Yes, you can change anything about the character within the rules before he actually joins.

Everything looks good, except for one thing, and it's actually my mistake: he should have had 9 stat points, not 8, at 10th level, so he can add another point there.

I gave him Vantage and an extra HP.

I'll apply it to the sheet and then I'm pretty much good to go, right?

  • Name: Cava
  • Age: 1080
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Tall and tanned, Cava cuts a striking figure with her svelte figure as well as violet hair and ruby eyes. Dressed in an Egyptian blue silken dancer's garb with golden bangles, it makes her stand out even further. The Manakete wings are only icing on the cake.
  • Personality: Worldly and experienced, Cava has a sense of wanderlust that is still going strong even after all these years. Used to outliving her more transient acquaintances, the traveling performer simply tries to make the most out of every encounter and saves up every precious memory as treasures to be hoarded. She loves to press people's buttons and is a very mischievous tease.
  • Background: Born in a cave on an island that didn't have a name all those bygone years ago, Cava didn't really interact with the outside world until her third century due to constantly going into a state of hibernation during her younger years. Once she was fully more awake however, the then girl found out that there was a much wider world to be explored and that she still had so much to learn.
    • Disastrously washing up onto the mainland after finding out that she rather sucked at rafting, Cava then explored the wider world while growing older and wiser until she became the Manakete she was today. Dancing was found to have been her passion and the dark magics were picked up as a way to protect herself due to the desire to move out and about, which many years to hone the craft. Nowadays she tours the more out of reach places due to the rampant militaristic expansionism going on.

Time for my second character, already! I don't expect to add her until after this map, though.

  • Name: Grell Ipkis
  • Age: 29
  • Gender: F
  • Appearance: A tall, shapely woman, Grell stands at 5'11, with raven hair and sharp, piercing blue eyes. She wears a long, blue robe, concealing a revealing short skirt and tight blouse number with minimal armor, all grey. Her guitar is slung over her back at all times.
  • Personality:
    • Grell is dark, but not edgy dark. She has an air of confidence that defies expectations, and is really anxious to bash some heads, defiant to the end and kind of stubborn.
    • However, she is also a kind soul, who enjoys cooking and making music with her four-string guitar as much as putting fools in their place.
    • Grell really lives in the moment, not taking a bit to plan before throwing fists or magics. She really excels with a Blue Oni, someone to keep her cool and focused, kind of a point-and-shoot kind of tactic.
  • Background:
    • Grell was born and raised in a small Reignbor town, keeping to herself for the most part. Her parents were both of average wealth, her mother dobbling in magic and her father hand-to-hand fighting. As a result, she picked up both, but less efficiently than her parents.
    • As she grew older, her town got worse and worse, taken over by "new management", who were much friendlier to Vissan than they were her own people. However, there wasn't enough capable fighters for them to successfully rise up, so she stayed behind and trained, biding her time, even after her father died of stress and old age.
    • Eventually, Tigerlily arrived, and she knew, right there and then, it was her time to strike...

Bugger! I'm in!

Giving you a character sheet might not be swift as I have final exams this week.

Wryte, as the Game Master, you wouldn't mind a character that has knowledge of the titular Emblem such as the legends around it but not where the pieces are? Or a Vissian character?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.

  • Name: Amystra
  • Age: Old. Looks early twenties.
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: A woman of roughly average height and sleight build, with sharp features, piercing grey eyes, and hip-length black hair, usually left flowing freely. She usually wears a long, dark blue dress with golden trip and jewelry, with sleeves that open below the elbow, which is very form-fitting but conceals everything beside her forearms below the neck. Under it, she usually wears fairly thin shoulder-length white gloves, usually with heavier dark blue fingerless gloves that come up to her mid forearm. Over her dress she wears a similarly colored dark blue and gold cloak. Under her rather covering clothes, her body is covered with purple marks and runes, which can occasionally be barely seen peeking over her collar.
  • Personality: Generally reserved and calm, she'd rather be tending a library than fighting on a battlefield. She's rather distant, and speaks in a rather... archaic form of the language. When facing Vissian mages, however, she changes demeanour... starkly, becoming downright sadistic.
  • Background: Since before the First Aggression, Amystra has maintained a rather obscure library, its existence unknown to most of the world. With a handful of other manaketes, she maintained this library in relative peace, some scholars of obscure history providing the occasional interaction with the outside world. Mostly, the library was left alone - those who made the trek through the woods to it were often disappointed by the rather mundane information there, not the esoteric and world-shaking revelations that might be expected of a mostly-forgotten library deep in the woods. The payment for entry was to bring your own knowledge to add to the library, most often of current events. And, more recently, those events were of war, of Vissian expansion, but none of that was their problem, surely? What could an empire want with their little old library?
The answer is what power-hungry mages on a longer leash than is healthy usually want: more power. Eventually, a dark mage from the Empire, either seeking it or chasing an enemy through the woods, stumbled across the library. Having heard of the legends, he demanded entry. After being politely rebuffed, citing their, rather simple, entry fee, he demanded entry at the point of a... tome. After being slightly more firmly rejected, as people who can turn into dragons generally don't take threats well, he followed up on his threats. They followed up on theirs.
This went unexpectedly poorly for them. To wit, the dark mage cast a withering curse on them which simply killed her fellow librarians. By what luck, good or ill, she survived, Amystra knows not, but she lost all her draconic powers - her wings, her prodigious strength, her breath weapon... whether she lost her effective agelessness as well is unknown. Passing out from the dark magics coursing through her, she stirred to the mage ordering his troops to set the library ablaze. By the time she was able to rouse herself fully, the library was naught but ashes and the Vissians were long gone. Scavenging what little she could from the library (which was, to be honest, not much), she found that despite her newfound lack of physical might, the remnants of the curse had given her an affinity for those same magics...

Hello! Though not Wryte, I’ll say that I’m really feeling your signup so far! You’re obviously concerned with putting thought and depth into the backstory, an attitude which I like.

We mustn’t be careless, though, so I’ll point out a couple of things:

  • I think that you’ve still got a point to allocate somewhere; we want Amystra to be the culmination of her abilities, after all!
  • While I do think you can take Gifted – four points are nice enough on their own – I would say that there might be some other options you shouldn’t forget before you’re done:
    • You’re currently giving Amystra 1 Speed and a growth rate for Speed of 0. Now, a build with significantly low Speed is feasible – just ask Azure with Sophia – but you pretty much need Wary to do it. Wary, to quote Wryte, ‘doubles the value of the Speed stat for determining if the user is subject to double attacks’, which basically means that in the majority of situations Amystra would only need half of the Speed that she would otherwise. I’d still put five or six points in there and give Speed a growth rate of 1 but she wouldn’t be facing constant enemy double attacks.
    • Alternatively, you could forego Wary and bring up Amystra’s Speed. That makes taking something else significantly more viable; Gifted’s still okay but I’d also think about Proficient. It’s just been upgraded, now not only giving a free Proficiency level but also a permanent 5% critical hit chance boost to the Proficiency to which it applies. Moreover, Proficiency: Dark would fit really well with Amystra’s backstory as I understand it!

So, yep – just some unofficial suggestions and advice! Feel free to take it or leave it as you like; hope I was able to show you a thing or three.

Sorry not sorry

(I’ll stop with the memes now.)

Amystra is looking good; this build is turning into a very competent magical glass cannon! One thing that I would say is that beforehand I was talking about Feats that you can take at Level 1; for a Level 10 Feat you can take any number of powerful and thematically appropriate things, meaning that if you replaced Gifted with Proficient at Level 1, for Level 10 you could take:

  • Adept, which would give Amystra a 1/6 chance to make a second strike whenever she makes a strike. Just 1/6 more attacks generally.
  • Overwhelm, which would give Amystra’s strikes a 1/6 chance to ignore the enemy’ Resistance completely. With her Magic stat, that would be quite powerful.
  • Split Shot, which would allow Amystra to use her Bonus Action to attack two enemies at range instead of one – potentially every turn. This Feat has been changed recently and is, in my view, very strong, so I’d love to see someone try it out!
  • Sure Strike, which would give Amystra’s strikes a 1/4 to automatically hit. Nerfed a little recently, since we’ve moved to a True Hit system that means that we hit more often anyway, but still good!

Now, this doesn’t mean that you can’t take Gifted at Level 1 and Proficient at Level 10; still, I’d encourage you to think about taking Proficient at Level 1 and any of the above at Level 10. At the end of the day, though, it’s your build; feel free to do as you’d like!

Name: Cassandra

  • Age: 33
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: A tall, tan-skinned, athletically built woman with fairly short, messy black hair with a stark white streak in it, a short braid hanging down onto one shoulder from just behind her ear. She wears armor that was clearly once part of a uniform, but has since been stripped of any insignia that would indicate to what nation that uniform belonged.
  • Personality: At first glance, Cassandra is a relatively amiable and easygoing woman. Look past that admittedly thin facade, however, and she's a bitter, cynical woman who was betrayed by everything she believed in. Interact with her for more than about five minutes and the friendliness she tries so very hard to show gives way to snark and general disillusionment with the world. And yet, at her core, she's still the wide-eyed idealist she was when she was young, someone who truly wants nothing more than to help people and to make the world a better place.
  • Background: A part-time mercenary living in a small town in Ephlund but originally from elsewhere, little is known about her past beyond that and the fact that she harbors some beef with the Empire of Vissan. She spends most of her time fishing or reading, occasionally teaching youths from her town the ways of the spear, an art in which she is incredibly proficient. Perhaps the only hints to her past are the well-maintained spear that hangs on the wall of her home, and the uniform she wears, stripped of any insignia, that nevertheless bears some resemblance to that of Vissan...
In truth, the name of woman called Cassandra is Hildegarde von Mitternacht, a former officer of the Imperial military. The bastard daughter of an Imperial Count and his Murgavian mistress, it would have taken a miracle for her to inherit much of anything. The Count von Mitternacht had four trueborn children. And indeed, that was not a miracle that was to come to pass, no matter how much the Count doted on her. The Count favored his mistress over his wife, having married for purely political purposes and found no love in the relationship, and it showed in how he treated his children, despite his best efforts. This, naturally, did not endear Hildegarde to her half-siblings, and the only one she really got along with was her half-sister.
Naturally, of course, she died, in an insurgent attack on a family vacation. Though her family was not the target of the attack, she and her sister happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as one tried to escape. The pair hadn't even noticed him until the three collided. With a glance back at the knights pursuing him, he delivered a deep slash to Hildegarde's sister, hoping the knights would chose to help her over him. While he was right, he was caught by another patrol of knights shortly after. The wound proved to be severe, and Hildegarde watched her sister bleed out in her arms.
The event distanced Hilde and her remaining siblings further, each blaming her for their sister's death. Less than a year later, Hilde enlisted in the Imperial army. Having always had something of an affinity for animals, she joined the cavalry. On her first deployment, however, she came across a young, yet nevertheless adult, pegasus, saving her from a poacher. Finding herself unable to really get away from the pegasus, she dubbed her Brynhild, after a character from an old folktale her father liked to read to her, and brought her with.
She served with distinction, quickly rising through the ranks to become an officer. She eventually found herself on a mission to eliminate a group of insurgents in Durvalla. Despite only shaky intelligence and her protests, under her commander's orders, she and her men set fire to the village they'd been told was harboring the insurgents they were looking for. Their intelligence turned out to be wrong, and after her commander was let off scot free for this mistake, she resigned in disgust, fleeing the Empire, eventually settling in Ephlund.
