claws were generally classic weapons for Monks in FF so i would assume so

In a lot of FF games, if the original target of your attack gets killed before it's your turn, the attack gets redirected to another enemy. At least, that's how it works in VII and X.
Speaking of the original games, I actually made Seth Stiles in XIV today. If anyone wants to see a (kinda janky) photo I took of him in the game during the first cutscene, let me know and I'll put it on Imgur or something.
