The enemies seemed to be losing momentum, at least. That was a good thing; it meant they might get an opportunity to escape soon.

Kiri looked rather irate at something, though; it'd be best to stay clear, but that unwieldy weapon she was holding would probably cause her problems. If Grendan took that off her hands, she might be able to more easily vent her frustrations on the enemy.

Move to S14, trade Iron Sword for Kiri's Steel Blade, and continue to S12.

Kiri looked up at Grendan as he took the Steel Blade and handed her a much more mundane yet reliable sword. "Why thank you Grendan, you're quite the sweetheart" Kiri said as she moved forward and struck at the enemies enchroaching on them.

If Xel moves, move to Q14, attack Crown 15(iron sword)

Defend.

Trade a Vulnerary for Xel's Secret Book when he goes by. Then, move to R14 and attack Crown 15 with the Iron Bow. Requesting Malia for stamina.

If danced and Crown 15 isn't dead, attack him again with the Iron Bow. If he is dead, attack Crown 14 with the Longbow.

Gramps continued to hold the line.

Gramps heals himself.

"You'll feel that in the morning!" taunted Xel as he backed up.

"Hey, you give me that look but I'm just being the messenger of truth," said Railen, sounding highly amused that he tickled off Vera.

"Damned vermin!" the Skaldr leader cursed. " Of course such cowards would attack in a swarm! To hell with them! Skaldr! Retreat! But marks my words, you haven't seen the last of Vokhar the Anvil!"

"Yes, tuck your tail and run, foreign dog!" the Crowned leader called out, laughing as the few remaining Skaldr fled. Once they were gone, though, her face turned serious. "Now if only they were our only problem. What's the hold up with capturing the Council?"

"Ma'am, they've holed up in one of the side chambers, but they've got some group protecting them that no one recognizes," answered a soldier. "We were pushing them back at first, but now they're in the hall and we're just losing troops just to scratch them."

"So the corrupt councilors rely on outsiders to save them. Typical," the leader growled. "Forget it, then. We could probably wear them down, but I'm not explaining wasting an entire army to get past half a dozen guards to Tiamath. What about the kid?"

"A runner just reported. He's on his way back to the Maw."

"Good enough. Crowned! We're done here! Let's go!"

As the rest of the enemy forces withdrew, the Company could at last breath a sigh of relief, echoed by the dignitaries, servants, and sole surviving guard behind them.

"Thank you," said a towering man with light skin and fair hair, approaching them with the Duchess on his arm. "My wife and I owe you our lives."

"We all do," echoed the Duchess. "If I can aid your young prince as either the Duchess of Sowtlund, or the Middle Councilor of Chamur, I swear to do it."

"For now, though, perhaps we can take a moment to gather ourselves?" interjected another Councilor, the older man. "I feel as if I might collapse at any moment."

"Of course," the Duchess nodded, then turned to the surviving guard. "Kugiri, see that the palace is clear, and rally any other guards who may have survived somewhere."

The guard saluted. "The barracks is well fortified, ma'am. I'm sure they held out."

"See to it, then. Everyone else, please, take this time to recover your strength. We will reconvene to discuss your petition in an hour."

Grendan heaved a sigh of relief as the retreat was sounded for the enemy. He paused to take stock of his comrades, finding Gramps curled up around an arrow. Fortunately, Grendan had just enough of his vulnerary left to get the older man back on his feet.

"Before we let you rest and calm yourselves after that unwelcome interruption, I have to ask: Are any of you injured?" he called to the civilians.

"Thanks lad," Gramps said to Grendan with a nod before he righted himself back on his feet, taking another swig of his pure water and ignoring all the blood on him as he started to use his staff to heal himself. Using the rod as a support as he stumbled over towards Xel, he slapped the dragon on the back. "You look like shit!" he said with a laugh.

"It took you long enough to clear out this rabble," Vera said as the other group returned with the prince, her bow held in one hand and... a basket of baked goods in the other.

"Muffin?" she asked, holding the basket out in front of Kiri, the manakete being the closest member of the party to the entrance. Unless you counted the Gramps-shaped bloodstains all over the floor just south of her.

As the enemy soldiers retreated Kiri's body simply gave out all at once, She knelt on the floor, and barely registered Vera as she held out a muffin to her. "No thank you I-." before she could finish her sentence, Kiri's breath caught in her throat and she made a slightly pained expression, as the small of Kiri's back began to glow a deep red, and in a blink a tail covered in similarly colored scales and sporting a spiked tip, sprouted from the spot.

Kiri for her part didn't seemed to have noticed.

That was close.

Zeera sat down by the wall beside her, and looked up toward the ceiling. With the way Gramps went down, she thought the enemies would break through for sure, but then they decided to retreat. With the way that one person dodged her spells, they must have been a really tough lot.

Xel huffed at Gramps and told him, "Well, at least I didn't eat shit like you just did," and then started chucking deeply as he transformed back to human form. At that moment he looked at Kiri on the ground and rolled his eyes. Back in his tribe this was common enough that no one had this kind of reaction to growing the potential. No pain, no gain after all. "Can't handle getting your tail dragon blooded? Breath in deeply. Breath out hard. Focus on the warmth of a violent fire and use that focus to release your life energy to reduce your foes into ash," explained Xel to his fellow lizard person.

Railen for his part came in with a small bag of cookies and rushed to Gramps. "Wow, someone finally took you down old man?" asked the young man jokingly to the old healer. Even so, Railen pulled out a cookie and offered it to Gramps. Not just any cookie though. A big tasty snickerdoodle.

Vera knelt down near Kiri and stared at her new tail as she set the muffins aside for now.

"I don't know much about manaketes," she said. "But I've raised enough girls to know that your body's going through some... changes... right now, and that you're likely going to have some questions."

"Not someone, boy. Some army! Gramps roared at Railen with a laugh.

He also grabbed the snickerdoodle.

Kiri gave both Xel and Vera an indignant look as staggered back to her feet. "Now listen here, both of you I've had quite enough of being treated like a hatchling and on top of that, true dragon's born with a tail, the only way they wouldn't have one is if they lost it...." she paused her rant for a moment. "Tail?" and looked behind herself. "My tail!" And just like that she seemed forget they both existed in favor of hugging the appendage like an old friend.

"Do the two of you need a moment alone?" Vera asked Kiri.

"Look away, you... brute!" she added to Xel.

Railen rolled his eyes and firmly planted his fist into his hips. "And next you're going to tell me the heroic tale of how you took every hit from every direction and it only ended up feeling like a tickle?" said Railen towards Gramps boisterous comment, pulling out his own snickerdoodle cookie to enjoy.

Xel slapped his hand right on his face and slowly pulled it down in a mild exasperated manner. "First off, brute is the best you got? You make me feel fury from my toes to my hair," said Xel in a dry manner, then following up by telling Kiri, "Do you feel different other than the tail? Unlike my tribe you and the other winged kind take only bits and pieces of your dragon being instead of accepting it as a full. A sudden change like this might mean that you've been granted more access into your bloods power........or you could have been hit with some odd magic. My knowledge is limited to the mutations that sometimes pop up back home. Could be what I think it is or it couldn't. Real crap shoot."

Kiri sighed a little a let go of her tail letting it hang behind her, she was going to have to adjust to this a bit more. "Xel, allow me to explain something to you. What you see before you is not my true-self. I gave up my power as a Dragon, in order to assume this form and walk with humans. Nothing is being granted to me. Through strife I am reclaiming what is mine."

With the battle over, Damien casually leans against a pillar and listens to the others banter. Apparently, Kiri had sprouted a tail, which meant that she can breathe fire again or something like that. Also, she gave up her power to walk among humans.

Come to think about it, this group had two Manaketes and a Dragon Laguz. They seem pretty cool, especially since Kiri and Xel pulled their weight in that last battle. This inspired Damien enough to draw. He took out a sheet of parchment, an ink well, and a quill pen, so he could envision the perfect dragon in his mind.

Using Xel and Kiri as references, he sketches the hypothetical dragon. There's only one thing wrong with the dragon, though. Why does it have a beefy arm sticking out of its back?

Grendan walked to Malia, pausing only briefly to raise an eyebrow at Astra (or, more accurately, the three dozen cupcakes they were carrying in a half-empty basket, and the fact that they were currently munching on two more with a blissful smile on their face). "How're you holding up lately? Been kinda busy, so I haven't had much chance to check up on you." He sat down nearby as he added, "I know, I know, you want to help. I just don't want you to overexert yourself, that's all."

Michel decided to amble over and nab a muffin from the basket Astra was carrying. "Where did you get all of these? I thought you all were protecting the prince, not making a bakery run." He asked, as he sat down against a nearby pillar with his new fruit-filled pastry prize.

After pocketing the parchment, Damien spots Astra offering everyone some lovely cupcakes. Michel was the first one to grab one, thus Damien waits until Michel to finish before grabbing one. It seems Damien is lucky this time. This one has extra cream on top!

“Thanks. That last battle took a lot out of us.”

Astra looked rather displeased at the others grabbing sweets from their basket. "Mine!" they snapped as they withdrew to protect their cupcakes, though the effect was rather ruined by how muffled their voice was.
