Making a thread for this old game because the HD release will be out in a matter of days and includes a lot of very useful things which previously had to be modded in,things like quick loot and hugely improved interface, and most importantly the removal of load times

Since this means a new playthrough I'm interested in hearing how everyone else plays this game,I've always struggled to be evil in this game so maybe I'll try being an evil Nameless One,plus we can endlessly argue over the Nameless One's true identity!

So I just bought the game. What's the best build to access the most content and not get killed? I know that Fallout privileges Intelligence, Charisma, Luck, and Speech and Small Arms. What is the case here? How do the mechanics work? How much combat should I expect?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Don't worry about dying too much in this game, unlike Fallout you don't lose your progress, but to minimise death I'd stay as a warrior

I recommend putting points into endurance, wisdom. intelligence and charisma.

There is a fair amount of combat,a few bossess here and there, most mostly you'll be talking to a lot of people,

[up] Agreed. This game REALLY gives back for Wisdom mage builds. Mage is, basically, the go to class for the game.

I wouldn't bother taking many skills relating to "swords" - there's only I think two actual swords in the game - knives and axes and clubs are the go to.

I;d recommend a first run through blind, then a second one where you KNOW the best options. That said, a first run through will show you a lot. There's some great stories hidden about the place.

I've been trying to crack the game, but the Steam download isn't letting me access the files. To be honest, I consider the dungeon crawling sections an absolute waste of my time, barely tolerate the Adventure bits, and want to skip forward to the ROLEPLAYING, which is AMAZING. Like, those dialogue trees are the best thing I've seen in a long time. They're so rich, and so real.

And they just keep going. And yes, the side areas (like the sewers with those BLOODY MAGGOTS) are a pain.

It is possible to get through most of the game without fighting, except the compulsory gang fights I think. You can legit solve almost anything via dialogue - there are also actual companion consequences (You CANNOT make everyone happy)

There's only two binary pairs, and you can absolutely make out okay with one of those pairs.

Now in the early plans for the game one of your companions was selling you out and actively betrayed the party, but that version also included a liberal dose of The Dog Was the Mastermind so I think it can safely be ignored.

Regarding stats, I'm inclined to suggest putting Wisdom first: if I recall correctly, it's the stat that's checked for recovery of memories, which reveal new secrets, open up new options (I think), and award additional XP. That last in particular allows the player to level their character that little bit more.

IIRC in terms of dialogue, the most important stats tend to be Wisdom > Intelligence > Charisma, in that order. Other stats do get brought up — having some (I think 13) Dexterity lets you immediately reach out and snap a few people's necks early on, for instance — but those are the key ones for unlocking dialogue options. Torment is a bit odd compared to other RPGs in that Charisma takes a backseat compared to other talk-y games; it's still important, but it comes into use more when you're outright telling lies.

With that and the XP bonus, you'll probably want to focus on Wisdom for any character, though don't completely neglect the other stats mentioned. You'll always start out as a Fighter, but you get on the path to become a mage by talking to someone in Ragpicker's Squre (over to the north-west). You can also become a thief there too.

Bumping because I'm doing another playthrough and somehow I discovered you can get anti negative token in the smouldering corpse bar to protect you from shadows

Also trying really hard to avoid dying.

Bumping this because I'm doing another playthrough!

Baulders gate 3 is really making me wish for another RPG set in Sigil.
