Where am I? What's going on?
#1: Nov 14th 2016 at 9:22:54 PM

Welcome! My name is... unimportant and annoyingly common. But my actions mark me as PossiblyQuiteInsane!

But enough about me, let's talk about my proposed RP.

"The year is 2020. The M-Reactor, a prototype attempt to harness arcane energies as a power source, has mysteriously malfunctioned. This resulted in an energy wave that transformed 3% of the population of North America into monsters from mythology and fiction.

There was no rhyme or reason to the transformations. No factors, biological or otherwise, that linked those affected. But the newly created monsters were soon looked upon with fear and suspicion. Rumors abounded that only the most evil people were transformed. This was not helped by the fact that a small fraction of the transformed began to use their monstrous forms to prey on the weak, becoming monsters inside as well as out.

However, most of the transformed only wished to resume their lives. But this soon became impossible as professional monster hunters from all over the world crawled out of the woodwork, drawn by the stories of those who spread terror and indiscriminate in their hunting. Newbie monster hunters started to emerge from within the civilian population for one reason or another. The world would never be the same again.

This tale is set in the coastal city of San Lorenzo, California, six months after the accident. Many monsters are still adjusting to their bodies, but some are already more than comfortable. Hunters, rookies and pros alike, roam the streets. Some.. less than moral monsters use their new forms to their advantage as criminals."

In this RP, your character will be a monster, trying to function in a world that has all too suddenly gone mad. You could also play as a monster hunter, if you so please. But no killing PCs without permission. Your character cannot be invulnerable or overpowered, and there will be no autohitting in combat. The person being attacked will decide how the attack affects them.

What are things human monster hunters do to put themselves on par with monsters? Can humans learn magic or have psychic powers?

Interested!

I want to play someone that's, well, monstrous, to a degree that they can't disguise themselves. What exactly is the level of danger that monsters face? Say a monster tries to go outside and buy some groceries at the local store- would that be considered suicidally dangerous with the hunters about?

First of all, thank you all for the overwhelmingly positive response!

Now, to answer a few of your questions:

HeroicSociopath: Professional hunters can use minor ritual magicks for tracking and enchantments, but their main strength is specialized anti-monster weaponry. Whether it's a crossbow that fires garlic-coated stakes, a handgun loaded with silver bullets, or a super soaker full of holy water, a professional monster hunter is always prepared with the right weapon to match the target. Rookie hunters, on the other hand, tend to have one or two anti-monster weapons purchased off the black market, and they use them without regard for the actual type of monster they're up against.

whizzerd: Despite rampant paranoia among monsterkind, hunters are fairly uncommon, and make up less than 1% of San Lorenzo's population. And civilians are not going to risk pissing off a monster unless they're exceptional idiots. Going to buy groceries without hiding isn't suicidal or even all that dangerous unless you're exceptionally unlucky, but it will alert hunters that you exist and probably attract them to your neighborhood.

  • Name: Roisin O'Neill
  • Species: Banshee
  • Skills:
    • As a banshee, Roisin's main power is the ability to sense imminent death. It's kind of hard to describe, but she just knows if someone is going to die soon. She might have a vague idea of how and when they're going to die, but it's not an exact science.
    • This is accompanied by a very loud, bloodcurdling scream. It doesn't have any particularly mystical properties other than being loud and scary. Also, she has enough lung capacity to scream for days without stopping.
    • Roisin is a classically trained singer and a mostly self-taught guitarist. She was going to be an opera singer at one point, but, uh, that didn't work out so well for her.
    • She's also a moderately accomplished and very pragmatic street fighter.
  • Personality: Roisin is largely amoral, but also effervescent and well-intentioned. It's not that she's actively malicious (though she certainly can be if you get on her bad side), she just tries to stay out of trouble if she thinks there's nothing in it for her. She's always up for a good time, and she quickly bounces back from anger and depression- but she's not a pushover, and if she doesn't like you, she will make it known. She's also very observant, and since she's usually outclassed in the brawn department, she relies on cunning to get out of trouble. Since becoming a banshee, she's struggled with what to do about her death sense and whether she should warn the people involved or not.
  • Appearance: A deathly pale twenty-year-old woman with dark red hair. Her body type is best described as "plank," as she doesn't have much in the way of hips or chest. Before the M-reactor malfunctioned, her aesthetic consisted of a lot of flowy white dresses, but these days she tends to favor a more butch, punk look; jeans, black leather jacket, and white shirt. She also has a guitar case slung over her back.
  • Background:
    • Roisin came from a strongly Irish-American family. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a singer, and when she was eight she began taking voice lessons. By the time she was twenty, she was going to make her debut as Cunegonde in Candide. And then the M-reactor malfunctioned, and Roisin's life changed forever.
    • It began when she suddenly just knew that her teacher was going to die. She started keening uncontrollably, driving away everyone around her. Depressed and isolated, Roisin left home and started living on the road, making ends meet as a street musician. She's successfully hitchhiked to San Lorenzo, where she plans to try and make a name for herself as a singer.

I also have a few other ideas for characters that I could donate as NP Cs if you're interested.

Let me know if the skills need toning down.

  • Name: Leith Hunter
  • Species: Arachne.
  • Appearance: "They say that spiders have no emotions."
    • Leith is about 5'10" as she stands. She'd be nearly twice that height with her legs fully stretched out.
    • She wears a top as a holdover from when she was human; usually button-downs and open vests so she doesn't have to squeeze them over her head.
    • As a human Leith was inflicted with albinism, which has carried over to her new form. Her white skin is sensitive to sunlight and risks burning easily. She's photophobic, which she mitigates by wearing sungoggles on her main eyes while out in sunlight. The goggles' dark lenses can be flipped up to reveal the regular lenses underneath, which help with her low visual acuity (as does relying on her other senses for information).
  • Skills:
    • Enhanced Physiology: Leith can jump up to 15 feet in the air, climb and cling to any surface for hours at a time, is stronger, tougher, and faster than a typical human, and has a better resistance to drugs and toxins- which is balanced out with an increased susceptibility to pesticide. Her carapace is sufficiently armoured (works against most blades, not so good against bullets) but her underbelly is soft.
    • Enhanced Senses: Chemical sensors in her setae allow Leith to pick up tastes and smells better than a human can. Her sensitivity to touch is enhanced to the point that she can even detect air currents, and she also has the ability to detect vibrations through her limbs.
    • Silk Weaving: Like any good arachnid, Leith has spinnerets that can create silk. There are three main types of silk that she can produce for various purposes:
      • Ampullate Silk: Dragline silk that's used for making webs. Also used to make a drop line in case Leith loses her purchase on a vertical surface, or to create a navigational trail back to her starting point. It's as strong as steel and twice as tough.
      • Flagelliform Silk: Used to create the parts of a web that capture "prey". Sticky, tough, and extremely elastic, enough to stretch five times its original length before breaking.
      • Aciniform Silk: Used to wrap and secure prey in swathing bands. Twice as tough as the other silks.
    • Non-Spidey Skills: Leith is organised, punctual, and can keep her calm in moments of duress. She's an avid reader, despite her vision problems. Lately she's been teaching herself how to knit and dye fabric, to make some economic use of her new talents.
  • Personality: Leith has spent most of her years in isolation, and has been content with that. She's stoic and withdrawn on the best of days, and even more so now that she's 80% spider. She took to her new form easier than most, perhaps because of her fatalistic outlook; her transformation was an inevitability, thus complaining about it would be fruitless. She dislikes small talk, and struggles to make friends, but her honesty and proclivity for generosity means that what friendships she does gain tend to be long-lasting.
  • Background: As an albino, Leith was fated to stick out from her Californian peers. It wasn't that which led to her ostracisation, however, but instead her off-putting personality. She didn't much like to chat with others, and so others didn't much like to chat with her.
This was fine for her, as she instead spent her days engrossed in literature. Much of her free time was spent battling her poor eyesight in a classroom as the other children hung out in the sunshine. She spent more time in fictional worlds than in the real one, which led to an utterly uneventful existence up until her graduation from high school.
From there she found work as a home-based administrator for a public services company, then quickly moved out of her family's home into her own loft apartment (it wasn't that she was in a hurry to leave them after all the support they'd given her, but she placed great value on her independence). For a long while that was the extent of her life- working, reading, putting her body through the required paces- until the catastrophe struck. Now she's a social recluse with six more legs and four more bad eyes.

  • Name: Patrick Murray
  • Species: Dullahan
  • Skills: Now a Dullahan, Patrick wields a whip made out of a human spine, is a master horse rider, and can survive without his head. He has inherited the Dullahan's ability to detach it, and can see in the dark, his eyes lighting up like a lantern. All doors and gates will become unlocked if he passes by them.
    • However, he is very reluctant to embrace his newfound abilities, as the Dullahan is a spirit of death. Among its many powers is that he can kill by saying someone's name, but Patrick does not wish to kill anyone. Instead, he simply wishes to be left alone.
    • As a result of not fulling embracing his Dullahan side, his ability to open locked doors only extends to those he touches, and as for killing people by speaking, it is now limited to simply wounding a person, with a black substance issuing forth from his mouth after he says the person's name, which will head straight for that person. He also now has a fear of gold, in even the smallest amount, say, a coin. Part of being a Dullahan.
    • His horse follows him everywhere, and is a vicious and ill-tempered beast, which will run down anyone in its path, while snorting sparks and flames. No normal human can outrun it. He and the horse can communicate with each other, but nobody else can understand the horse.
  • Personality: He is a rather reserved and bitter individual, but used to be quiet fun loving. He laughed all the time, and was very easy going and reckless. However, now he struggles against his Dullahan side, which manifested in the form of his horse. The horse is ill-tempered and foul, urging him to embrace his Dullahan side. Patrick wants to be left in peace, and not have to kill anyone at all. He feels depressed over his current situation as well.
  • Appearance: Has black hair and pale white skin which has small signs of decay, with little parts of his flesh starting to peel off, and he has dark green eyes. He wears a worn black jacket and has a loose hanging black shirt, as well as black riding trousers. He didn't used to wear black, but now that he's a Dullahan, he has to all the time. He has a horse which is completely black.
  • Background: Patrick came from a loving family, and was proud of his Irish-American heritage. He had a good life. He had numerous friends, from football players to goths to nerds, and his girlfriend in high school was a cheerleader. When he graduated, both went to the same university, and planned to propose to her when he was 21. He was doing well in uni, and his grades were going up steadily. He was fit, healthy.....yeah, life was good.
  • And then it happened. During class, he felt himself growing cold and faint, and his skin started to change colour. It become sickly and pale, and then he started coughing. His clothing began to turn black. He felt like he couldn't support his head on his shoulders. And then it fell off. In front of the entire class, the teacher, and his girlfriend, his head fell off his shoulders and into his lap. Someone ran over to help him, but his hand shot out, and tore out their spine, turning it into a whip. Patrick stood up, holding his head, horrified. And then the door burst open, and a black charger stormed in, sparks snorting out of its nostrils. The beast sped right for Patrick. People who were in its way were trampled to death under its hooves. Patrick could only watch as he came forward, until it collided with him, and threw him onto its back, and stormed away, again running down all in its path. He had changed into a Dullahan, the Irish spirit of death. Now, he lives in the forests, riding along the roads, trying to avoid people and not kill anyone.

You know what? Screw it, I'm joining now! tongue This sounds fun. I'll find the time.

Name: Seawell Huntly

Species: Faun

Skills: Can use his horns and hooves to fight (though they are not extraordinarily powerful.) He's also a decent computer programmer.

Note: It is possible Seawell can use magical music from instruments such as reeds. Too bad he has no musical skills yet. [lol]

Personality: A laid back individual, his whole attitude about his change is basically "meh". He's friendly enough and will offer good advice, but is not inclined to join in on violence.

Appearance: While he is actually a middle-aged man, he looks younger due to his transformation. He has black hair and brown eyes, and of course, horns, fur and goat legs. He wears T-shirts and jeans cut off to accommodate his lower anatomy.

Background: A college drop out with very few relatives and friends, Seawell made a living with his computer skills. After being transformed, he first freaked out, then after realizing the same happened to thousands of others, shrugged and went back to his daily routine. So far he hasn't encountered a hunter, but knows its only a matter of time. (He has, however, encountered a few furries. He had to explain to them that no, he wasn't interested in that.) Note that he's a Faun, not a Satyr, which are not the same thing though many people get them confused . It annoys him to be called a Satyr, though not as much as being mistaken with a Demon.

  • Name: Cornelia Steiner
  • Species: Centaur
  • Skills:
    • From LARPing she knows how to handle swords
    • Due to her horse body he's quite fast - although not unrealistically so - as one wouild expect she can run about as fast as a horse.
    • Personality: Cornelia is friendly and most of the time, but also quite lively. Due to her recent... err... changes in anatomy she tends to kick out when startled.
    • Appearance: There she is in full armor.
    • Background: Corneliea's life up until the reactor incident was nothing really breathtaking - or even exciting. Quite to the contrary indeed Cornelia always had what one would call a normal life, she is the owner of a small cornerstore in the suburbs of San Lorenzo where she sells armor and weapons for full contact LARP and re-enactment groups, admittingly her customer base is not too large but it at least was enough to halfway keep her afloat. That changed though when she was transformed - some customers stayed, she even got some new ones, others chose to buy at a human-owned shop.

I would very much love to be a part of this! Would you mind looking over my character sheet?

Name: Jack Wilson

Species: Wraith

Skills:

-Incorporeal: Less of a skill and more a factor of his new form, Jack is somewhat intangible. Although he can touch objects and wear clothing if he concentrates, most things have trouble touching him, unless they happen to be using, or happen to be, silver.

He tends to hover a few feet above the ground when not wearing human clothing, and can pass through walls and other solid objects when not in direct sunlight (although any clothes he happens to have put on will drop to the ground behind him.

Aura of Dread: Just like "natural" Wraiths, Jack exudes a minor sphere of unease around him. It doesn't really do much besides make people that don't know him well uneasy or nervous, and while it can come in handy when trying to make people dumb enough to threaten him back off, it can be really annoying. Like, really annoying.

-Shadowborn: In true horror fashion, Jack is much stronger when out of direct sunlight. When in a building, underground, or out and about at night, the Wraith is about twice as strong as a normal, average human. His other abilities as well usually only work at normal capacity when he isn't illuminated by the sun.

-Lifedrinker: Like all Wraiths, Jack feeds on human energy. He absorbs it by touching someone, but seldom uses this ability offensively. Taking a little bit of energy from someone unaware usually doesn't do much to them, and they might not notice. Taking a bit more can cause them to feel tired.

And of course, he can forcefully drain a human. Unlike taking energy from someone unaware, forceful draining is painful and terrifying. Jack almost never does this, since it is very, very easy to accidently kill someone when you happen to be sapping their life force.

Weaknesses:

-Light of Day: As mentioned above, Jack is weakened by direct sunlight. When outside uncovered in the day, in his normal form, he's actually weaker than the average human, becomes corporeal (although he doesn't stop hovering) and can't drain energy. He usually wears hats and layers of clothing when going outside to prevent this, but it is still a peril for him.

-Monstrous Appearance: Jack is a Wraith. Unlike some monsters, who are only somewhat inhuman, he is very, very noticeable. Dogs growl when he approaches, and cats hiss; and anyone, when looking at him undisguised, can generally tell that the floating thing in front of them isn't human.

And of course, he didn't have the fortune to turn into a non-threatening monster, either. If undisguised in public, bad things generally happen.

Silver and Flame: Silver hurts Jack. A lot. One of the few things that can reliably touch him, a weapon or object of silver burns him something fierce; and speaking of burning, fire is also something that hurts him. He tends to avoid both, obviously.

-Personality: Jack is naturally a kind person, but his transformation has put a bit of strain on his compassion.

Originally warm and caring, his horrifying visage has caused him to become somewhat cold and frightening, although when his outer "shell" is cracked, his original warm personality bleeds through. He loves children, and woo-behold anyone who attempts to harm a child in his presence.

-Appearance: In his undisguised, "natural" form, Jack looks humanoid-ish. His body is made up of a kind of black "smoke," and when not wearing clothing, he looks like he's wearing a black robe. His eyes are dark red orbs, and he doesn't seem to have a mouth; his hands are claws, and his lower half is pretty much non-existent, hidden by his "cloak." Which he can't seem to take off, either.

In his preferred disguise outfit, Jack looks odd, but not monstrous. Wearing a long trench-coat to hide his lack of legs, he dons a tri-corn hat that covers the top of his face, wrapping white bandages around the lower half to cover his lack of a mouth. He wears gloves to hide his claws.

-Background: Before the Reactor accident, Jack was a professional chauffer. He knew his way around cars, and he had a moderately comfortable life. But then, to put it mildly, things happened. Transformed into a smoky monster, he was really, really lucky to not be in a public place when the wave hit.

Of course, he wasn't that lucky. Suddenly morphed into a ghostly monster, he had been horrified at his appearance, at what he looked like. At the hunger that he felt in his core. And naturally, that had been the point at which two human teenagers decided that the weird humanoid in the ally would be a good mugging target.

He almost killed them. Draining them to the brink of death, Jack stopped just in time, terrified of himself and his abilities. Hunger sated for the day, he had rushed back to his apartment, avoiding crowded public spaces in what was most likely mass panic.

After having a minor panic attack in his apartment, Jack did the thing that came naturally- he tested out his new abilities. (After screaming for help on the internet, of course.)

Now, after buying some clothing to hide himself in, he has to live in this mad, mad world.

Fun Facts:

-Jack is techically undead, even though he doesn't really consider himself one.

-He once rescued a cat from a tree for a kid. No, seriously. The cat didn't appreciate it.

-He gets really annoyed when people refer to him as a ghost. That's like calling a cat a dog.

-He's terrified of spiders. Ironic, considering he's a life-sucking monster.

  • Species: Human
  • Skills:
    • Hildegard has been training as a monster hunter since she was six. She's an expert in seven different forms of armed and unarmed combat, and she also knows first aid.
    • Her arsenal consists of a crossbow with specialized bolts: some coated with garlic, some made of silver, and some that explode once they hit their target.
    • Her home is magically warded to protect against monster attacks.
  • Personality: Hildegard is serious and logical, and she doesn't have much of a life outside of her hunting. She's all business, and that means that her cool exterior can quickly get flustered when dealing with frivolity. She's not fond of monsters; while she won't go out of her way to antagonize them, she avoids allying herself with them, and she can act very harsh towards them. She has a very close relationship with her mother, despite their disagreements on monsters. She cares deeply for Sloane, her first friend ever, and she's highly devoted to her.
  • Appearance: Tall, pale, muscular woman in her late teens (she's nineteen), wearing leather body armor, combat boots, and a helmet.
  • Background:
    • Hildegard comes from a long line of German monster hunters. The Hoffmanns lost their ancestral estate when the Nazis came to power and immigrated to America, where they've lived ever since. Her father Theodore defended San Lorenzo, and her mother Myrna was a student of folklore and ritual magic. Hildegard was largely isolated from people her age to focus on her training, especially after her grandfather and father were killed and her mother was paralyzed from the waist down.
    • When the M-reactor first malfunctioned, monsters attacked and people rioted. Hildegard had her hands full trying to contain everything, and she was almost overpowered one night by a vampire. She was saved by Sloane Garcia, a teenager who had lost her family in a werewolf attack. The two struck up an unlikely friendship, and Sloane convinced Hildegard to take her on as her partner.

  • Name: Sloane Garcia
  • Species: Human
  • Skills:
    • Sloane is a skilled athlete, dancer, and hand to hand combatant. Her fighting style draws from her cheerleading and ballet, so it emphasizes speed and agility.
    • Her main weapons are a set of brass knuckles and a baseball bat. She keeps a crucifix necklace on her at all times.
  • Personality: Despite being a former cheerleader, Sloane is less peppy and more very sarcastic. She's more laid back and less constrained by rules than Hildegard, but she's just as staunch when it comes to her moral code. She may not have quite as much experience as Hildegard, but she's a quick study and very observant, not to mention genuinely interested in saving lives and more willing to work with monsters than Hildegard if it seems necessary. She's also much more socially astute than Hildegard, though she has her fair share of issues over the deaths of her family.
  • Appearance: A dark-skinned Afro-Mexican girl with short, curly hair and a wiry, athletic build. She wears jeans and a red hoodie, along with body armor.
  • Background:
    • Sloane was a cheerleader at San Lorenzo High who came from a perfectly average middle class family. Her father Ernesto was a math teacher. Her mother Debra was an architect. Her younger brother Robbie was annoying, as younger brothers usually are. Sloane never expected to come home one day to find that a football player turned into a werewolf had murdered all of them.
    • With her family dead, Sloane felt like she had no reason to live- until she met Hildegard Hoffmann, a vigilante from a family of monster hunters who was trying to restore some order to the city. Sloane encountered Hildegard fighting a vampire, and helped her defeat it. The two struck up an unlikely friendship, and Sloane convinced Hildegard to train her. Now, they're partners and unlikely best friends.

  • Name: Myrna Kaplan Hoffmann
  • Species: Human practitioner of magic
  • Skills:
    • Myrna is an expert on folklore and mythology, and she's also an accomplished practitioner of ritual magic.
    • She's a skilled fighter, though she's mostly a pacifist. However, even as a paraplegic, she could probably kick your ass.
  • Personality: Myrna is bookish and fanciful, and she prefers to act as mission control than going out in the field. She's much more open-minded about monsters than her daughter, believing that anyone who was once human can't be all bad. But she's not stupid or naive by any metric, just highly optimistic. She often clashes with Hildegard, but they love one another very deeply.
  • Appearance: A pale, heavy set, bespectacled dark-haired woman with crutches and leg braces who favors wool sweaters.
  • Background:
    • Myrna Kaplan was a college student studying folklore when she became friends with monster hunter Theodore Hoffmann. She helped him with numerous cases, and eventually they fell in love, married, and had a daughter, Hildegard. Myrna continued studying magic.
    • Myrna lost the use of her legs in a monster attack that also killed her husband and father-in-law. While she did her best to raise and train Hildegard on her own, she often wonders if she could have done a better job at helping Hildegard grow up to be well-adjusted.
    • After the M-reactor malfunctioned and the monster population skyrocketed, Hildegard gained a partner, Sloane Garcia, to help her with her vigilante activities. Myrna has been teaching Sloane ritual magic.
