Yes, the Empire does take prisoners at times. Heck within the first ten minutes or so of ANH, Darth Vader very specifically orders the passengers of Leia's ship brought to him alive (presumably to interrogate them on the whereabouts of the Death Star plans).

I never remember specific lines for that scene, just rebel soldiers in silly hats and uniforms getting mowed down in droves and Vader crushing the trachea of this one dude who apparently looked almost exactly the same almost twenty years before the movie happened. It always came off to me as "kill shit, leave a few important people for Vader to necksnap for lulz".

Granted, he does then personally choke to death the one guy that was brought to him alive.

That necksnap is Vader's Establishing Character Moment, and it does a really damn good job of that for me.

but HOW?

Ah, that's the Vader Motivational Method in action. He needs live captives so he can intimidate them by killing them one by one. That or he's only talking about civilian passengers, not the crew or soldiers.

I'm pretty sure I remember a brief shot of stormtroopers escorting captured rebel soldiers.

You are remembering correctly. Also a handful of droids were captured as well.

I also saw the choking just more as Vader getting frustrated/annoyed in the moment more than anything else. And if you want to throw the TV stuff into it, the Empire also takes prisoners in Rebels as well.

They also captured the rebels when they first tried to blow up Death Star II's shield generator, before the Ewoks attack. When Han, Leia, and Co. are being escorted out of the building you see all the rebel soldiers kneeling on the ground.

Jimmy Smits confirmed that he's back as Bail Organa in Rogue One.

So...like, is this movie going to end with everybody dying or getting captured?

Entirely possible. Some think that one or two people might make it out alive. We'll see how things go.

I'd like to point out the sort of war movie that this is apparently inspired by (Saving Private Ryan comes to mind, as does The Dirty Dozen) had a few people survive, even if most got killed off.

Largely unfounded prediction: Jiang Wen's character, in all his bearded, weapon-loving, bassy-voiced glory, seems like the type of dude who's liable to die.

Jimmy Smits has a cameo.

I like bridging the OT and prequels like this and Mon Mothma.

We are going to get so much Dramatic Irony with Bail, I just know it. The last time we see him in the film is probably going to be tearjerking.

I'm not surprised. I kind of expected him to pop up at some point (especially since Mon Mothma is appearing as well).

What's funny is years ago he joked about one day filming a cameo for a rerelease of A New Hope where it'd just be him looking up in the sky in terror right before the Death Star fires.

It'd be hilarious if they did that and it was the extent of his involvement.

Depending on the level of involvement Bail has in this story, it's quite possible that when the Death Star showed up over Alderaan, he knew exactly what was about to happen.

Poor guy...

Yeah that could actually be a really tragic and powerful scene (especially if he knows what's about to happen and that he's powerless to stop it). Kind of like SKB taking out Hosnian Prime in TFA, but much more emotional since it's a character that we know/care about already.

Part of me wants him to get a quick scene with Leia as well, to really hammer that home. But IDK how you'd do that logistically at this point (plus they'd need to recast her obviously).

The only problem with showing Bail during the destruction of the planet is that ANH is already well underway by that point. Unless a significant portion of this movie happens concurrently with it that would seem needlessly bleak compared to ending it with them successfully transmitting the plans.

True, it would kind of depend on how the story goes. I just want it because it'd go a long way towards fixing, retroactively, what I consider to be one of the biggest missteps/missed opportunities of not just ANH, but the OT as a whole.
