The nail clippers IMO serve a dual purpose. One to symbolise Cocona's growing acceptance that she is a lesbian, and another as a reference to Salt's passion for music (he had a guitar and a keyboard as a child).

Another question, is Anti-Escapism Aesop a suitable trope for the series? Pure Illusion is mainly depicted as a harsh wasteland where it's very possible to get killed in while the real world is colorful, bright and cheerful. Also the finale has Cocona reject the notion that reality is dull and grey, and fully embracing reality with Papika.

While Cocona is lost in where to go in her life at the beginning of the series, you can see that she never really wanted to go on adventures with Papika until around episode 3. And ultimately, the conclusion of the series has them escaping Pure Illusion into reality while accepting that while it's still fun to occasionally go on more adventures in Pure Illusion, unlike your typical Isekai series, the duo remain in reality.

Okay, but seriously now, what is the connection between nail clippers and lesbians? Because I don't see any.

[up]No, because Cocona didn't go into Pure Illusion to escape reality - and wasn't all to keen on going there at first, trying to cling to her dull life - and going there was what let her grow as a person, instead of just aimlessly drifting through life.

And the series doesn't treat Pure Illusion as something the girls must leave behind in order to "move on" in life. Sure they don't move there permanently, but it's made really clear that their adventures there are far from over.

[up][up] Fingering your partner is painful if your nails are too long. Hence the nail clippers connection.

Huh, I would never in a million years make that connection.

It's not like it's even unusually earthy for Flip Flappers symbolism. Remember the interlinked shells?

Looking back, this anime is probably the most explicit about its characters' homosexuality that I've ever seen that doesn't actually feature a kiss.

WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN SO HARD STUDIO 3HZ THAT'S ALL I WANT

[up]They need a reason to sell the OVA. It's gonna be there.

Kashimashi only had a kiss in the OVA. It was a wedding as well..

Oh, is there an OVA in the pipeline? I'm already excited for that.

It's been fun.

[up]In the correct timeline it is. Sadly we're still stuck in a slightly shittier alternate universe so nothing announced yet.

A wedding OVA with kiss would literally make this my favorite series of all time, though.

You know, watching the first episode of Little Witch Academia today made me really appreciate how Flip Flappers handled exposition. I liked the episode and all, but LWA in particular had several expositions dumps in the beginning all telling the audience how the world works, while Flip Flappers dumps the audience into Pure Illusion and says "Welcome to Pure Illusion!". Neither Papika nor Hidaka nor Sayuri explain Pure Illusion and its mechanics to the viewer, and the viewer is left to pay attention and form their own judgment.

LWA's case isn't even the worst I've seen, but it made me realise that most anime nowadays can't even entrust simple information to the audience without spoon feeding them at all times. Which makes Flip Flappers all the more special to me, anyway. In a sense, the show doesn't spoonfeed you on Jungian psychology or what the symbolism mean, but instead respects your judgment and intelligence. I find that regrettably rare in anime nowadays.

Wow, it's hard to translate spoken interviews when you can't see or hear people speaking. Is this a transcript of an interview that was filmed?

It's been fun.

I find those reddit re watches very handy. I've never posted in one, but quite often I see a post about one and it reminds me of something I'd been meaning to watch for a while.

In this case I watched Flip Flappers over the last week.

I really enjoyed it a LOT. There was a lot of discussion about how good it was a couple of years ago, but I think the fact it doesn't have a solid easy way to describe the hook means I glossed over it a little.

I'd give it a 9.5/10, bar the fact the fan-service annoyed me a bit, which brings it down to a 9.

EDIT:I also really dig the fact Cocona and Papika actually told each other they love them. That was nice. Even if they didn't get a kiss.

I also skimmed a few of the reddit threads. The KKK memes are great. Seriously, who decided to dress the leaders that way?

Nah, it uses its concepts pretty well. It's a sci-fi romance that uses surreal imagery and pop-culture references to flesh out its plot and cast. It's not a wasteland of half-formed ideas like, say, The Rolling Girls.

Yeah, give it some time. Flip Flappers actually explores its themes well. I remember appreciating how the surreal atmosphere of the anime didn’t muddle its basic concepts.

Remember the flashback scene of little Cocona and Yayaka waiting for a medical examination and discussing how creepy and humiliating it is. Cocona drops this gem: They stick those weird tubes into you.

Just what on earth are they doing to those kids? And what trope is this an example of?

Humankind is like a train. No matter how powerful the locomotive is, it can only travel as fast as its slowest car allows it to.
