As in TV cartoons for kids. Has there even been product placement in these kinds of shows? Would it work? Or would using fictional brands be more preferable?

If you haven't noticed, most cartoons are just glorified toy commercials. Granted some are so good you won't even care.

[up] And usually any product placement on top of that is, "Season 2 has new outfits! Now this character drives a car! Buy the upgraded sword/armour/horse that our hero's discovered in the new Plot Cave of Magic!"

He Man And The Masters Of The Universe wasn't a show, it was a half-hour toy commercial. Mattel came out with the line of toys first, then they hired Filmation to create a cartoon show to sell even more of them.
