You are safely in the clear, so go ahead and see it. Pinkie makes a brief reference to her sister Maud Pie, Starlight is seen in a crowd shot for a brief moment but she may as well be anypony in that shot, and Cadance is one of the speaking roles, but otherwise there is absolutely nothing in the movie that hasn't been seen past Season 5.

It's pretty standalone , yes. You'll see maybe a few characters that were in 6 and 7, but not many, and those are all background roles anyway.

I finally saw the movie and found it just be okay. I admit to being annoyed at how the other characters besides the Mane 6 were barely there at all. Still, the animation was top notch and the guest characters were fine. It tried.

Maybe I'm shallow, but I was pretty jazzed to hear a reasonable 80s pop cover in the opening of the movie. That- or something from that era- is the sort of thing I would have liked to put in if I had had input. Maybe if there's a sequel after all, continue the trend of Belinda Carlisle?

Plus, it dawns on me it was also an Epic Tracking Shot/Oner! If war877 is still around, you called it.

Am I the only one who never listened to "Rainbow" before seeing the movie?

I feel like it had more of an impact that way. A lot of great film-ending music has that feeling or theme of catharsis, that you've been through a lot but have overcome, or are at least looking to the future- like "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from The Breakfast Club, or "A Real Hero" from Drive- and this was much the same.

I didn't hear it before the movie, either. The lyrics are a bit hard to make out, though, so I ended up kinda tuning them out the first time. After I listened to the soundtrack and worked out the lyrics, I warmed up to it a bit more. Still not too big on the song, though.

At which point Viking and I were like, "Wow, this took a sharp left turn into shippy real quick." But then, after "One Small Thing", that's hardly a surprise.

To be fair, I didn't pick up on a lot of the lyrics the first time either- it may just have been the music for me, coupled with the high of big-screen pony movie credits. It definitely took another watch before I realized that it's basically Twilight addressing Tempest. You know, while the two of them are already talking. So yeah, kinda shippy.

To be honest I kinda saw the start of it with some of the moments in 'Open Up Your Eyes', so I wasn't too surprised.

I mean I figure it probably wasn't intentional, but even if not then really, this series has an unusual penchant for Les Yay.

Huh. I just saw the Futurama episode "Spanish Fry", in which fish people kidnap humans and steal their noses, to sell them on the black market as "human horn". Sound familiar?

My money is on the Griffons. Sure, they may have outlawed pony hunting long ago as the ancient barbarism it is, but the decadent wealthy and powerful still desire the forbidden and exotic fruits of ponykind.

Based on what we know of the griffons, there are no decadent wealthy and powerful griffons. They're too busy scamming each other and/or scheming to scam each other to accumulate any kind of wealth or prestige.

Griffon society is a clusterf*ck of selfishness where everyone screws everyone and then the library never gets rebuilt which makes the Baby Twilight cry.^{Dont Explain The Joke} For clarification, this is not meant to indicate that Twilight is babylike, but a play on the phrase "make the Baby Jesus cry".

Yeah, its a shame they made their kingdom some run down third world country. It really only lends itself to the drama of poverty and decay. No court intrigues in THIS kingdom.

Are we sure that's the entire society, though? I mean, sure, that one city we saw was pretty jacked up, but I can't imagine they'd continue to exist as a nation if their entire country was like that. If it didn't collapse from unsustainability, someone else would surely invade (or maybe not... Headcanon: Storm King didn't bother with the Griffons because he took one look and noped right out ).

It's not really clear whether Griffonstone represents the entirety of the griffon nation or if it's just the capitol thereof. Neither really bodes well for griffon society.

Yeah, it's possible that there are griffons elsewhere who might be doing pretty well. Possibly even very well if their culture leans them towards accumulating and hoarding wealth.

They seem too short-sighted for that. Griffons like two things: making money and being gigantic, obvious shit-heels to other people. If you want to accumulate wealth while being a shit-heel, you have to be subtle about it. You can have shit-heel policies but you can't, like, tell people to their face to go choke on a brick until you're already wealthy.

People generally don't like giving money to shit-heels.

How does a society of shitheads even work? How do you keep society together when everyone is perpetually hostile to each other? If this were humanity, civilization would soon collapse in on itself, devolving into anarchy and isolated hunter gatherers, unable to stand each other long enough to build any kind of social structure.

These Griffins need social skills and teamwork more than they need friendship.
