Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

Finally, Volume 1 arrived in the mail today.

I read the first 60~ pages on the bus this morning.

A few things.

Yep, the prologue doesn't skip ahead quite so far. Only to the conversation between Pito and LLENN about joining the Squad Jam. Also man does Pito flirt with LLENN way more in the LN so far. Stuff like asking her if she wants to get better at flirting to get a girlfriend, and straight telling her she's Bi which I'm fairly sure the anime left out.

There's also a bunch of incidental stuff I already saw people post in this thread. Like Karen's family situation, and the fact the author puts in lots and lots of gun facts. Also the thing about how her outfit is more of a brown-pink in the LN and she changes outfits in town, not just wearing a hood.

Also Pito stops her in town and doesn't meet her first in the desert. But she does realize LLENN is the Pink Devil while talking to her. Unless the meeting was setup on purpose.

Having just finished reading the first novel myself, I'd like to add some comments to yours.

One, while Pito does imply she's bisexual pretty strongly, I wouldn't say that she outright admits it.

Second, LLEN's family situation deserves some explication for those who can't read the novel for whatever reason. It's not really that spoilery, though given Japan's demographics it was surprising. Karen is the youngest child in her family, but she's the youngest of five (and yes, the pothole is appropriate given the average Japanese family size). Two elder brothers and two elder sisters. One of her sisters is married with a child of her own and Karen lives in the same building as them.

It also clarifies that the high school that Team SHINC attends is attached to Karen's university. It's actual an elevator school.

Pito mentions that Llenn should dye her new gun pink, so I assume she knows that Llenn is the Pink Devil.

That bit was my spelling mistake. I went back and fixed it just then.

Yep, you were right about the Pito saying she's Bi thing. What actually happens is Pito asks if LLENN has a girlfriend while talking about flirting techniques, and when she gets flustered tells her she shouldn't get hung up on something small like gender.

The novel IIRC, also clearly stated that Karen's parents own a successful business and their family are quite well-off. Which probably explained why Karen is able to live in a large apartment in Tokyo and fly first-class. Also, the plot of the 4th Squad Jam involved one of her father's business acquaintances which she met when her father asked her to accompany him to a party.

I thought that was generally taken as a given, even from the anime.

It took me way longer than I expected to read the novel. I kept putting it off until I ended up reading pretty much the entire thing tonight. It's mainly because I lacked the drive to consume it due to already having seen the anime and knowing the plot. I think.

A few more things I noticed that differed from the anime. Or just bits I liked.

All the more bloodthirsty internal dialogue is great. And when she laments not getting to kill some players who forfeited.

"Ugh, if you're going to come, then do it already! I'll gladly feed your blood to P-chan even if I go down in the attempt!"

""Let's kill 'em, M!" she suggested with a bloodthirsty smile."

Pito's story about finding a wedding dress and tuxedo in a destroyed church was also hilarious. I wish the anime had left that in there.

"That's a nice story," Llenn agreed." "So I blasted both those outfits with my shotgun." "No longer a nice story!"

We also find out Llenn is not claustrophobic with a really great line "Llenn was glad she was the type of person who enjoyed taking naps in the closet."

A lot of others have already talked about the fact SHINC uses Russian guns because they have a good cost to effectiveness ratio.

I find it really interesting when they talk about how there are a lot rumors about what the root cause is. If its a case of companies selling the licensing cheaply or a joke about Russian quality. It really mirrors stuff I've seen on these forums. Especially for fandom like Fate.

I need to watch the scene again to check, but Llenn deciding she didn't just hear P-chan talk was hilarious, and something I don't think the anime had.

I also get why they adapted them out, but the two Elsa and M scenes in real life were nice. So we got the strong implication it was Pito, without spoiling the twist. It also is nice to show M was actually serious. Because Llenn still doesn't really belive him at this point.

I can't seem to find the date for the Third Squad Jam. I mean, sure, the next novel will come out in the Spring, but I was just curious if it overlaps Alicization.

Aniplex announced that the show will see a release in Netflix/Hulu and the English version being worked on.

Really hoping this doesn't impede its chances of a Toonami airing. I'd of liked them to air the good SAO show for once.

Book 4 and 5 are out, which cover Squad Jam 3. Good read, actually. Llenn agrees to join in because she promised Boss a fight, and didn't do it in SJ 2.

Also Pito is Pito, team Zenmal manage to actually luck into a competent strategy, Team T-S is treated with all the dignity those kill stealing, campers deserve and someone gets a bright idea to try and open the field by getting everyone to gang-up on SHINC, LMPF and Memento Mori... and everyone who went along with that learn exactly why that is a bad idea.

And CLARENCE of all people, the lady Llenn basically robbed of ammo in SJ 2, got to be badass. Was very cool.

Though it appears that thankfully Shirley doesn't hold a grudge over that going by the mention of them having a private conversation in the bar when the event ends. That's or Llenn is now caught in a bizarre love/hate quadrangle with Clarence, Shirley and Pito.

And just in case anyone was wondering, no, Kirito and friends do not appear in the Third Squad Jam, as it occurs during the Alicization Arc. That said, I do expect Pitohui to appear in the War for the Underworld anime when they recruit Japanese VRMMO players to fight the Americans that Subtilizer's crew brought in, just because "fight in a VR war where you can actually feel pain" is just the sort of thing Pito would love to do, and since she's big into pay-to-win, she has no qualms about losing her character; if anything, it would only add to the thrill.

Not mentioned specifically in the SAO book.

I could see animators chucking her into crowd scenes tho.

Are there any details yet on Unital Ring, the final big X-Over for the SEED games & how it will hit Gun Gale Online?

No. There is one more Squad Jam in Japanese, but what happens after the Unital Ring arc starts in late September 2026 has not been announced. Also, this AI test invitational sounds like something Rath thought of.

Gun Gale 6 has been gotten! Pretty good read. A group of Squad Jam players are invited to play in a special GGO event, against new, elite NP Cs. Llenn sees this as a chance to finally fight it out with BOSS and SHINC. Of course, it doesn't play out that way...
