Since the dawn of time humanity has existed as the prey for forces beyond our control, beings that came from outside of the bonds of reality known as Zeritics, massive beings who existed to devour the souls of humans in order to evolve their beings to even greater levels of power. Without aid humanity would have fallen long ago to the Zeritics and their brood, but thankfully humanity was not without protection from the forces from beyond this realm. One day, while slaving away in service to the creatures a young woman found three tomes bound in a strange rock, and toiled days on end to break it without any known reason. Once freed the books vanished from their stone prison and found their way to three young people, revealing their secrets with voices only the chosen could hear.

With the knowledge of these books the children weaved a spell so powerful that it banished the Zeritics from our world, and freed the souls the creatures had swallowed to keep themselves content. This spells power was so great that the children who used it were killed by its casting, and the tomes ripped themselves apart in grief. The pages of these tomes flew free, but called for wholeness. Through some strange magics pages collected themselves into individual tomes, all weaker then their sires but powerful in their own way. These limited collections are known as Grimoires. To this day they are the only effective weapon in the fight against the Zeritic hordes that break through into our realm.

Grimoire's come in three designs:

Gehanna Tomes- Books of unholy and dark magic, controlling the undead, spawning horrible creatures, and of course allowing great access to hellfire these tomes burn away a casters soul until they are left an emotionless husk ruled by insinct and power. Careful use can still grant a Grimoire user a long life, and good deeds and kindness can strengthen a soul against the storm, but it is the fate of those who use the power of Gehanna to eventually lose that which makes them more then a beast.

Shining Tomes- Books of holy and light magic, summoning angels, granting others great strength, and shining the wrath of the almighty upon the wicked. This tome will burn at a casters sanity until they become a person driven by desire and a warped sense of kindness. However their justice is mixed with blatant insanity and forces them to act only within these ideals. With care they can become powerful weapons against the Zeritics and their brood, but must be kept from others to prevent harm.

Natural Tomes- Books of magic that draw power from the world around them, gaining strength from life itself. Creation and destruction in equal measure, controlling the elements or wielding the power of beasts that rival the Zeritics in power. However like a double edged blade the Grimoire will draw power from the caster, weakening its user and slowly killing their body to use its power. Without care a Natural Tome user will die from exertion or their massive powers.

For the past two hundred years humanity has lived in comfort, protected by the wielders of the Grimoire. Two great nations, Eden and Sanctum were created to house and protected, allowing advancement to a brighter future for the people. Using technology left behind by the Zeritics they create marvels, flying machines and great structures to provide food and water. However in the past ten years tensions have risen as Eden falls under the sway of a new religion, one that promises doomsday if the Grimoire's are not reunited into their perfect forms. Tension now brews between the two kingdoms, blades at each others throats. And still the same the Zeritics wait for their chance to dominate once more.

You take the role of a Sanctum Grimoire holder, freshly drafted into service to be trained to fight the Zeritics, and should the worst happen your fellow wielders and man. Do you have what it takes to hold the power of gods and demons in your hands? Or will you shutter and collapse as you are eaten away by the very magic you wield?

Interested. What should I know for making a character?

You say I am loved, when I don’t feel a thing. You say I am strong, when I think I am weak. You say I am held, when I am falling short.

A few key pieces of information before you start making your character sheet.

The technology level of the universe this game takes place in is Magicpunk Modern, or in simple terms it is at the technology level of the current day but instead of electricity and oil the world runs on energy produced by massive generators the Zeritics left behind during their occupation of the world. Satellite communication doesn't exist, but short ranged telecommunication exists. Mobile phones are a growing trend and the internet as we know it is still in its infancy. Technological innovation relies almost entirely on what researchers manage to discover from old Zeritics technology, so one day you might have a biplane, and the next you can see a fighter jet flying overhead. But at this point Grimoire users are still the only thing able to harm the invading Zeritics.

A Grimoire will natural appear to the person who it deems worthy the moment its current owner dies or becomes unable to continue fighting (i.e. they lose motor ability, go into a coma, or die). The Grimoire will never leave the person it has chosen, and will draw that person to read it and learn of its power. The writing itself seems random to anyone else, but a Grimoire user will always understand their own book regardless of literacy. Those who wield Grimoire's will always feel drawn to kill Zeritics even if they have no direct grudge against the beings.

Name:

Age: (15-21 makes up those who are new to their Grimoire)

Grimoire Name: From Necronomicon to the Dead Sea Scrolls, give your Grimoire a name you like.

Grimoire Type: Gehenna, Shining, Natural

Grimoire Primary Ability: Does your books collections of spells focus on the destructive element or lose some power in favor of weaving defenses? Does your book summon swords or armies of murderous mice? Of course your book will have some variety to it, but this is for really showing what you want your character to be specialized in.

Grand Spell: This is the ultimate ability of your Grimoire, the final trump card when everything else has failed. This can be the summoning of a massive creature, an attack of grand proportions, or a spell that empowers those around you to cast even more power spells. The cost of using this is an almost instant hit to what your Grimoire drains from your characters. Gehenna Grimoire holders might lose all ability to feel for a few days, Shining Grimoire users can become utterly obsessed with their particular set of morals, calling each person out on the tiniest detail. And for Natural users they suffer the amount of blunt force trauma that might come from being hit by a moving vehicle. This is your most powerful spell, but in exchange you will rarely have the chance to truly use it.

Personality: Describe your character in a few simple sentences. Are they someone who seeks justice for the powerless and wants to protect out of the goodness of their hearts? Or maybe they just like the benefits of the job.

Backstory: Your characters live now in Sanctum, but that may not have always been the case. Did they come from a lower class family of farmers in constant fear of the next attack? Or did they live in comfort in the large cities were the middle and upper class took root. This is the place for you to tell us what lead up to your character being drafted.

Apperance: What your character looks like.

Hopefully more will join.

Name: Najan.

Age: 17.

Grimoire Type: Shining.

Grimoire Name: Scintillation.

Primary Ability Pysical, mental, and sensory enhancement. For example: one spell lets the caster see through objects for a short time.

Grand Spell: The caster is rendered almost completely invulnerable, only a small handful of attacks are capable of breaking through this shield.

Personality: Najan is first of all a lover of knowledge, and dreams of benifiting the world by making a grand discovery. He also hates feeling helpless, because he was for so much of his life. This is why he prepares to fight the zeretics, because the grimoires are the only weapon that will work on them.

Backstory: Born to operators of the zeretics' generators, Najan had a very weak immune system and was often sick to the point of being bedridden. In these times, he would distract himself with a collection of books on a wide variety of subjects, be they historical, scientific, or philosophical.

One day a disease of his got so bad that his family called for the assistance of a shining grimoire user. During treatment, he and Najan would talk about what he's been learning about, and this often lead to debates on the nature of the grimoires and the morality of the shining type's effects. The healer praised Najan's grasp on these concepts for one so young, and it wasn't long after the treatment that Scintillation appeared to him. The first thing Najan saw when he opened it was a means from increasing his resistance to diseases.

Appearance: Najan still looks a bit sickly, having a pallid complexion to his light brown skin and a thin frame prone to shaking. Still, he has curious brown eyes that dart around taking everything in.

Hey there! I'm interested in this. Would you mind looking over my character sheet?

Name: Sebastian Wren.

Age: 16.

Grimoire Name: Wraithskin.

Grimoire Type: Gehenna.

Grimoire Primary Ability: Mainly enhancement and transformation magic, the spells contained within Wraithskin warp and change the wielder in horrifying- but useful- ways. The more common spells are ones that provide physical or magical protection to the caster, layers of scale, fur, or pure darkness covering the caster. More powerful spells can cause the caster to change into monstrous forums. While useful, such spells are harder to control, and someone casting a transformation spell from Wraithskin must focus or lose themselves in bloodlust and rage.

Grand Spell: When cast, the user transforms into a large draconic humanoid wreathed in shadow, their strength, speed, and physical resistance increased tremendously. They also gain enhanced healing and enhanced senses. The trade-off is the fact that the longer the caster stays in this form, the harder it is to keep control and not slaughter everything in sight. In addition, after someone transforms back into their normal form, their body temperature drops sharply for a length of time proportional to how long they spent in their Rampage Form.

Personality: Sebastian isn’t lazy, exactly. He works just as hard as everyone else- just on different things. When others train in martial arts, he trains his focus. When others learn about their enemies, Sebastian tests his own limits. Because he can’t afford to slip up. He can’t afford to make friends or form lasting bonds. One slip up while in a different form, and someone ends up dead- a friend, a mentor, or himself.

Backstory: The first taste of hatred that Sebastian had was by no means a pleasant experience. He’d lived in a medium-sized city as a middle-class citizen. He’d never really had to deal with anything worse than bringing up bad grades, and trying to get along with the teachers he didn’t like. That all changed shortly before he got Wraithskin.

The shatter of glass had woken him up, but the screams of his parents had been the thing that had helped him shake off the chains of sleep. He’d rushed out of his room and straight to their own- but not before grabbing a kitchen knife. He wasn’t an idiot. In hindsight, grabbing a blade was probably the only reason why he was still alive. The burglar that had broken into his house wasn’t a nice man by any means, and he had made short work of his parents when he’d woken them up by accident.

A neighbor had called the police when she had heard the yelling and screaming from the Wren house. When they arrived, they had escorted a bloody, beaten-up sixteen year old out of the house, who was clutching a black, leather bound tome in his hands.

Because he had been covered in blood, it was all-too easy to connect the dots when they found the ripped-apart body next to his dead parents.

After that, Sebastian had been pardoned and drafted into service, since Grimoire holders were a valuable commodity. Now, new to Sanctuary, he’s still training to master the spells held within Wraithskin.

Appearance: Sebastian is tall but thin, and somewhat unimposing. His head is covered by a mop of black hair, and his eyes are dark brown. His features are somewhat angular, and his teeth have been staring to become sharper and more filed as he’s been using his powers.

Both characters look utterly perfect for this world! I do hope to get one more player, but if nothing occurs I would be happy to GM the world for the two of you currently active!
