So I've been thinking about the Don't You Dare Pity Me! trope, where one character tries to show some sympathy or empathy for another, and the receiver is flat out offended by the pity (whether it is pity or not), and rejects it in various ways.

So I got to thinking about how this could actually backfire: maybe the person showing said pity has a difficult time forgiving people, and the rejection just further convinces them to be a hard ass with even less empathy than before.

Maybe the rejector mistakenly hits a Berserk Button of the pitier, and makes the latter actually attack them.

Or maybe the one trying to show empathy just washes their hands of the other person out of frustration for one reason or another, and it's only after that the one who rejected them realizes what a mistake they made, and that the other person was only trying to help them (and that they truly needed it).

I've also considered a scenario where the person does show pity, but out of pure spite. They know the other dude doesn't want it, so they give it to them to make them feel worse for some reason or another.

I'm a weird guy, and this is a weird idea, but the idea just popped in my head so I decided to put it out there. Does anyone got any ideas of their own on this one?
