The top-left and bottom screenshots look like red dust. The top-right screenshot works, but I still personally think the one from The Prince Of Egypt works a little better.
Anyone else want to weigh in? Or present other options?

OP is the best suggestion so far, with 2.2 the next best imo. 2.1 looks like red gas. And the background in 4 makes the "river of blood" look like stylized water.

Agreed on 4, that doesn't look like blood so much as a red light on the scene.

This one never got bumped, so I'll give it a few more days. Currently two in the green.
6 days later, 2.3 is now 6 points in the green, and 4 points ahead of the 2nd place option. I suppose we may as well call this.
