidetracked by another one, allows the person to basically be anyone, and also prevents us from feeling too sorry for them or from asking the question of "how often does this person get sick?"

I think the dynamic between its main characters (Neutrophil and Red Blood Cell) is pretty adorable and I like them both.

If cells are people, their society is pretty rigid. I like that the show points this out (and deconstructs its premise a little) in episodes like the allergen one and the Cancer episode. The cancer cell episode is interesting because it makes Cancer sympathetic, which is really impressive.

Mother's Basement has a pretty good analysis video on the anime.

When I'm anxious or scared my sweat glands go into overdrive, so I'm curious as to what emotional and mental stimuli would be portrayed as.

Funny, I was just thinking of how they'd portray mental illnesses like depression and what have you.

It'd be pretty hard to do without showing the person they live inside.

Well, it's pretty agreed among fans that the Cells at Work BLACK guy probably has depression, considering his poor hygiene, overuse of alcohol and relapsing as a smoker after having quit, overeating, and stress ulcers.

I like that it was T Cell and Macrophage doing the intro song this time.

I love this show, I want there to be a second season! Also, my favourite characters were Staph (can't spell her full name), Basophil and miss Macrophage.

Remember, though, that the immune system fights pathogens every day. Most of this is probably going on without the person even getting sick. I mean the influenza infection is obviously an illness, but cancer pops up all the time and the immune system takes care of it. If this person had actually been diagnosed with cancer, we'd see surgery or a chemotherapy drug being used.

Yeah, the actual "abnormal conditions" the body has experienced are only:

  • Caught a flu
  • Has a pollen allergy
  • Eating seafood with parasite

...which are extremely normal situations IMO.

Later the manga also has more serious conditions like the heat stress and the hypovolemic shock.

Since we were talking mental stimuli:

Personally, if I were the writers I'd probably suggest portraying the nervous system as a bunch of cells talking on telephones or telegraphs (the latter would be a pretty fitting analogy). Sensory nerves would probably be news reporters of some sort. Motor neurons I'd portray as a rather bossy manager of sorts that sits back with a megaphone barking orders at muscle cells.

With brain cells, I'd portray them as businessmen or political bureaucrats of some sort that work in a vast, incomprehensible (but structured) bureaucracy. They talk in corporatise about things like keeping Dopamine levels high in the way a CEO might talk about company stock or profitability in general. They'd be followed by Glial cells, who'd be their secretaries.

Unhealthy habits could easily be portrayed as various types of political corruption. For example, the use of drugs is basically them printing themselves money/Dopamine at the expense of everyone else.

I noticed a few people described Episode 8 as essentially condensing the first season of Naruto to one episode. I didn't watch that one, so can someone enlighten me on this?

... This new episode got the whole monocyte-macrophage relationship wrong. They don't change into one another freely; it's a one-time thing, and only from monocyte to macrophage or dendritic cell, depending on which tissue type they're in. In other words, monocytes are immature cells. More on them here. (Fun fact: Macrophages can arise immediately in the bone marrow, skipping the monocyte stage completely.)

On a different note, my headcanon regarding the human whose inner workings we're seeing in the main manga and its animated adaptation is that s/he's a journalist who covers war zones and/or goes to really far-out places in the Third World, where the risk of getting infections, parasites, and other such health abnormalities is much higher. Like, the upcoming heat stroke episode? S/he probably went into some desert area for a news story, got very lost and ended up nearly dying before someone(s) — whether local tribespeople or humanitarian relief workers — found him and saved him/her in time.

Have you noticed when this episode started, White Blood Cell and Red Blood Cell seems to be dating?
What gave you that impression?

... so not only does this ep recycle more animation that any other ep before it, the story is the least fresh out of any plot we got so far, and they introduce no new characters.... they get the FOCUS of the plot wrong?? I think I have a contender for the worst episode of the show!

@Marq FJA: It's possible and would explain a lot, indeed I actually like that theory. Two things to note, however:

-We aren't sure what the time frame is between events.

-The events of each episode/chapter are not necessarily as traumatic to the person as they appear to the cells-and the cells usually solve most problems with relative easy. A great example being the cancer cell arc: The person probably never even realized they had cancer.

This is based on a chapter that came out earlier in the manga than the order this episode came out in the anime, isn't it?

If you're referring to this episode, nope, it's chapter 15, happening after every episode before. If you're referring to the next episode, yes.
