Birthright: Legacy of Long-Ago Legends (Sign-up Thread)

We've heard about them from all corners of the globe - great figures with accomplishments and abilities far more than human. Be they hero or villain, beast or god, myths of the extraordinary and the impossible interweave themselves beneath our imagination, the promise of might beyond mere mortal. But, with ages long past since they walked beside us, what was once mundane is now heroic, and what was heroic now merely tales of fiction, of superstitious minds whose stories are treated simply such.

As they believed, so we believed...

Perhaps the gods grew tired of our blasphemous disregard. Perhaps the blood of heroes sought chance to prove themselves to this new age. Whatever the cause, an awakening has begun in this era of mythlessness and banality. With a single city at its epicenter, people rise, reborn with the strength of old, and inexplicable knowledge of their birthright...

But the people of now are not the figures of old. Who's to say how their succession will rise? There are no more prophets or speakers of fate. It is only for them to decide...

HI everybody! This is the new Sign-up thread for Birthright, which I'll be taking over from Starbound 2. (Kudos to Starbound for starting this up in the first place.) Don't worry though; the RP may be under new management, but the concept remains the same, with just a few minor changes. All of you are (supposedly,) the descendants of beings from myth and legend; anywhere from the awe-inspiring Gods of the heavens above to the mighty heroes of the Earth below, inheriting their powers and/or abilities as well as certain personality traits. The funny thing is, you weren't born with these abilities, nor were you ever aware of your inheritance. And yet, from anywhere to a few months ago to even today, suddenly, your true powers and skills awoke, and you knew who and what you were, be it the distant offspring of Zeus, Odin, or Krishna themselves, or instead from less celestial yet no less prestigious figures such as Pericles, Sigfried, or Cu Chulain.

Of course, the question remains: Why now? Why after all this time have you suddenly became aware of this apparent birthright and the amazing abilities that come with it? Why now and not at any other point in your life? And yet, regardless of this, more questions also remain unanswered. Regardless of how you obtained these abilities and this birthright, you have them. So what do you intend do with them? And how will others with less than savory intentions intend to make use of that knowledge?

Now, while there is going to be an actual plot, you are still free to run off and do whatever the heck you want to do. I've really only got a few rules here, though be sure to keep them in mind:

1.Don't be a dick. I'm a pretty lax GM, but even so, there are still unspoken standards that must be adhered to. No Godmodding, no autohitting, no controlling other people's players (or characters created by the GM for that matter,) without permission, etc. Beyond that though, please keep it civil. Be respectful of the other players, and don't try to hog the limelight all to yourself. (As has happened before.) Again, don't be a dick.

2.Your characters may inherit the abilities of the Gods and legends of old, but they are still not actually those same Gods and legends. For example, if you were descended from, say, Poseidon, you might be capable of causing a heavy downpour in a localized area or letting out a large blast of pressurized water from the palms of your hands, but you wouldn't be able to flood an entire city or even just a cityblock. You might be capable of more extreme feats depending on how the RP proceeds, but nothing that would be on gamebreaking levels.

3.No gamebreaking abilities. I'm not just talking otherwise acceptable abilities such as water or fire control that are simply taken too far, no; I mean teleportation, time-travel, healing, etc. Anything that gives a player too much of an edge over the others, or otherwise removes most of the challenge from RP. If you're stuck in a locked room, what' the point of trying to find a way out if you can just 'port? I'm also not completely against healing, so long as it's only used outside of combat situations, but using them in the middle of a fight would be gamebreaking for the purposes of this RP.

Hey. Here we go.

- Name: Tahlia Bell

- Age: 17

-Gender: Female

-Appearance: About 168 centimetres tall, brown hair, black eyes. She is quite angular in feature, and a pale in skin. She wears casual clothing, and tends to wear a black leather choker, with silver stud earrings. Her dog is a pure-bred German Shepard, who wears a red collar and is impeccably trained.

-Personality: Shy, but occasionally snarky. Afraid of her powers. Is very polite, when she talks at all, to avoid inflaming anyone,and tends to avoid conflict or strife. Love animals and computers (things which cannot be influenced by her powers), but particularly loves her dog. Has some minor abandonment issues because she never knew her father, so tends to be really clingy if she manages to make friends.

-Biography: Born and raised by a single mother, Fay, who was a dog handler in the police force. Fay tried to keep her separate to her work, and succeeded, but died when Tahlia was 15, leaving all her possessions, and the dog, to her. She caused a fight to break out on the street, and her mother died breaking it up. Ever since then she has carried that guilt around with her. She makes money online, gaming and selling items gotten for real money, as a hobby, but works at the animal shelter. She found out about her powers when several fights broke out at her workplace, an unusual occurrence with one common factor, her. She became scared of them when she realised the effect they could have on other people, and now wears sunglasses and tries to avoid speaking.

- Mythological Ancestor: She is descended from Eris, the greek goddess of strife.

- Powers and Abilities: She can incite strife in people who look in her eyes, but cannot control her ability. It is possible that, with greater control of her powers, she can calm people down as well. She can also create conflict in people who hear her voice, and direct that using her voice.

-Other Skills: Good with technology and information gathering. Also good with animals. Her mother taught her shooting and self defence, and she is decent at both, but mainly relies on her dog.

-Accessories: Inherited her mother's house and belongings, and lives with a very protective, very well trained German Shepard, whom her mother was the handler of.

Just to make sure before I sign up, 'assets' in this instance means 'objects that the character owns', correct?

It does now. It was going to just change it accessories, but I decided to stick to 'assets' to try and stay close to the original character sheet. 'Accessories' is just a clearer and more definite term though, so that's ultimately what we're going with.

Appearance: Black menacing eyes and short black hair.6'2, big buff build. He wears regular clothes, except there of brown, black, and purple color. Has wrappings around his head and a hood, concealing everything except his cold black eyes. He hides a weapon inside his clothes.
Personality: Likes to be feared, in fact, he revels in it. Doesn't feel much emotion otherwise. Can't feel fear, but not saying he is brave. Hates pretty much everyone.
Mythological Ancestor: You may of guessed by now, but: Deimos, God of fear, dread and terror.
Powers and Abilities: Can't feel fear and terror, as he IS fear and terror. Has a small 5ft aura of fear, and can make people feel terror by looking into their eyes.
Accessories:Some money, some extra clothes and wrappings.
Biography: Lived his life normally up to about 11-12, where he started to become much more hateful and started to bully the kids in his school. At 14, he started to assault people on the street and started to use weapons. He was put in jail and started to look like he was done with his rampage. He started to wear wrappings on his head at 16, everyone at his school feared him, even the adults. The police went to the school to check up on him, and they were scared of him too. His parents were scared too. They decided that he was best left to his own wishes, so they took him out of school and bought him a house for him to stay at. They mail him food and money, not wishing to go near him.

@secretlyasuperhero: I'm sorry about this, but I'm going to have to ask you to edit your Sign-up so that it matches the current Sign-up sheet template. Other than that, it's fine. You might also want to work on your touching your Biography up to make it more coherent, because as it is now, it's still a bit hard to make sense out of it, though it isn't a huge deal.

@Skiller 2: Mostly fine, except for one thing; his age. As stated in the first post of the thread, everyone only started gaining their powers and discovering their birthrights a few months ago, whereas your characters' apparently had them for about half his life. You can either just age him down so that it's only been a few months since he got them, or edit his backstory so that he only got them a few months back while keeping his age the same, but you can't just leave it the way it is now.

Yup. Accepted, so long as 'suddenly [becoming] hateful' doesn't have anything to do with his powers or birthright, because that seems to have started up 2-3 years before his powers did.

• Name: Aran Sūn
• Age: 26
• Gender: Male
• Appearance:
  • Would look like an average Asian-British guy if he bothered to take care of himself. 6'0" and a bit too much on the scrawny side, with baggy brown eyes and dishevelled black hair that he usually just throws up in a small ponytail. His 5-o'-clock shadow is permanent and his lazy posture always gives the impression of a guy who just got out of bed. He can be pretty handsome if he tidies himself up, but that only happens about once in a blue moon.
  • At the very least he keeps his clothes prim and proper, often sporting a dress shirt and black trouser combo that's perhaps a bit too formal even for a librarian. Even his off-work clothes lean towards business-casual. He's been affectionally described by his sister as 'looking like a hobo on his way to a job interview'.
• Personality: Aran's a guy who tries hard to act mature, but you don't have to dig deep to find the childish ambitions and desire for adrenaline. And while he does try to be polite, he constantly suffers from foot-in-mouth syndrome due to the complete lack of filter between his brain and his mouth. Despite those shortcomings he's still a good guy; friendly to most, diligent in his work, and fairly satisfied (if a bit bored) by his lot in life.
  • Since obtaining his birthright last month, Aran's been feeling a little more... hyper than usual. Reckless impulses have become more difficult to resist, and it becomes harder each day to sit still and concentrate on his work. He's not sure how he feels about the change yet.
• Mythological Ancestor: Spring-heeled Jack, the Terror of London.
• Powers and Abilities:
  • The power to leap distances far greater than the average human, and to do so with no ill-effect on his body. Like any physical activity this power can be enhanced with exercise, but even without it he can easily clear a height of up to 10 feet in a single bound.
  • The power to shoot blue and white flames from his mouth on command. They aren't particularly strong flames, and are more likely to just cause distress rather than scarring damage.
• Other Skills:
  • Aran has skills in administrative and organisational work from his time at the library. He knows his way around a computer well enough, and has a dedicated work ethic that ensures he'll always gets the job done, regardless of how disagreeable it may be.
  • He can drive a scooter, and has a license for it. He tries to be a responsible driver, but has been guilty of skirting through red/amber lights a fair few times.
  • Since obtaining his birthright Aran's started getting in some regular exercise. Mostly at the gym, but sometimes using his power for hopping around his neighbourhood rooftops. The benefits have just recently began to show themselves; no muscles yet, but he can travel a fair distance now without getting winded.
• Accessories:
  • A studio apartment on the third floor of a complex. Nothing swanky, but it's serviceable. Has a fortnightly rent that he usually makes on time.
  • Owns a Lambretta Li 150 scooter. Like Aran himself it could use a bit of a clean-up, but it gets the job done.
  • Apart from those, he doesn't really own anything outside of what you'd expect for a guy living by himself.
• Biography: Not much to tell. He grew up in urban England with his two parents and big sister. His parents were strict enough to keep him in line and teach him responsibility at an early age, but not so much that they curbed his immaturity completely. It was also them that hammered into him the virtues of honesty and diligence- perhaps a bit too much in the case of the former.
  His mother's promotion at work is what dragged the family over to America, just when Aran was making the transition from high school to college. It was a struggle to settle in, but he charged through and came out the other end with his bachelors degree. After that he set off from home to get his own apartment, and soon after that claimed his job as a library assistant. His parents are supportive of his work, but are too busy with their own to keep in regular contact. His sister likes to drop in when she can, though.

• Name: Helena Kyparissos

• Age: 23

• Gender: Female

• Appearance: Helena is a self described 'wog', a traditional (read: previously racist, now slightly endearing in the right context) Australian term for those of Greek descent, on her father's side and has a touch of an accent to boot. Nevertheless, she does tend to break most stereotypes and is a little taller than most girl's here age, a hair under 6 foot with long, elegant fingers. Her skin is a little lighter than her father's, a touch of coffee and long black curls tied back or slung over a shoulder much of the time. Her face is somewhat attractive but not in a conventional sense, a little soft edged and a long-ish nose between her deep brown eyes. Aside from the occasional freckle her skin is unblemished and has a toned frame neither bulky nor overly spindly. She tends to wear band T-shirts (often black) with either shorts or denim jeans and old, brown hiking boots. Helena loathes make-up and jewelry but does keep a silver pendant on a chain from her grandparents.

• Personality: Helena Kyparissos, despite her newly apparent relation to the legendarily gloomy ruler of the dead, is a rather extroverted and friendly individual if a little overly talkative at times. Her sense of humor is sardonic and perhaps a touch cynical at times but her persistent smile suggests she isn't so pessimistic. She is easy to talk to and is the sort of person that gets asked for directions wherever they go, regardless of how lost they actually are. In all fairness she is rather intelligent, albeit mostly as a mathematician and programmer, and does her best to be helpful. This attitude has been extended to the dead since the awakening of her powers, perhaps one of the reason they tend to heed her occasional requests. Helena was very afraid of death as child and quite anxious about the whole concept. Music was her main coping method, especially heavy metal, and is an accomplished drummer as far as amateurs go. Her birthright allowed her accept it as a necessary end but still frets about her role in enforcing it. She also has a little trouble dealing with situations in a serious manner, making her seem insensitive at times though the humour is just a defense mechanism.

• While Helena isn't terribly fond of the status quo (both the band and the general concept) she does strive for balance in the world, particularly between life and death as well as plenty and destitution since her powers came. The two aspects most associated with her predecessor, Hades. She also tries to look after and, to an extent, console the dead wherever possible.

• Biography: Helena was born in Melbourne, Australia, her father was a Greek immigrant engineer and her mother a citizen of Brittish/Irish descent. She had two brothers and a sister, all older than herself and possibly even louder, at least in their youth and kept their parents on their toes. Still, it was a loving and close family if not too financially prosperous. Their parents made efforts to keep the children in school and paid for music lessons, Helena herself taking an interest in drums. She tended to worry a lot as a kid, ever since her grandfather died she feared her family could die any minute. As a result she seemed very shy and quiet for much of primary school, anxious constantly until her eldest brother introduced her to Heavy Metal. The violent music surprisingly helped her calm down, feel more confident and less afraid - she became more extroverted and gained a lot of friends by the time high school came around, albeit in the nerdy crowd. She still didn't like the idea of death, particularly as she was an atheist, but could now distract herself for the most part.

• She always had a an interest in maths and how it applied to the real world, doing very well in it at school ad eventually accepted into a double degree in physics and maths. She played in a few Heavy Metal bands and stayed it while studying, a good long distance runner if nothing else. Helena took a few martial arts classes at her parents request when she moved out, finding she quite enjoyed the exercise if not the actual violence. Six months ago she completed her double degree with first class honours and found a job offer, potentially leading into a Ph.D scholarship, in America. She leaped at the opportunity, moving into a small and rather disheveled apartment near the university she would be working in, spending much of her time working on theoretical models for physics and chemistry calculations by the faculty.

• Helena discovered her powers, her inheritance from Hades, almost three months ago on the anniversary of her grandfather's death. She was thinking of him and how far she was from home while passing a local cemetery, suddenly she slipped through reality itself. She found herself in the ethereal realm of the Underworld, confronted with sudden knowledge of her distant ancestor and her grandfather's spirit standing before her.

• Mythological Ancestor: Hades (King of the Underworld - God of the Dead and Riches)

• Powers and Abilities: Can communicate with the spirits of the dead and they are inclined to do as she says (but can't directly influence the living world, mind). She can travel almost instantly between graves (formal or informal), final resting places or scenes of recent death through the underworld. Helena can sense any death or spirits within a few blocks and has an inexplicable understanding of how to traverse the afterlife. While in the underworld she occasionally finds a few coins of random currency (can be a few ancient Greek 'Obols' or more modern from the dead 'guests' there or 'thin' places in the world - usually between couch cushions). She can also allow others to she the dead or travel with her into the underworld so long as they maintain close contact.

• Other Skills: High intelligence, logic and computer programming skills. Bachelors (with Honours) in Applied Mathematics and Physics. Australian Drivers License (manual and automatic). Trained in self defense and a former cross country runner. Talented drummer and percussionist.

• Accessories: Wallet (contains ID, License, Bank Card and a little petty cash in various currencies). Three ancient greek Obols. Small, half rundown apartment housing - Laptop with sophisticated programming software and internet access to university supercomputer; many textbooks and notes; basic household goods; professional drumkit and high quality (but mis-matched and no doubt secondhand) sound equipment.

Ah yeah. I'll get to finishing my SU, but first, is this still taking place in America?

Hm. I wasn't too sure about him at first, but thinking about him more, I think he can work. The real problem is that Spring Heel Jack only made his debut a few centuries ago, long after most major religions were founded. However, he could still work within the line of reasoning that Jack actually went through an evolution of sorts, having existed for millennia as a slew of different beasties of legend and folklore before finally fading away after becoming his last form; Spring Heeled Jack. Which is essentially a rather roundabout way of saying 'accepted.'

You'll need to edit the format of your Sign-up sheet to match one we're currently using as you're finishing up there. Sorry about that.

Accepted. There's just one thing you need to touch up though. At the end of the biography, the last sentence ends with 'tries to avoid...' what, exactly? Conflict? That's probably it, but either way, I'd like you to just finish that last sentence up. Other than that, you're good to go.

I did ask in the other thread whether a Victorian era urban legend would be too recent. Starbound gave the OK for it though, so I was assuming it'd be the same in this thread.

Ok, changed the format. Sorry about that, just been a little busy (I'm at uni right now).

I'll finish up the biography and other sections soon-ish.

I'm writing up my character sheet for my descendant of Poseidon.

And here she is!

• Name: Maria Geriro
• Age: 18
• Gender: Female
• Appearance: A slender girl, she stands at 5'6'', thanks to being half American. She has light brown skin and is clear. She has black straight hair that reaches to between her shoulder blades.  Her eyes are amber and her face looks as if it's chiseled. She wears a simple green shirt, blue pants and white rubber shoes. She often wears a red hooded jacket because she's more used to tropical climates and doesn't really like the cold.
• Personality: She's a quiet but friendly girl, she doesn't really speak unless spoken to. She always tries to lend a hand, but this can sometimes be manipulated, which has happened before. So she's learned to know her limits and to be sure she's not being tricked. She doesn't really like using violence much, mostly because she's only recently managed to control her anger issues and would rather not revert back. She's fiercely protective of those she cares about though, which pushes the limits of what she can tolerate before she goes all berserk. She has a deep interest in mythology and video games and drawing things from the latter.
• Mythological Ancestor: Mars (Roman God of War and Agriculture; Guardian of Soldiers and Farmers)
• Powers and Abilities: Her strength is now much more than she's supposed to be able to and it'll get stronger as she exercises. Her body is now durable enough to let her do those feats of strength without hurting herself (and by extension, being able to take more hits than most people). Animals, mostly farm animals and anything closely related to the wolf, are more docile and safe in her presence. She gains natural proficiency with close ranged weapons but it needs training to be used well. This is the same for her gained proficiency in horse riding.
• Other Skills: She knows how to draw and can draw pretty well, as well as sketch. She tried painting once, but found she couldn't stand the paint. She can also speak in Cebuano.
• Accesories: A simple two story house where she lives with her father, a clamshell phone from her mother, a notebook, pencil and sharpener, a driver's license, but she doesn't have a car yet, and a worn out bike.
• Biography: Originally born in Cebu, Philippines, to an American father and Cebuano mother. She lived in a rural part of Cebu until she was nine, when they moved to America so she could get a better education there. Her mother, who was a police woman in the Philippines, became one in their new home. Maria grew up trying to keep her anger in check, which wasn't easy with all the kids at her school making fun of her trusting nature and she often ended up being an unwitting partner in various pranks. Thankfully, as time went on, she got better, made a few friends and being made fun of happened less often. Then, when she was fourteen, her mother died while chasing down a stolen vehicle, her patrol car crashing. She was devastated at her mother's death but her father managed to get her through it. She recently finished high school and was still deciding on where to go and what to do for college...until she just received her birthright.
• Other: If it isn't clear, she only just knew she's a descendant of Mars by the start of the RP.

Name (Last name, First name format): Ikazuchi Akio

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Appearance: Standing at 172cm, Akio has black hair, mildly tanned skin and blue eyes. Fairly attractive, typically wears jeans, t-shirt and trainers. He is in good physical shape and has put on a bit more muscle after obtaining his birthright due to him exercising more.

Personality: Quiet, friendly and possesses a generally positive attitude. Although hot tempered when pushed too far, he never holds a grudge. Akio is Asexual, and doesn't feel sexual attraction to males or females.

Mythological Ancestor: Raijin, Shinto god of lightning, thunder and storms

Powers and Abilities:

• Able to create storm clouds in a localized area, fire lightning bolts, and produce thunderclaps by channeling energy into his hands and striking something. Akio is also immune to electrocution, and can fly by generating a small storm cloud that he can stand on.

• Akio is also capable of summoning a Raiju (meaning Thunder Beast), which takes the form of a large hound made of lightning. Raiju can aid Akio in battle, but otherwise acts like a normal dog.

Other skills: Guitarist, fluent in English and Japanese, practiced Jujutsu from a young age. After discovering his birthright, Akio has started learning how to play the drums.

Assets: Laptop, smartphone, electric guitar and guitar case, headphones, wallet containing some money, 2 guitar picks and cards, keys.

Biography: Born and raised in Kyoto, Akio lived in Japan until his family moved to America when he was 10. For the most part, Akio's life was fairly normal: He got good grades and made a few friends, and picked up a hobby or two over the years. It wasn't until a little over a month ago that Akio discovered his birthright the morning after a thunderstorm, when he accidentally grabbed a sparking power line that had been severed without harm.

• Name: Gregorio Spigos
• Age: 20
• Gender: Male
• Appearance: Gregorio is tanned with short black hair and green eyes. He has a slim build and a youthful-looking, rounded face. He typically wears T-shirts, shorts, and sandals, not really liking to wear proper shoes or socks.
• Personality: Gregorio is a meek individual and he prefers to consider himself a pacifist. He does not like conflict and he would rather get out of a situation peacefully if possible. When the things he cares about are threatened, however, he can be fierce. He is also a bit of a neat freak. Gregorio is very much against being the legacy of Poseidon, and thus he does not like to use his powers.
• Mythological Ancestor: Poseidon
• Powers and Abilities:
  • Upon his awakening three days ago, Gregorio found that he can breathe underwater for a much longer period of time than normal. He's not willing to experiment due to the risk of drowning.
  • He can communicate with sea creatures (such as fish, crabs, dolphins, and the like) and horses.
  • In combat, Gregorio can summon and manipulate water and wind, which swirl around him in a maelstrom. However, the more he loses control of his emotions, the more he also loses control of this ability, and it can be dangerous if he panics.
• Other Skills: Gregorio is a budding artist; he has been taking classes at his local community college to study art for the past few years. He's also sometimes considered a bit of a teacher's pet because he usually does very well on his schoolwork.
• Accessories: Gregorio likes to carry a sketchpad and a pencil wherever he goes, to doodle. Also, he never leaves home without his wallet and his cell phone. Somehow (perhaps Poseidon's magic?) he can keep his belongings dry even underwater.
• Biography: Gregorio's parents were from Greece, and his mother moved to the United States to raise her children. Gregorio and his younger sister Suzie were raised near Pompano Beach, Florida. It's mostly fine, but you'll need to get get rid of the parts involving the mermaid and other sea creatures. At this point, no mermaids or any other sea creatures exist. When the Gods faded away, so did all of the mythical races and creatures with them. For now, they simply no longer exist. As for how your character learns of his inheritance, just have it come to him like the rest of the cast. Once you get that settled, you'll be in.

All right, I didn't know that; thanks for clearing it up. I'll edit it. Though, by "sea creatures" I meant mundane "Earthly" sea creatures like fish.
