It's not even just that, though. Their normals look similar, their ki attacks look similar, hell, the only really distinct animation I saw of Gohan's was that look of his before his diagonal Kamehameha.

Freeza uses his tail and has completely distinct normals otherwise, and Buu is appropriately weird and over the top, but Cell also mostly has a bunch of generic moves to his name.

Those six were also chosen for the demo because they're the most simple to play. I'm sure some of the more outlandish picks will be more interesting playstyle wise. Like Piccolo being the Dhalsim of the cast and things like that.

Kind of a necessary evil when most of the cast has a similar power set mechanics wise in the source material.

The general gameplay mechanics are likely going to make many of the characters feel that way. The stuff that feels samey likely feels that way because it is the same between everyone - the targeted and offensive way dash attacks and subsequent combos work, the afterimages, combos in general really. A lot of Marvel-style games are like this: if you want, you can play Marvel Vs Capcom the same way with basically every character and not do terribly unless the character has a very unique way of operating (and many characters that are lower tier are so because they can't play the "standard" way and don't have anything adequate to make up for it), and that game doesn't even have the targeted and offensive abilities shared between everyone that form the basic sequence of this game's action.

We'll probably get characters that break out and be highly unique later: a zoning heavy character, and/or a projectile heavy character, a predominantly physical character, characters with unique hitboxes and move patterns, etc. But that sameyness is unlikely to go away completely. We'll probably end up depending on it.

Well here's the special moves so you can compare. Missing some Gohan stuff though.

I like that they chose to have him demonstrate his Heat Dome attack super on Cell.

[up]The trailer does feel like a Smash 4 trailer with the "Trunks joins the fight" tagline and those callbacks.

Can't say people didn't see this coming: Piccolo and Krillin confirmed. There's our nine playable characters for the beta.

So it looks like Krillin is a zoner with Confusion Fu, and Piccolo is a combo heavy character who can attack from further distance and relies on charges to either extend combos or mix-up opponents.

I wonder if we'll see the other kind of charge character in this game as well (that is, based around "hold one direction, then press opposite and input" rather than "hold down button for X period"). Seems likely, but it's a toss up as to who it could be.

Make it Ginyu. For bonus points, the the charge motion itself triggers a pose that boosts some stat if you hold it long enough.

There's that character variety I wanted. Still want to see them in action but it looks like they're bringing what I feel the game lacks right now, and everybody else is gonna follow suit.

EDIT: Original post is below this line. Now that the game and DLC is out, my wishlist is much shorter.

  1. Dr. Gero
  2. Towa
  3. Dabura
  4. Syn/Omega Shenron
  5. Android 18 (solo)
  6. Pikkon
  7. Nova Shenron
  8. Eis Shenron

Shouldn't this thread's name be Dragon Ball Fighter Z? This is my first post in this thread, so I dunno if it's been discussed.

Anywho, considering the roster's supposed to be kept tight, here's 25 characters I'd like to see in this type of game, in alphabetical order:

  • 18
  • Bardock
  • Beerus
  • Broly
  • Captain Ginyu
  • Cell
  • Dabura
  • Dr. Gero
  • Frieza
  • Gohan (Teen)
  • Goku (SS 3)
  • Goku (SS Blue)
  • Great Saiyaman
  • Hercule (Mr. Satan)
  • Hit
  • Kid Goku (DB)
  • Krillin
  • Majin Buu
  • Piccolo
  • Tien
  • Towa
  • Trunks (Future)
  • Vegeta (SS 2)
  • Vegeta (SS Blue)
  • Zarbon

Other characters I'd briefly consider:

  • Cooler (with Armored Squadron)
  • Goku Black Rosé
  • Nappa (with Saibamen)
  • Omega/Syn Shenron
  • Pikkon
  • Super Janemba
  • Vegito
  • Yamcha

Trunks visual references:

...when did Trunks fight Dabura? Was that from GT or Fusion Reborn or something?

That was from Dragon Ball Super as part of an explanation for what happened when Babidi showed up in the future.

Ahhhh. I haven't watched Super that far, so I didn't know.

...wait, why was he delayed in that timeline? I'm guessing he didn't consider Earth to have enough energy while it was under the cyborgs' thumb?

And just for the record, he actually flat out prevented Buu from coming out, because unlike Goku and Vegeta, he didn't fuck around.

Well, he didn't have anything to distract him from getting the job done, and Trunks has always been extremely pragmatic.

I've been watching the rest of those reference videos, and I'm seriously loving the level of detail and reference with these characters, not just with the big stuff you expect detail with, but the little things like rush animations, idle poses, even jabs and pokes and regular normals.

Also, I was mistaken about us not getting anything from the Universal Tournament. Buu's victory animation, as pointed out in the Buu video there, is from his fight with Basil at the beginning of the arc.

Whether the amount of stuff they could've made on the fly goes even bigger than just the animated clips and onto character designs and movelists might be another kettle of fish almost entirely, though (Buu's movelist doesn't have anything from that fight, for example, even little animations) - especially for stuff even more recent than that.

To those waiting for the beta sign-ups to drop today, rest easy: the signups have been pushed back to late August, apparently so they can accomodate more people given the enthusiastic response.
