They're meta tropes, in that they're tropes about tropes, or specifically how tropes relate to each other on a scale.
They're also the kind of tropes that in theory have their place, but they're mishandled so much they're often more trouble than they're worth.

Not all sliding scales are lists of tropes though. See: Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism or Sliding Scale Of Unavoidable Vs Unforgivable.

Talking about sliding scales and sorting algorithm tropes.
As discussed many times in ATT and TLP, many people (and mods) say that it causes problems when they're put in work pages. I personally don't see how those scales are played as "tropes", either. BUT, I think it would be good if, like Useful Notes, examples should be just confined to those pages, and shouldn't be linked to any work page as examples.
