Original Take on Deadly Games

So I was thinking of having a sequence in my story where my protagonist gets stuck in a Deadly Game and has to kill his competitors in order to escape. The thing is, I feel like this trope has been played out a bit, especially after the Hunger Games franchise. I'm wondering if there's a way I can make this come off as original?

You could make it original by what the lesson is that the character learns or needs to learn. That would require a different structure, a different theme, a different organizing principle, different characters, etc. ... assuming everything in the story surrounds the main character in some way.
