I mean, I know that it' necessary for the plot to advance and I want to see the Abyss, but the whole venture is just utter madness.

It is madness, indeed. Riko is definitely an outlier.

Here's the full map by the way. The numbers are in meters.

BTW when are we going to get a Nightmare Fuel page? This is a horror anime/manga that gets very grim and gory at times so I would expect it to get one soon.

When the anime gets to it seems like the best option.

I was hoping to leave Bondrewd's folder alone until we get to that part, but somebody's gone and started on it. Ah well.

You can argue that there's already enough nightmare fuel for the first couple of episodes alone though. If not in presentation, then at least premise.

Ah, they're headed on a near pointless suicide mission. How... admirable? Brave? Or stupid. Mostly stupid. Things actually happen next time.

Every time Reg retracts his arm, it ends with a huge CLONK. I'm surprised that "Leader" didn't hear that and come investigate. >.>

[up][up] Compared to her other life prospects, I'd say it's pretty worthwhile. Still reckless, but another reason and opportunity this good likely won't come again. Not doing this would be out of character for her at any rate.

[up] They could be dismissing it as just noises his arms make at times. Makes them being prosthetics more believable.

Also, hi. I saw the untranslated chapters on the comic's site before translations began. Then I read all of the translated chapters of the manga before the anime was coming. Knowing spoilers and reading people's WRONG assumptions and speculations is bringing out the internally giggling maniac in me.

Ok so the YMMV page for the show states that Bondrewd's experimentation was for his own goals and not for anyone else's sake but the Characters page claims it was to allow more cave riders to bypass it. That's sort of contradictory isn't it? That's Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist vs Well-Intentioned Extremist. Which one is it?

I probably would not of get any attention in the discussion tab tbh.

I was the one who put it in the Characters page, but that's... actually a really good question. I might have to read a little more into it.

EDIT: I broke my heart all over again, but it's not for the sake of others. I changed it to another trope that should fit better.

So gonna overlisten to the OST when it comes out in September. Crowning Music of Awesome just in the first episode!

Man, this thread is littered with manga spoilers. Maybe say "Manga & Anime Discussion" in the header?

Episode 3: Was half-expecting Nat to join Riko and Reg, which made their parting a bit sadder for me. And now it's time to plunge into the Abyss; itching to know just how much of a crapsack the place is.

Well, my intention was that it was just for anime discussion... thus the title. But that appears to be a lost cause.

It's been fun.

Yeah, sorry about that.

Nat's actually a really good character right? His interactions with Riko and Reg really made Episode 3.

Yeah, I really like Nat. That was some pretty great character animation, too - his feelings are made crystal clear without a word.

It's been fun.

Since there isn't a manga discussion thread, I doubted this was going stay purely focused on the anime from the beginning.

I suppose so.

The fourth episode couldn't come fast enough. I know it's obvious, given that it will be our first look at the Abyss, but that will be the point where the story really gets started. Which is a bit of a shame too, since Orth was so well-developed.

That's part of the tragedy of the whole thing. These kids have a long life ahead of them with friends and surrogate family, but because of unprecedented occurrences, muddy circumstances, and limited opportunities, two of them have to leave it behind. Well, that "long life" thing may be in question in Riko's case. But whether they leave or not, the Abyss rules all of their lives.

P.s. I really hope none of you have your spoiler settings set to show them all the time.

Which means mid-Friday for a lot of US watchers.

Episode 4 out. "What was taken from the Abyss will return to the Abyss", eh… For two beings born in the Abyss, that's not reassuring in the least. But I'm pretty sure it's not the last time we see that weird compass.

But anyway, what's with everyone's obsession with Reg's… nether region?

Reg's probably good in bed because he never has to worry about STD's, and thats why they are so interested.

It's a Running Gag, believe it or not.

Some manga-readers are being upset that this episode didn't go through 3 chapters as predicted, but I think it can still work.

[up]What it did adapt was done so faithfully though. There really wasn't much they could cut, and from what I heard about this director, there won't be much cut. And I will not tolerate cutting out the food scenes. :V

This episode definitely did feel slower, but it still felt like it went by so fast.

What we do get was one last goodbye for giant-fantasy-dwarf uncle. I.E. The last personal connection she has to Orth. Geez, keep up last week's feels, why don't youuuu. :'|

Also, more bonding between Reg and Riko. Their relationship, friendship, crush, etc. all of it is beautiful and I'm glad it's making it in completely intact. It's actually one of the biggest reasons I'm so into this. The scary and sad things that happen to them only strengthen my adoration and support for them. Because I want things to end up okay for them in the end, even though the future is so unclear.
