After making a few kids' anime thread which died due to lack of attention I decided that all kids' anime that doesn't warrant a thread on its own will be posted here, on top of general kids' anime discussions.

To start off, how is kids' anime actually being defined? Is it really have to be actual kodomomuke or simply being appealing to kids but not everyone else? This is important because there are anime that is being considered as kids' anime without actually being one, Monster Strike being once of its victims and it appeared that the upcoming Puzzle & Dragons X will be treated as such.

What kinds of kids' anime did you have in mind? Hamtaro, Guardian Fairy Michel, Pokemon, Yokai Watch''?

What constitutes kids' anime anyway? o.o I can't think of too many anime off the top of my head that are JUST for kids.

The Protomen enhanced my life.

To me, only anime with actual kids (or at least child looking teens, but not adults) as protagonists, simplistic premise, easy-to-follow plots and actual marketing to kids can be considered as kids' anime.

A few examples of currently airing kids' anime which are specifically, but not exclusively for kids that I can think of is Duel Masters VSRF, Battle Spirits Double Drive and 12-sai.: Chiccana Mune no Tokimeki.

Aikatsu Stars! is sort of straddling the line and Cardfight!! Vanguard Stride Gate-hen is definitely not one.

Speaking of Pokemon and Yo-kai Watch, both are interesting cases in which while they have trappings of typical kids' anime, I personally considered them general audiences anime rather than actual kids' anime due to their appeal towards teens and adults.

Pokemon is definitely a kids' anime, since it doesn't try very hard to appeal to older audiences.

Most anime is kids' anime, though.

[up] Anime is divided up into 3 age groups.

  • Kodomomuke, Aimed at kids like 9 and under
  • Shonen/Shojo, Aimed at kids 10 to 18
  • Seinen/Josei, Aimed at 18+ but primarally college aged and otaku

Most Kodomomuke are stuff like Doraemon, Ojamajo Doremi, Pretty Cure and Hamataro. Long runners though will have specials and movies that aim more for the older audiences who once watched the shows when they were young.

That is how anime is classified in Japan, but there are shonen anime which does get classified as kids anime anyway by anime bloggers and viewers outside of Japan. Monster Strike, as stated at the top of this page is an example.

@Kaxrida: X and Y as well as XY and Z have a major appeal for Sakuga, though.

Here's the first impressions of Fall 2016 kids' anime that I'm watching along with Summer 2016 carryovers:

Monster Hunter Stories RIDE ON episode 1: I never played the games, but the cartoony style of character interactions clash seamlessly with the conventional styles of other aspects, amusingly enough. But I really hope that the main characters would stop acting immaturely like what they did in the episode....

Digimon Universe Applimonsters episode 1: Haru is a very unusual kids' anime protagonist. I like the way the digital space is represented and the character interactions are fun, but what is with the red eyes at the last shot before the credits?

Puzzle & Dragons X episode 14: Ace has certainly grow as a guild dragon caller, but he should stop relying too much on protection based drop generation if he wants to go beyond his current level. The way the SDF deal with things irked me a lot, though. By the way, just admit that you have a thing for Hal, Ace.

Monster Strike episode 42: Shino has been possessed like how Haruma were. Why does Ren is targeted by the monster summoned from the MS world? Will this tie into the summer special?

[up]Never heard of that.

On other news, Monster Strike 2nd season starts on 1st April. I wondered what kind of implications of monsters appearing in physical world would bring, on top of what is Dora scheming from opening Pandora's box. What I really want, though, is Lyra appears again, with actual romance with Ren.

Cross posted from the spring 2017 anime thread.

Previews for kids' anime not covered there or RC:

  • The Snack World: Pretty average 3DCG anime with some modern twist of the fantasy genre. It's no Little Witch Academia, but worth a shot.
  • 100% Pascal Sensei: Average kiddy humor anime in vein of Heybot and Oshiri Kajiri Mushi. Hopefully not as offensive, though.
  • Akindo Sei no Little Peso: Same as above.
  • Makeruna! Aku no Gundan: Again, same as above.
  • Mori no Yousei: Kinoko no Musume: Not sure about this one, but I'll give it a shot. Anything can happen, but don't expect anything similar to 12-sai: Chiccana Mune no Tokimeki.
  • Puri Puri Chii-chan: Same as above, but I won't bother with this one.
  • Tomita Hyper Rescue Drive Head: Kidou Kyuukyuu Keisatsu: Will it be another old school style anime or similar to Chousouku Henkei Grozetter? Hard to say, but the mecha designs seemed to pointing towards the former. Expect immature wacky hijinks in vein of Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On.

The following anime are sequels, thus watching earlier seasons beforehand are necessary.

  • Beyblade Burst God
  • Lilu Lilu Fairilu: Mahou no Kagami
  • Monster Strike 2nd Season
  • Future Card Buddyfight Battsu
  • Idol Time Pripara
  • Aikatsu Stars! 2nd "Hoshi no Tsubasa"
  • Duel Masters 2017: Technically this is not a sequel, but the protagonist of this anime is the son of the Duel Masters VS's protagonist, which will lead to missed references.

Whoa, this totals up to 14 kids' anime this season, the highest ever in any seasons. Now, will a new Battle Sprits anime come out or Battle Spririts Double Drive would continue? I don't watch them, but I don't want the anime series to be end.

Now, why there is such an increase in kids' anime these years? Demographic changes should have reduce the quantity of kids' anime being made, or perhaps adults started to enjoy them?
