Hello everyone, first time posting.

First and foremost, I'm Brazilian, and I don't have much training in Grammar (even tough I'm used to reading a lot), so forgive me for any mistakes, and if anything I say it's confusing, please ask me so I can try and explain better.

So, I'm making a lot of short stories based on my world, "Mundo Plano", or, in english "Flat World".

The Flat World is a world that was created after our Earth (but in the not-so-distant future) exploded itself with a super bomb. Like, really big ass bomb. The explosion was so strong, that it rippled on the multiverse, so a really powerful entity called "Kronos" decided to intervene on the planet, destroying itself in the process.

Thing is, Kronos was the core of a planet. A magical utopia, where fantasy races lived in peace and harmony. When Kronos stopped the destruction of earth, his actions compressed the multiverse for a second, and the Flat World was born. It was a mix of this Fantasy Utopia, and the ruins of Future-Earth.

Ok, so with that being said, here goes my question. It's actually a pretty fun and light setting, where The Rule of Funny, The Rule of Cool, It Runs on Nonsensoleum and these kinds of tropes reign.

I wanted to make a really cool world, where because of the mix, the fantasy beings were actually influenced by our culture in some weird way, and it's like holding a mirror to our world. Also, magic exists. Technology also exists, but in the ruins of the old world, in a pretty advanced form (Wich means we can have robots, laser guns and everything), but it's pretty rare (because of "a curse" that usually kill people that go to the ruins.. also known as radiation).

Anyway, It's basically a Parody, but I want to make cool fantasy stories with it. My biggest influences are Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchet, so you get where I am going.

The point of this post is to discuss some of the implications of having this medieval world in the middle of futuristic stuff, even if it's rare. (Like a guy that says he's a mage, but his staff it's actually a laser rifle).

Any questions about how the world works would greatly help me elaborate more on it, and that is excellent for making more fun stuff and having ideas. So, give me your impression and discuss this rather absurd idea.

Thanks for any and all help (even if is non-existant).

I think you need to ask us a question. You're more likely to start a conversation that way.

If you've never seen Adventure Time, you should give it a shot. What you described sounds a lot like it. It might give you an idea of how to make your world work.

I really like it!

The thing is the Adventure Time setting is very specific on the world, with that whole candy theme. And it's a vein of non-sense that i really like, but i think i want the world per se to be a bit more grounded.

What I discovered is that after reading more Terry Pratchet, he really nails in the head what I am trying to achieve in my writing. That feeling of "medieval fantasy" with some really cool "real life" comparisons. He does it without even needing technology or the post-apocalyptic background, and i find that really awesome.

Anyway, I didn't answer in this post anymore because the first poster was right. I really need to ask some questions, and I really don't have that many.

But, to try and start some discussion around here, let me talk about my general idea and ask you guys for some inspiration and opinions:

Because the world was created from a form of mix between two worlds (with the "fantasy world" 'winning'), the fantasy races and magic get to explore the world and colonize it.

A big part of the world is perfect. Imagine something like our world, where the Brazil and Africa part of the continents are fine, and the rest of Americas and Asia are like radioactive deserts. People think that is a cursed land, because people that go there die. (Radiation). In those wastelands you can find remnants of the old civilization (our civ on the future), but people rarely go there. So technology exists, but it's rare. You can find some people with ipods or guns ("mages" that don't know how to use magic, but have a Plasma Rifle or something as their "staff"), specialized stores that sells and buys those "artifacts" and that have "magic generators" (they don't know it's electricity) to recharge these old stuff.

The "Brazil" part is a standard fantasy land. Races like Orcs, Halflings, Humans, Dwarfs and etc. have their own cultures, based on some "legacy" of real world ones (because of the mix).

The world is structured like this:

1 big empire, that's not racial specific. It's an indirect democratic monarchy, where people vote for a council that then elect an emperor that will reign until he forfeit (pretty common) or die (also pretty common). The candidates are people of notice, heroes and stuff like that.

A lot of smaller kingdoms (but some are not actually kingdoms). We have democratic republics, we have dictatorships, communism... Basically a lot of political systems based on real life, but mostly monarchies in one form or another.

Those are the "big ones". They all form a council that is like ONU: everyone goes there once every year, discuss some unimportant matters and then pretend it doesn't exist. For the most part. Only when something really big threatens the countries something useful come out of it. Like a big ass monster or villain trying to destroy the realm.

The world also have a couple of cities, villages and tribes that are "independent", or not officially inside a kingdom.

It would be really cool to have some ideas and discussions about how our world would reflect in a fantasy one.

Something like:

The Dwarfs, being a "underground" and "mining" group, would probably be very conservative and have a really big sense of community on them. Probably a bit racist, have some big engineering knowledge and know a stuff or two about technology.

Elfs live for a really long time. So they would be really cool and liberal, as things change a LOT during their life times, so changes are common. I think about elves being like the stoners on a college. Really laid out people, enjoying their time that like to discuss and think about the world. Probably Scholars of some kind.

Orcs are meritocratic. You win by force. The strong protect the weak, and the weak serve the strong. Probably have slavery, but don't treat them bad. Because of slavery, probably paranoid about wars, conflicts and their way of life, since people don't really like slavery.

Minotaurs are disciplined. So i see them as Spartan. Really strong military, very rigid people.

Goblins are creative and weak. I see them on the Ocidental part of the world (the "Brazil" part) being the underdog. Living on slums, probably controlling the organized crime. Like brazilians, really. Maybe some revolutionaries.

Anyway, something like that. I'm on the job, so I can't keep going. But i'd like to discuss what the races would be like in parallels with our world. That would really help me set the mood.
