Deep in the jungle

Dawn. A tall shape moved through the dense undergrowth, followed by two other sleeker, lower shapes. The sound of hurried, scared breathing was being pursued by the sounds of high-pitched screeching. The taller shape clambered up a tree, revealing its nature. It was a young man, with deeply tanned skin and dark, unkempt hair down to his upper shoulders. He had piercing green eyes, and wore little to hide his toned, muscular figure except a loose one-piece garment comprised of the leather of some unknown creature. His feet were bare and covered in dirt, cuts, and healed scars. The young man held a flint-tipped wooded spear in one hand as he climbed up, just as the two other shapes began to catch up to him.

The shapes were sleek reptilian beings the size of large wolves with red and black feathers adorning their bodies, an S-curved neck going into a long and slender body with a lightly fanned tail. On the creature's arms were long feathers that looked like, if flapped, they could potentially lift the creatures into the air. On each leg was, in addition to the deadly claws, one large sickle claw each that was about a foot long. The animals' eyes were wide and amber with circular pupils like that of a hawk's, and the snouts were long and slender with needle like teeth adorning the creature's mouth. The two animals began to screech loudly and try and claw at the tree, trying and failing to follow the young man. However, a disturbance arose from a nearby clearing. There was a loud whoosh and the forest in that area lit up suddenly. A couple of small black-feathered creatures resembling miniature dragons with bat-like wings flew away from the sudden disturbance, and the aggressive carnivores backed off as well, cowed and frightened by the sudden noise and light.

The young man kept in the trees, trying to remain hidden, though he also looked through the canopy to determine what it was exactly that made the strange noises...

Canada, Yellow Mountain Granite Mine

Maike stretched in the driver's cab of her haul truck, finally her shift was over. At the moment she was around 5 meters above the ground and mostly trying to relax as the roar of the giant engine slowly faded away. After a while she opened the door to get some fresh air and got on the platform besides the cabin and from the on the ladder to the ground, as she was climbing down Maike suddenly noticed a bright red light coming from the front wheel at around eye level. Her interested sparked by this she went to the tire, in the profile was a bright red stone, certainly not what normaly was mined here. Maike shrugged, trying to dislodge the strange rock bu-

???

Just as she touched the rock to retrieve it the world collapsed around her and she felt as if being eaten whole and then being spit out again. As Maike opened her eyes again (after the haul truck had stopped driving on her head) she saw... something, trees... certainly more trees than should be standing in a mine, a whole lot more trees than should be there in fact. And also strange noises, very much not the noises you'd expect in a mine. Maike looked around again "Ugh, what happened?"

Josephine "Jo" Bukinkito | Unknown Forest |New Game Selected

Nobody really expected much to happen when they pick up something that looked weird. After all, it just looked different, that was all there was to it, right? And apparently I was in that category because as soon as I had the little blood red object in my hand, everything changed, and I don't mean that only in the metaphorical sense. I got a bit dizzy for a moment and my vision blurred, but it wasn't long and when it faded, there was only one thought that first came to my head:

Why hadn't I seen that coming?

But, of course, that wasn't important. Not really anyway. I was somewhere completely different and I knew it. It might have looked like your average forest but I've lived near one for as long as I can remember. At the very least, this wasn't my home. The trees were all wrong. I didn't recognize any of them. Or the other plants. And the beach wasn't anywhere in sight, or smell. It just smelled like a forest, no salt in the air as far as I could tell.

And there was another detail that made me not freak out completely, other than my confusion, I wasn't alone.

"Well, for one, assuming you also picked up something red, we got teleported here," I said to the woman's question. Then I glanced at my surroundings again. "Though I have no idea where 'here' is or why we're here."

North Africa

Dr .Jonah Langwood crested another bluff and stared down at the broken, scrubby landscape around him. It was hard to believe that anything could have survived here; the trees had shed their leaves as the dry season inched ever onward, the ground racking under the twin pressures of heat and dehydration. Off towards the side of the great sloping canyon that made up this part of the deposits, Langwood could just about see the riotously coloured array of patchwork tents that ha been set up; a tiny reminder of civilization in an empty land.

Because it was empty. Most things that had once lived here had long since packed up and moved to more equitable climbs; scorpions and insects prowled underneath rocks, and he'd chased off a few snakes prowling around the camp more times than he cared to think about. But it hadn't always been this way. He turned his attention back to the dig site - just visible in the evening twilight - for a moment, the jumbled bones casting strange shadows in the orange equatorial light.

Something glimmered in the light. "Hm." Langwood knelt and picked up the artifact, a bright red stone of some kind - some kind of amber, maybe? Unusual for it to be so close to the topsoil without somebody-

Green. Green all around, a solid verdant wall of trees, plants, vines, creepers, every tropical plant that Langwood could think of - and the temperature; the dry arid air of the desert suddenly and unpleasantly exchanged for the equally sweltering and damp atmosphere.

"... the hell?" murmured Langwood as soon as he had gotten to his feet and ascertained that all of his body parts were still in one place... and that there were others, right next to him, looking as equally bewildered and bedraggled. "... And none of us know what's going on here, do we?"

The clearing

As soon as he saw there were people in the clearing, people that he didn't recognize and didn't look like they were from the area, the young man tried to stay completely still, hiding in the foliage and hoping that no one would notice him. The bushes began to rustle in the clearing around them, with a trilling chirp echoing out from where the foliage was moving around. The young man glared over at the bushes, readying his spear to throw it in case it was something dangerous.

Instead, out stepped out a rather small creature that looked like a bipedal lizard, roughly five feet long with a long outstretched tail, a parrot-like beak on its face, wide eyes and a thin layer of brown down covering its body. When it looked up, it froze, staring at the humans that were standing dazed in the clearing. The young man relaxed a little, though remained on his guard in case the predators came back to prey on the little creature.

Mark was walking along the empty road to the location of a boxing meet. The place was some miles out of the city and he perfered to walk there. Get some walking in. The road was one of those old country roads. Paved but with cracks and bumbs on it and the yellow was fading. This was basically a unused road now a days because of that fact.

Then something was glaring in the day light. A glare too bright for just some common trash. He picked up the red claw looking trinket and then he stared to fell from dizziness, blacking out before he hit the ground.

The clearing
Mark came to and there was some people already up and talking. He got up and looked at the three individuals. A young girl, a older women, and a old explorer from his attire. He answered the explorer guys question with, "Fuck if I know what the hell is going here." and then he looked around. He saw it. Marks eyes aimed staight at it and he told the group, "And I have no idea what that thing is suppose to be but I hope that they don't get bigger!"

Berkshire Hills, Massachusetts

"Why am I here again?" Abraham muttered to himself as he lay, alone and awake in his tent? The answer he knew was that he had no real friends so when members of his theater group invited him for a week camping he had said yes. Certainly it hadn't hurt that the others, three guys and two women, were all pretty good looking because he was still, at twenty-three, technically a virgin.

Still, the great outdoors, even a spot as relatively tame as the Berkshires, was no place for a good Jewish boy. Or so his parents would tell him. Which was another reason he was here.

Through the canvas of his tent he saw the sky beginning to lighten. he decided to go explore. Maybe walking around would tire him out enough to get some sleep. When he opened his tent flap he saw it was still pretty dark so he brought his keychain flashlight.

After a few minutes he felt lost, even though the camp site was still vaguely in view. Then off the trail he saw a faint reddish glow. It was an odd stone. He picked it up.

And suddenly he was in a clearing in the middle of a wilderness that was nothing like the Berkshires. With four people he'd never met and a lizardy...thing.

"Okaaay then. Where am I and who are you guys? And what's...that?" he said pointing at the lizard creature. "I've studied a lot of biology and that doesn't resemble anything I've ever seen or heard of." He paused. "At least nothing that's been alive in millions of years."

"So wait." Jonah massaged his temples and tried to get to grips with what was going on around him, and trying to shut out a sudden but burning craving for coffee. Hell, anything hot with plant matter in it. Tea, even. "We're all in the same boat here?" he asked. "We all just... woke up here after finding a red rock or some... thing..."

Langwood trailed off as a high, trilling animal cry - something that he might have written off as a bird call, or a weird monkey in other circumstances - cut him off. There, standing no more than four feet away from him was... well, it certainly looked a bit like a bird, a squat flightless thing covered in feathers, but then there were the lanky arms dangling from the creature's fore, and the tail... no bird had a tail like that for millions of years.

Millions of years.

No.

It was too stupid, even for him. Impossible. But there it was, staring up at him with the kind of untamed gormlessness that the dodos of Mauritius must have once greeted sailors with. It was absurd, impossible, the kind of thing you see in bad science fiction movies.

But there it was.

Jonah sat down very hard on a nearby stump and stared at the... the... the dinosaur for a few more seconds. He became aware of the fact that he was breathing very hard.

"Holy shit." he breathed. "Holy shit."

The clearing

As the people in the clearing stared at the little fluffy dinosaur that stood in front of them, gazing in fear at the group, they didn't realize that something else was stalking silently in the bushes in the other direction, approaching without a sound. Then there was a whoosh without warning from the bushes as something began to try and leap out, before it was suddenly impaled on a sharp object that was thrown from the treetops. The small furry dinosaur darted back into the bushes quickly.

The young man, who threw the spear that impaled the predator sneaking up on the group, jumped down to examine the dead dinosaur, looking at the newcomers warily. "You are safe now," the young man told them, haltingly. The animal that lay dead behind them was a somewhat large (around 6 meters in length) with prominent crests a couple inches tall over each eye, nestled on top of its slender, long, toothy snout. Overall it looked like a larger version of the predators that had been attacking the young man earlier, except it did not have feathers and it was overall sleeker and more slender.

Abraham blinked, then blinked again, his head moving between the young man to what he thought was a raptor of some kind.

"You wouldn't be named Tarzan would you?" He wasn't even going to ask how he spoke English. Meanwhile he went into a defensive crouch, in case something else came out of the jungle or the man turned hostile. Yes, he'd killed that thing but you never knew.

Josephine "Jo" Bukinkito | Unknown Primeval Forest | Stage 1: Setting Priorities

Well, that settled it. We were all in the same situation: we found a very red and small object on the ground, we picked it up and now we ended up here, in a place with dinosaurs. I wasn't sure whether to stare in surprise or shout from it. In hindsight, I was thankful I went with the first otherwise as it would've attracted the bigger ones here. But it didn't matter either way as it seemed there was a predatory dinosaur in the bushes...

...and it got killed by a person wearing nothing more than a loincloth.

Of course one of the others beat to the Tarzan joke but that was okay, especially considering the fact that "Tarzan" was speaking perfect 21st century English. Or modern English. Whichever one was more appropriate.

"Thanks for that," I said to the...man? Boy? Young man? Let's go with young man. "In all seriousness, what's your name?" I glanced around the place, a lot more wary now. "And this place wouldn't happen to have one too, would it?"

It didn't matter much, but it did to me, it was a good distraction from the fact that we were basically lost and likely trapped, for now for the more hopeful, which was me.

Forest Clearing

Maike took a step back as what looked like a small dinosaur stepped to them... and then a much larger dinorsaur that got killed via spear to the neck. She looked around in the group, not really sure what to say here, and can one really blame her? You don't get transported into a forest with dinosaurs and Tarzan-esque humans often. Since Maike didn't really have anything (useful) to say she decided to instead just listen to the others (particulary "Tarzan") and try to piece together what the hell just happened beyond 'somehow some people were put in a forest with dinosaurs via magic stones'

The clearing

The young man, noticing the coast seemed to be clear, stood up fully, looking at the others, still with some unease. When Abraham asked if his name was Tarzan, he blinked and tilted his head. slightly. "Tarzan? I do not understand. I am called Goka. You are new here. This land is old and there are many things here that will attack you. It is not safe in these woods. I can lead you back to my village. I will keep you safe until we reach it. The tribe is not far." He bent down and pulled a tooth from the mouth of the dead dinosaur, then tied it to his spear. "You can save your questions for when we arrive."

Woah, this Goka guy just killed this dinosaur like it was nothing! Mark crosses his arms and tells the group, "Yeah, I picked up a red tooth thing as well. Names Mark."

Then he walked up to Goka and said to him, "Nice job on taking it down!" Mark kicks the dead dinos head with his foot to highlight his point. "Sure, I guess I can follow you back to your village. Probably better then staying out here to get eaten.....not that I couldn't handle this bastard!"

Maike tilted her head at that but for now stayed quiet. After the others made their introductions she nodded "I'm Maike, und ja, going to the village would probably be the best idea." She looked around again, trying to affirm that they for now at least weren't watched by any other dinosaurs.

Goka raised his eyebrow at Abraham's explanation. He began gesturing for the others to follow. "Stay close," he told them, pulling a knife from his side and cutting through the dense foliage.

"So this Tarzan, he is a legendary figure from your land?" he asked, starting to walk. "I am no hero. I am just a man who aims to survive in a world that hates us," he explained solemnly. "Beasts like the one I killed just now are plentiful in these forests, and bigger beasts thrive elsewhere. Do not let down your guard."

And then, as though the last five minutes hadn't been senses-shattering enough, there was a human approaching them - savage, unkempt, straight out of some kind of Rudyard Kipling novel. And, of course, there was a tribe nearby, a tribe of dinosaur-worshipping people..

Suddenly, it all became very clear to him. Abundantly, wonderfully, crystal-clear.

"Oh, I get it," he announced suddenly. "This is a dream. I hit my head on a rock and this is all a nightmare, right?"

"...right?"

The forest

Goka glanced back at the others. "If this is a dream, then I would hope we wake up," Goka simply replied. "This place is something out of a nightmare. And as for your language, I am surprised that you speak my language. You speak very fluent Ito for being newcomers to this realm. Look, the village draws near," he told them, pointing to another opening in the trees.

There sat another clearing, logs piled along the edges of the village pointed out with spikes, presumably to keep the predators out. Throughout the village in some kind of pattern sat huts that seemed to be made of chopped wood and scavenged metal, with various other people similar to Goka going about their daily business. One young woman was leading a horse-sized dinosaur with spikes on its front feet and a beaked mouth down a street, carrying behind it a small cart full of crops. A couple of the villagers looked over at Goka, then at the newcomers and raised their spears. Goka raised his arms up.

"Lower your weapons. These newcomers are friendly. They were lost, I rescued them," he explained. The soldiers lowered their spears and approached warily. Goka turned to the others. "This is Ito Village," he introduced. "The people of Ito are friends. Now, you may ask questions."

Maike looked quite baffled at all this, it felt all so surreal and would she not have seen the dinosaur with her own eyes she would maybe even have believed this all to be an elaborate prank from someone, but obviously enough this was no such thing. Maike looked at the warriors in front of her, although for now she didn't speak.

Goka thought for a moment at Abraham's question. "Hm. I would have to say the person to ask would be... either the tribal shaman, or this other newcomer we found, speaking similarly as you and dressed in a similar manner.
