The crystal-bearer idea I mentioned before. All but one of the last generation were killed off by another very powerful crystal-bearer, and they too was killed by the last ditch attack of their very last victim.
Now the a new generation rose up with only the survivor to try to guide them, including the bearer of the killer's crystal, although nowhere near as powerful as his predecessor.
