I went in expecting a dumb action anime with a high concept and I got a dumb action anime with a high concept.

[up] Pretty much, plus the writing didn't completely suck.

Chivalry of a Failed Knight is kind of a different beast than your usual bog standard LN adaptation fair.

It indulges in a lot of the cliches that plagues the genre, but the writer is self-aware enough not to go into full pander-mode. So the MC actually gets a girlfriend early into the story and unlike most leads, they actually have an honest to God talk about sex rather than dancing around it. You still get the little sister who's in love with here onii-sama, but it gets replayed realistically with her getting shot down.

[up]Yeah, It's not much better in terms on quality, but those types of decisions made it an interesting watch alongside its contemporary.

I have a 1000 word breakdown of how Berserk has failed to improve at all since last season. Does anyone want to read my filibuster or should I keep it to myself? I wouldn't blame people for not giving a rat's ass about the show in the first place.

So watched that Zero anime. Thought it would be generic, but the worldbuilding of the first episode really drew me in. Definitely something to watch.

You could post it in the Berserk thread. I'm not really watching the show at all, but I'd be interested in hearing how it's botching other things now.

Tsugumomo is as good adaptation as I could've have hoped for. Great production values, good pacing, loyal to the source material. I'm very pleased with it.

More first episode impressions:

  • Uchouten Kazoku: Still has that rich whimsy that made the first season so enjoyable. There's tsuchinoko hunts, furniture falling from the sky, and that random old lady randomly joining the idiot twins in their routine and gasping for breath afterwards... Can't help but grin. It is unfortunate that Benten will apparently be relegated to the ED for the time being, but the dapper newcomer is more than enough recompense.
  • Tsugumomo: It's like something out of the 90s. For better or worse. The MC looks like the typical bland lead but is actually sorta a fun guy. Freud would probably have a field day with him too. The cloth manipulation magic thing looks cool. Not sure how I feel about the family jewel abuse...
  • Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho: It's refreshing to have a white tiger beastman merc for a protagonist, and his witch co-star isn't too shabby either. They have a peppy sort of dynamic going. Otherwise, seems like a neat fantasy story (thankfully not the RPG kind. I may have read a few too many of those isekai manga), hewing closer to Scrapped Princess or Hitsugi no Chaika rather than those save-the-world epics. I like it, but it's also the kind of show for which I have a list of tweaks that I think could propel it into "actually good" territory. Pretty good job on stuff like the blood contract being torn apart though. And the magic system has some meat to it.

One thing I liked about Zero(Is there an actual abbreviation of the title? Just saying Zero could get confusing) is that with the mention of somebody being named Thirteen, it implied some sort of naming scheme, which made me glad that the name Zero wasn't just for Rule of Cool.

[up]I believe the official English title is Grimoire of Zero, which is much easier. I did like the first episode, a non-human protagonist is always cool and I am getting Chaika vibes from Zero herself (although that could just be the hair). The pacing seemed a little slow but I like shows that take their time.

The Eccentric Family/Uchouten Kazoku remains fun but it didn't seem to be quite as entertaining as the first season, possibly due to the lack of Benten.

Anyone know what is happening with ID-0? The raw has been out for a couple of days but I cannot find any subs in the places I usually watch anime.

Yeah, I'm really loving Grimoire of Zero so far. The ED and lyrics are suggesting that it may eventually lead into a romance between Yohei and Zero, which may bring up comparisons to Katanagatari, a show I quite like.

It's been fun.

Suka Suka (or whatever you call that one with the superbly long title) has an excellent pilot as well. I'm instantly in love when the Scarborough Fair cover came up; the atmosphere the anime set is somber, as it should remembering the source material's true nature.

So many great fantasy anime this season, I'm in heaven.

Definitely has potential, and its obvious unlike in Black Bullet that Willem sees the lolis as children and not love interests, thankfully.

  • Ninja Girl & Samurai Master: Hell yes, second season already. This is just adorable and hilarious. And definitely canon to history Probably. Maybe not quite. It's still the best,
  • Re:Creators: It's certainly interesting. Great premise, too. I feel like you don;t get many shows where it's the anime characters getting pulled into the real world, though maybe I'm just missing them all.
  • Eromanga-sensei: I guess it's a good thing I didn't hear this was made by the Oreimo guy until after I watched this. Didn't get a whole lot of incest vibes that everyone else was apparently getting from their interactions. And it better stay that way.
  • Grimoiire of Zero: Also looking pretty good. I like Zero a lot.Only twelve episodes, though? Blah.

Also dropping Frame Arms Girl, because jesus christ those panty shots just do not stop. Actual fanservice shlock is more conservative.

Suka Suka had great first episode. Really build up the world without revealing too much. This could go into a number of directions and I'm excited to see which one.

As predicted second episode of Rokudenashi was much better than first. With more serious parts played well even humor hit the right spots.

Uchouten Kazoku is still pretty great, though the lack of Benten isn't helping

Zero has entertaining character interactions and clunky exposition. Note that when I say "clunky" I don't mean that it's awkwardly forced in, but that the dialogue used to explain things tends to be confusing and strangely phrased. Not a whole lot happened so far. Will give another episode, but with some of the other fantasy shows this season I'm not sure this one stands out enough to be worth watching

Suka Suka is an odd mix of melancholy tone and silly character interactions. Good job of making the world feel lived in. High production values and good directing. And for some reason like half the characters have names that sound like they belong to elder gods?

Anyone know what is happening with ID-0? The raw has been out for a couple of days but I cannot find any subs in the places I usually watch anime.

Netflix

Show itself seems okay, but the first episode is pretty clearly moving quickly to get the set-up out of the way. Need another episode to see what it's really going to be like

Suka Suka is basically I Am Legend in a fantasy anime setting, from what I see.

So second ep of Akashic Records: We start off with Glenn nailing a textbook to a board like the lovable bastard he is, and then brings up a point not often made in fiction. Magic is basically just used for murder. I mean, when was the last series you saw were magic was used for something other than combat? (I mean there's healing, but even that has combat applications.) I have to say, for a series with such stupid outfits(who the hell designed the girls' uniform?!), it's taking an interesting path with it's focus on magic and it's significance in the world and what it means to people.

Also, Glenn is freaking great. Best character in the show.

SukaSuka Has a nice setting and the main characters seem to be interesting but I feel that it is one of those series that would probably have been improved by a double length first episode to properly introduce the series.

Anyone know what is happening with ID-0?

Netflix

Ah right thanks. The first episode is subbed now and it is reasonably entertaining. The CGI animation works well with the mecha but, as usual, isn't too good with the humans. The tech and the setting seem interesting, just have to wait for the plot to appear.
