A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Asking with mod hat on...
This thread was originally created to discuss film, and is part of the Live Action Film subforum.
However, recent posts have mostly focused on threatre (Romeo & Juliet) and other types of media.
Is there a wish to formally include them in thread scope? Or should it remain focused on film, with other media off-topic?
If there's a consensus one way or the other, we can update the pinned post to confirm.
(Updated to acknowledge that we already have a pinned post)

I thought this was moved to On Topic Conversations but I am glad to find out it wasnt. We just need gentle reminders that this is a Film topic, be it Mods or concerned regular posters.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here. This thread seems to have covered all media for quite a while. There as a previous mod post asking if it should be moved to off topic a while back but most people at the time felt the culture(?) was better here iirc.
I dont think it covers all media, I think people were talking about movies but rather what sorts of stories can be told or should/ shouldnt be in a movie. Like yes, at the moment it was solely about theatre but before then it was asking the question that a Romeo And Juliet story with a power imbalance could be done right on filmm.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Per the title and other discussions I'm of the opinion that it shouldn't be confined to the medium of cinema. But at the same time it is a bit if an odd duck in the Film board being OTC adjacent. And that there are other OTC adjacent threads in other boards that adhered to it's scope (iirc one of them being a sexism in anime one)
I again express my preference about it being about media in general. But i understand if you want to limit it to film.
Keep it broad. That way, we can cross-reference different ways to handle certain topics. As we've done for years now.
Also, I think we should've moved this to On-Topic to begin with because the thread obviously evolved beyond the scope of just film.
Yeah, color me surprised that mods are even asking this question. I had thought that the thread was retitled specifically to be more inclusive of other media, and that it was "Diversity and Representation in Film" for a while, I know that discussions on the scope of this thread have occurred in the past (and related discussions on moving it).
This theater tangent isn't particularly unusual, given that I'd wager a decent portion of the discussion overall is about television shows on any given week, you know?
I maintain that moving this to OTC would needlessly limit the reach of the thread.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.To be clear (mod hat off) - I'm only asking so that (this time) we can write it up clearly in the pinned post and we know it's backed by a consensus.
No preference for any particular decision, just after opinions.
I agree that it makes sense for this thread to cover all forms of media, regardless of whether it should remain in the film forum or not.
SoundCloudI think that since the title is diversity and representation in media, then restricting the discussion to live-action film feels unnecessary.
"Enshittification truly is how platforms die"-Cory DoctorowYeah, keep it related to media in general. If that necessitates a move to OTC, so be it. I do remember a year or so ago when the name was changed by mods then, it was with the understanding the thread's purpose expanded to that despite its location.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.Just to add -
My take would be that the thread has also moved far beyond the 'misdoings' of the pinned post to cover wider discussions, so that should change too?
Yeah, this covers the good, bad and mixed representation in Media (which is better in my opinion), not just the bad representation in films.
(Putting mod hat on again for a second)
Ok, we'll give it a day or two to see if there's a significant number of people with different ideas. If not, we'll update the pinned post.

To try and bring this back to movies, (I dont like dwelling on On Topic Conversations.) This Accented Cinema Video about a Nezha movie reimagining the myth to be Urban Fantasy east punk as WHY it worked so well, despite seeming like a terrible idea on paper.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I've been in favor of moving this thread to OTC for quite a while as it went beyond the scope of Diversity in Film to media in general.
Watch SymphogearTBH, conversation in here does often feel like conversation in some of the OTC threads, particularly the Politics in Media thread. It can get pretty passionate in here.
SoundCloudThe only reason the thread was kept in the Film forum last time was tradition. I'm happy to keep it here as long as the scope remains multimedia, but in strictly categorical terms it's misplaced. (It's a bigger problem to me that OTC is considered the only forum where these conversations "belong").

The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableI thought the only reason this survived the first page was under the idea of curating against other attempts at such a page popping up in the media threads by allowing just one for everything. That was forever ago in terms of wiki moderation and policy, though, and it was always better suited for OTC.
Do you not know that in the service one must always choose the lesser of two weevils!TBH, I’d rather it stay here, I’ve got some specific reasons I’d rather not elaborate on at the moment.
DM me if you’re curious
Not Three Laws compliant.I'm fine with keeping this thread here and focusing on multimedia.
I'm fine with keeping this thread here.
It makes sense to keep it here, but I think the best route (which would be a lot more work) would be to make a whole new forum type in Media for Multimedia. That would also make sense to put all the "General" and "Franchise" forum threads.

in theory yeah but in pratice most people kinda want a general diversity and representation in media rather than jump to other threads.
I think it should belong to OTC

Wasn't there an Italian-American who worked on the show named Giovanni Bravo? I kind of assumed they named the character after him.
