The Village of Thamasa

"...but why cannot I go?" the girl asked.

"Because its too dangerous!" the old man insisted.

"Oh poof!" she snorted. "How dangerous can it be if you plan on going alone?"

"What! Are you sassing me!?"

(she sticks out her tongue)

"Why you!! Show some respect for your elders!!"

"I respect capable elders" she insisted. "seriously, what was the last monster Spell you learned? Chocoball?"

"OK that's it!!" the old man snapped. "Back to your room or you get no dinner tonight!"

She looked really angry, but said nothing. Finally, she stomped back into the house.

The Mage sighed. He hated being mean to his granddaughter. But she was the only family he had left. He just could not risk losing her.

As he looked at the mountains he contemplated exploring, looking for new Blue Magic, he wondered, what if Relm is right? What if I'm too old for this? If something were to happen to me, who would take care of her?

Suddenly, he heard a commotion from below.

He ran down the street, to find the other citizens confronting- soldiers!?

"Citizens of Thamasa!" one of the soldiers shouts, "This town in now under the rule of the Gestahlian Empire! Surrender peacefully and no one will be hurt!"

"What madness is this!?" Magus angrily snorts, stepping forward. "You have no right to come here and demand anything!"

"Strago!" the Mayor said. "Don't interfere! You'll only get killed!!"

"Grah, the hell is this?"

Hector Lockhart just kind of walks into the situation, himself drawn. He looks a smidge irritated at all of this going on. First, this cat lady amscrays on him, leaving him with a large check at a local restaurant, then this entire place is getting taken over by these squares! He just can't seem to catch a break...

One day, Marcia Shyneet is flying without a care in the world towards the Shyneet potion shop. Marcia hopes that the customers today aren't as rowdy as yesterday's. The potion rush that day was so rough, the shop had to be closed down early to clean up the mess.

Marcia spots some goons in armor confronting Hector, Strago and Relm. It seems a fight was going to break out, and they're outnumbered! However, it looks they could handle it. On the other hand, Marcia doesn't like seeing civilians getting hurt or injured at all. She's going to help them out, after all.

She flies over to the confrontation. If she wasn't wearing a visor, the others could see that she's glaring at the soldiers. In an attempt at getting the soldiers' attention, Marcia yells, "Leave them, um, alone! W-what do you guys want with...with us, anyways?"

"Not long now, kid. Alexandria's in sight, kid. Look at the splendor of it all. And I'm sure soon enough, you'll..." The voice trailed off, yet not as if they were thinking of how to finish their sentence, but more of it sounding as if it were replaced by static.

For a moment, the majestic castle of Alexandria stood tall, almost shining in the midday sun before the light grew brighter and forcing everyone in what appeared to be a small group of merchants to shield their eyes from the blinding radiance.

"What...what's going..." A figure dressed in flowing with and red robes anxiously glanced around as the light seemed to obscure everything, forcing the mage to adjust their hood to block some of the glare and by the time it died down, it seemed things had...changed. "...on?"

Wherever this was, it wasn't near Alexandria. And looking around, the White Mage found themselves in some...village and the merchants had been replaced by soldiers that didn't exactly look friendly and probably just as confused as the mage that'd suddenly appeared out of thin air. "...Erm..."

Strago bit his lip in anger. On the one hand, everyone in Thamasa could use Magic, which was a well known fact. Were these soldiers not aware of it? (Note: on this version, this is not a secret.)

On the other hand, most of them were not very powerful casters. Could he take on all these invaders on his own?

Suddenly, several more people -outsiders obviously- began to show up as well. Whose side were they on?

It turns out it didn't matter, because their presence spooked the soldiers. "Ahh! We have encountered unexpected resistance! Send backup!!"

Suddenly-

Kashiin! Kashiin! Kashiin!

The sound of heavy metallic steps could be heard!

From behind a house, an armored, bipedal vehicle emerged! [1]

Combat Begins! [2]

Round One

Whispering a Curse, the old mage chants, Mighty Guard! and suddenly he and his erstwhile allies are surrounded by green-red auras. [[reduces both physical and magical damage]]

Round 1

Marcia gives the old man a thumbs up as she's surrounded by a green-red aura. What kind of spell was that? It seems the old man has a few more tricks than it seems. She pulls out a pineapple grenade◊ and bites off the pin.

Before throwing the grenade, Marcia yells at the people fighting the soldiers. "D-duck and cover! The, um, shrapnel might get into y-your eyes!"

She chucks the grenade at the soldiers. [[damage all enemies]]

"If you want a fight, you're gonna get it!"

Hector dashed through the crowd before jumping up and covering his fist in magical crystal.

"Take this! CRYSTEMPACTUS!"

Hector smashes the fist right into the "head" of the mech.

(Crystempactus: Deals heavy Basic and light Sharp damage to a single target. Target: Magitek Armor)

Well, that was all that was needed to convince Croire this wasn't exactly going to end well. And with that elderly mage casting some sort of spell that made them feel more resilient, along with it looking as if their staff would barely leave a dent in that...suit thing...survival and keeping others alive was the priority.

Retreating to the back row, or rather, further away from the Magitek armor and attacks from other two arrivals, Croire struck a pose, focusing on the spell for a moment before casting it, with a small chant of Blink!, temporarily creating four after-images of himself before they merged into one and matched the caster's movements. At least he'd be harder to hit.

The grenade strikes the soldiers! ''Kaboom! "AIEE!!" they scream, as they are are blasted through the air.

The unaffected ones open fire, causing all the Thamasan citizens to run away screaming! [Bratatatatat!] Fortunately, the bullets were of little effect against Strago's protective aura.

And then a young jumoped on the bipedal thank and, screaming, struck an impossible strong blow! THWONNG!!

The outer shell dented, and it wobbled, almost fall off to the side... but then it righted itself up. "take this you rebellious scum!" a soldier said from inside.

"Fwoosh Fwoosh Fwoosh!!'' it shot several missiles! Boom Boom Boom! The ground was turn asunder, knocking the heroes around! However, there were no direct hits and the damage was minimal.

ROUND ONE OVER

ROUND TWO BEGINS

"Grr" Strago gritted his teeth. This was REALLY serious! He had to do something before someone got killed!

He had no choice he, had to use his second least favorite Blue Magic spell.

Taking in a deep breath, he exhaled a could of stinking green gas while gasping, Bad Breath!

The cloud spread over the soldiers including the Magitek Armor. Instantly, they became sickened and afflicted with all manner of bad effects.

"arrgh! I cannot see!"

"You idiot! You are attacking me!"

"I-I think I've been poisoned!!"

The soldiers began to run away, but the Magitek Armor remained.

Round 2

Marcia smiled as the soldiers fled from the old man's garlic breath. However, the Magitek armor launched a salvo of missiles at the group. Luckily, the old man's barrier protected the group from most of the damage. Sadly, Marcia threw her only grenade at the group of soldiers and the rapier surely won't pierce the metallic armor.

For now, the best course of action was healing up from the salvo. As a result, Marcia quickly drank the potion on impulse. The others may notice the potion was more effective than usual.

Round 2.

Well, that solved some of their problems. Or at least the squishy human ones. That giant machine was still a threat and closing on in on that thing...probably wasn't the best of ideas. Although considering there wasn't much else he could do aside from watching the girl's wounds heal and with Blink still in effect...

Well, Croire quickly swung their Power Staff and hopefully hit the Magi-Tek walker.

"Let's see if we can't keep you from coming any closer."

Hector shot out two balls of electricity before they seemed to stop, and a steady stream of electricity was formed between the two. It was relatively high up so hopefully, the mech couldn't just walk over it.

(Shocking Link: Creates two balls of electricity on the battlefield, with each one creating a stream of electricity between the two. Can be stacked and connected. If hit, it does medium Electric damage.)

"Taste my blasters!!" the mecha pilot shouted. HRRRMMM a yellow beam projected from the machine, scorching the ground.

It struck Strago! "UGH!!"

However, the pilot failed to notice the trap set on its path. It stepped between the two balls of lighting and-

CRACKLE!!

AAAIIEE!! *znaaapp krakl popp*

The Mech short circuited!

Thoom Thoom Thoom... it took a few more steps and then THOOM fell over.

The pilot, scorched but alive, scrambled out and ran away!

COMBAT OVER [1]

Strago sighed. He was hurt, but he could be healed. He was still worried, tho.

Those soldiers would likely come back. And why had they come in the first place? He had to find out.

But he knew he could not do it alone...

He turned around. "Thank you strangers. You saved me and my town" he said with a rare smile. "I'm Strago Magus, Blue Mage by profession. I hate to ask after your generous help, but could I ask you to accompany me to investigate this situation? I know it will be risky, but my people probably are not safe yet."

[[You may introduce yourselves to each other now.]]

[[Also the Magitek Suit can be repaired and used. But you will need to find an Engineer first.]]

To Strago, Marcia replies, "Of course, Mr. Magus. If this leads to the culprits, I'm...I'm all for it."

Marcia blushes and covers her face. She nearly forgot the most important thing when meeting strangers! How embarrassing!

"I, uh, almost forgot... I'm Marcia Shyneet. I was just h-heading to the Shyneet potion shop. Do you all need supplies?"

"Well, I'm Hector Lockhart, no relation to any other Lockhart, And I needed something to do today. Plus, those guys seemed like acceptable targets for my fist."

Hector was simple-minded in his wants. Punch these guys as hard as he can. It hadn't failed him before, and it wouldn't now, right?

Introductions.

"...Honestly, I didn't exactly...do much, sir. Combat isn't particularly my expertise...but you're welcome...?" Croire politely replied to the elderly Blue Mage and taking a glance at the other two 'defenders'. ...None of them looked familiar.

"Er, to be honest, I don't know any other Lockharts, so it's good to meet you, Hector. And I...don't exactly need any supplies at the moment..."

This wasn't exactly what Croire had expected and getting back to where they were before was more of a priority, but with little idea on how to do that...

"I suppose I can...assist with finding out what's going on. I don't have anything else I could really do at the moment."

"Thank you" Strago said to Marcia. "I will buy a potion right now. And several Ethers". He produced a handful of gil.

"I would recommend you all to equip yourselves as well. I'm going to rent some chocobos so we can follow the soldiers."

[[Ethers are potions that restore Mana (magic energy). Gil is the currency used in all FF games. Chocobos are Ostrich-like creatures used as mounts.]]

[[Players: you may have your characters buy equipment if you wish, or interact with each other. When ready, assume the scene below happens: ]]

Soon, Strago returns with several yellow chocobos, one for every party member. He waits for them to mount, then says, "Let's go!"

. * * * * * * *

A few hours later, after tracking the soldiers across miles, the party comes upon sight of a complex that looks like a cross between a factory and a military base.

Strago's brow furrowed. What terrible secrets lay inside?

"We must be careful... obviously we cannot just approach and ask questions. Any suggestions?"

The Shyneet Potion Shop

Marcia enters the potion shop with the gil and picks up Strago's order. Just before leaving with the goods, a regular-sized fairy◊ simply glares at her. She flies over to a rack and picks up a towel. Somehow, she's able to wipe off the dirt and debris.

"What happened to you, Marcia," asks the tiny fairy. "Did you get into a fight or something?"

"Yes... Some, um, thugs e-entered town and caused some...some havoc w-with their machines and swords. And my friends need some help. Sorry for, um, the short e-explanation, mom."

The fairy lady peeks through the door and spots Hector, Strago and Croire. "Oh, my. Come on in! Any friend of my daughter is a friend of mine!"

Considering the White Mage had very little Gil on hand, even from the hand out...purchasing equipment or supplies was a bit of a idle fantasy for the time being. It didn't exactly stop the spellcaster from getting dragged along to a potion shop and having to insist they were there to browse.

Of course, once they'd arrived at their destination, Croire sighed.

"...I don't think we have many options...if one of those...people...from earlier had left their armor? Uniform? Whatever it was, if we had one of those...well, maybe there's some other way to sneak in...?"

"Hmm... that's not such a bad idea" Strago agreed. "We could capture one of the guards who are patrolling the area and take his armor. Problem is who would wear it? None of us looks like a soldier..."

"...except you" he points at Hector. "It would be risky, but you could probably sneak in far enough to at least overhear what is going on inside."

[[Def Revenge, this is your call]]

"Eh, I don't see why not. I'm sure I could hide in plain sight with those guys."

Hector shrugged, entering the factory and looking around.

Marcia follows Hector inside the factory and asks, "How do you plan on luring a soldier away from his friends? A trap, perhaps?"

"Oh I'm sure we can find somebody..." Strago said

a short while later

"Man, Biggs, patroling is boring" said a soldier patrolling on foot to another one. [1]

"Shut up, Wedge! At least we are getting paid! And I'd rather be bored than have to fight monsters or rebels!"

Suddenly, they saw an odd-looking old man come out from behind some rocks.

"Gesthalians suck!!" he shouted, then ran back behind cover.

"Hey you! Halt!" Biggs shouted and ran after him.

'Biggs wait! Oh crud" Wedge said, and ran after him.

They turned around the corner-

-and ran straight into Strago's party.

"...Uh oh. These guys look tough."

"We are" Strago said smiling. "We can do this the easy way or-"

(both of them drop their weapons)

"...Huh. That was easy."

"They don't pay us enough for this!" Biggs says.

"OK, then" Strago continued. "One of you take off your armor-"

"WAIT WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO WITH US!?"

"Huh? We only want your armor! Get your minds out of the gutter!!"

"Oh... OK" Wedge said, though still wary.

A few moments later, a half-naked Biggs gave up his armor.

"OK now, Hector, put this on, then go inside. Oh wait, does he need any passwords?"

"Um, well"

Strago points one of the guns at them.

'The password is Hail Gestahl!" both men said at once.

"...Seriously?"

"This better not be a trick, because you two will be our hostages for the duration. If our friend does not come back-"

"Its the truth!! We swear!!"

They don't make soldiers like they used to Strago thinks.

[[OK, Hector can put the armor on and use the password to get inside the factory. I'll tell you what happens then.]]

Hector took the uniform and moved around the corner, and then walked back out wearing the uniform in seemingly no time. He clasped his fist in his hand.

"Let's begin!"

Hector approached the door and said the password as given.

"Hail Gestahl!"

"...I guess that's...one way to do it, yes." Croire idly remarked, adjusting their hood at...well, it had at least gotten results. Not exactly what they'd expected, but if they were pushovers and bought Hector's sudden change of outfit...

"Maybe if they ask...I can just...use an excuse it's my first day of being...uh, recruited..."

Either way, the mage kept their distance and waited, still a little intimidated by the factory...something like this was something they'd never seen before.
