I am not well versed in comics and my internet searches provided nothing, so I turn to your wisdom:

I am looking for a title of a comic I saw in a doctors waiting room in germany around 2000 or so. I think it was a french or belgian comic and I only remember one issue/story, in which the protagonist was in a desert with a shapeshifting, possibly flying sidekick or mascot. There were some ruins or a labyrinth in the desert and huge blue beetles on which nomads rode. I believe the issue ended with the protagonists standing in a cave with a river at the edge of the desert. The sidekick thingy might have tranformed into a tool, there might have been some sort of big snail-house in the desert and the ruins might had something to do with glyphs. The beetle-riding nomads wore long robes. I also remember that the sidekick flew excited spirals around the protagonist when it became clear that it could stay with him or something. Maybe the french-belgium is misleading and it originated in a different country. but I have the impression of a french name.

I know it's a far shot and a disappointingly vague description but I keep thinking and thinking about it and I can't remember the title. I hope you know more, thanks!
