Love me some Bleach S Abridged. One of my favorite Abridged series.
Though I do find it... odd... when they lapse into musicals. Like it happens so often (with one episode basically being a Musical Episode) that I feel like they desperately want to do more music but... I tend just not to care for them. It's alright, it's competent enough, but it doesn't really engage.
Except for Kenpachi singing "LET'S MURDER CHRISTMAS." That brought me joy.

Do you need to be familiar with Bleach to enjoy this?
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?
Hard question for me to answer, because I don't watch Abridged Series without knowing the source first, but you won't get lost or anything. The things you need to know are explained in this when they need to be.

Have to be? Probably not. But it helps. I'm not... super into Bleach (I kind of only follow it academically, really. I don't watch it, yet I like reading about it) so I got most of the references but many were still lost on me. It will definitely hamper your enjoyment. That said, as long as you've got a pretty decent grasp of the genre, it'll still resonate enough that I think you'd have a good time. Pretty much everything Hollow Ichigo says or does is only relevant if you know the series, though.
T Hat's kind of it, they're pretty much a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment for me and then they just move on. They're... odd.

If that was "Abridged" how long was this filler/padding between a nameless grunt and a side character's fight in the original?!? Was this a multi-episode fight?

At this point in the series the main characters are all engaged in their own Arrancar fight, and yes they're spread across multiple episodes/chapters since we jump back and forth between them.

Bleach (S) Abridged is a creation of the Blazing Azure Crow team, and technically reboot of their old Bleach Abridged series. There are 23 episodes out as of this post, with the newest episode being posted today.
They've also abridged the Sealed Sword Frenzy OVA, and the Memories of Nobody and The Diamond Dust Rebellion films.
