This topic will list tech fixes, feature additions, and other updates to the site, for reference and informational purposes. Please note the following:

  • Not all changes will be listed. Purely internal changes or changes related to security may not be disclosed. The devs don't always tell us everything they're doing, either.
  • This topic will remain locked. Please use Query Bugs and Query Wishlist to report problems or request features.
  • If a post appears to be incorrect, please hit the yellow holler button (https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/smiles/error.png) over this post and put the explanation about why it is wrong in it.

January 20, 2017

  • On the Home Page, a link to Trope Depiction Guidelines has been added.
  • TV Tropes branding around the site has been updated for trademark purposes.
  • Moderators may add new topics in the Content Violations forum. (Rather than the old workaround of creating a topic in a different forum, then moving it.)
  • Forum-banned users may now read forum topics even if they cannot post in them.

Work In Progress — Version 1.8

This is a collection of changes that are in development or confirmed for the next major update to the TV Tropes code base, known informally as "TV Tropes 1.8". Please note that this information is not final and is subject to change prior to release. Not all changes will be listed; some are purely internal and some are related to security and will not be made public. We will announce when the preview version is ready for beta testing and create feedback topic(s) as needed to discuss it.

Because the list of changes is so large, it will be broken down into sections, each in a folder. A summary of major features will come first.

Update 2017-07-27: The moderation team has been given access to the development version of the updated site and is providing feedback.

Major Features

  • New site design — not a massive change like the 1.3 release, but with improved aesthetics and functionality. See the "Style and Interface Changes" folder.
  • We are moving to HTTPS/TLS to improve the security of user logins.
  • New namespace configuration system will prevent the creation of articles in unapproved namespaces and provide more flexibility in setting default page types and styles. See this topic for more information.
  • We are launching a new internal search interface that doesn't depend on Google.
  • New WYSIWYG wiki editing interface! (see below)

    Style and Interface Changes
  • There is a brand new, cleaner home page design. Check it out!
  • We are presenting a revised layout for the main wiki. Once the preview version goes up for everyone to look at, we'll start collecting user feedback.
  • There are updated styles for sub-wiki areas such as Darth Wiki, Sugar Wiki, etc.
  • There is an updated design for action bars on mobile.
  • There is an updated forum design.
  • The "browse" page has been redesigned.
  • Fixed an issue where an undesired or irrelevant image could appear when sharing articles or posts to social media.
  • The Watch header button will no longer appear in parts of the wiki where it's nonsensical.
  • The site detects AdBlock usage and will beg users to whitelist us.

    Wiki Editing
  • The flags for improperly placed YMMV, Trivia, and Flame Bait links will now work as expected in articles typed as 'creator' and 'subpage' and will appear for secondary links as well as for the primary link on any bulleted line.
    • YMMV links should be flagged on 'work', 'creator', and 'examples' articles.
    • Trivia links should be flagged on 'work' and 'examples' articles.
    • Flame Bait links should be flagged on 'work', 'creator', 'examples', and 'subpage' articles.
  • The Related view for articles will show works and tropes in distinct sections to improve readability.
  • [note], [labelnote], and [folder] markup will now always open the correct instance when clicked. Previously, two notes with the same text would cause a target collision and only the first would be toggled. Similar behavior with folder markup can be observed in pinned forum posts.
  • Fixed an issue where bogus namespaces containing periods could appear in the namespace header bar.
  • Editor: We've long been working on a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) version of the wiki editor, so that users don't need to know markup to write articles. Don't worry; you'll still have the option of editing like you're used to.
    • Note: This feature will not launch with the 1.8 update for the general troper body. It will be restricted to moderators while the design is finalized.
  • Editor: Custom messages for [noreallife] and similar tags will appear again, as they got lost in the new design.
  • Editor: Markup help went missing as well. It's back now.
  • Editor: It is no longer possible to mess with the wiki editor by adding bogus parameters or crafting a URL that contains '&' or '?' characters. note
  • Cutlist: When a cut request is challenged, it will now have a pale yellow header as a visual indicator.
  • Redirects: Fixed an issue where redirects to articles in the Main namespace would not show up correctly in the target article's Related view. note
    • Note: Existing redirects will not be updated retroactively. To fix them, edit and save the redirecting article.
  • Indexing: Redirects will no longer appear in the index navigation bar, even in auto-indexed namespaces.

    Forums
  • The format of links to individual posts in a topic has changed. (Old-style links being broken is an issue that's being fixed.)
  • Additional measures have been taken to prevent post collisions (two posters simultaneously posting in a topic could generate a duplicate post ID, causing undesired behavior).
  • The moderator "add crowner" tool will once again display a list of all active crowners for a particular type.
  • The "gingerbread toggle" is returning, letting users choose a stripped-down view of the forums. It is called "Condensed Forum Posts" on the profile page.

    Private Messaging
  • Double-quotes and everything after them will no longer be stripped from the title when replying to a private message.

    Profiles and User Security
  • We are moving to HTTPS/TLS to improve the security of user logins.
  • The user profile page has been redesigned.
  • The avatar gallery should now function in the same way on profile pages and forum post headers.
  • Timestamps across the wiki will now respect the user's timezone profile setting.
  • Fixed an issue with certain wiki settings being lost when saving the user's profile, such as Wide Load.
  • Fixed an issue in which updating the user's email address or password would reset all profile options.
  • Password confirmation is now required to change a user's email address.

    Moderation/Administrative Controls
  • Moderator reversion tool will properly update Related links in affected articles, so that null-editing will no longer be required afterward.
  • IP detection should work more reliably.

Version 1.8 Update

We're pleased to announce that the beta version of the version 1.8 update to TV Tropes, mentioned in the previous post, is now live. Patch notes are listed above.

This beta test is limited and closed. We are recruiting a small number of testers from among the most active wiki users, who will be receiving invitations at their registered email accounts. The purpose of the beta test is to find bugs and gather feedback about the update. If we determine that additional testing is needed, we may invite additional tropers.

I have one change to announce to the patch notes: The WYSIWYG editor is not quite ready for prime time and is currently restricted to moderators only. We'll iterate on it after the rest of the update goes live.
