Now that the anime is complete, Mark is covering it. Spoilers he loves it thus far, him covering season one in the first video.

Here's his videos on seasons 2 and 3.

His talk about Reigen in the final episode and the use of the song 99 really hit me hard.

If there's any justice in the world, Mob Psycho 100 deserves to go down in history as a Must-Watch Anime alongside shows like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Death Note.

[up] I’d say Mob Psycho 100 is the most “must-watch” material out of those three.

So..for the past few months, I've been on a Best Anime 2022 binge. My previous one was anime of Call of the Night and currently watching Spy X Family anime.

Once I'm done with that, I'm thinking of watching Mob Psycho 100 anime...but I am wondering: Should I read the original manga by ONE?

I did hear that the anime is such a perfect adaptation that reading manga isn't even necessary, and the first few volumes (about 5, probably?) didn't impress me too much.

This is probably one of the singular media works where I can say that reading the manga isn't necessary. That's not to say that there's things that the manga doesn't do better (at least subjectively); but the anime is not going to veer off or mislead in terms of the content. It's a faithful, incredibly well executed adaptation that was done by people that very obviously cared deeply about the source material.

You can definitely watch the anime instead of reading the manga. The only arc that actually had anything major cut out was the Mogami arc, so that's one you might want to revisit in the manga, but even that's still optional.

Honestly, while the anime is a great adaptation, I personally wouldn't say it completely replaces the manga. Even in season 1, they really sped through some parts of the manga and didn't give them the same amount of time or depth that the manga did. The one that stands out to me the most is Ritsu's arc— The first time I watched the anime I had a hard time understanding why he felt the way he did, but when I read the manga it made a lot more sense to me. There's other small things too, and the Mogami arc is also pretty famous for being really rushed in the anime. So I guess for me at least, it's complicated and I think if you really enjoy the anime for mob psycho, it's worth checking out the Manga.

It's also true that, for me at least, the final arc played out with enough differences between the manga and the anime in terms of when certain facts are revealed to the audience that it's worth looking at both. I can't even say which is preferable though because they're both very good. It's just that one version chooses to play something closer to the chest than the other does.

All right, so how many volumes does the first season cover?

Roughly five and a half. It covers things until about chapter 49~50, which is the middle of volume six. Second season covers from there until volume 12, which is up to roughly chapter 90. Then the remaining volumes are covered in season three.

He made a bunch of multi-part chapters since he wanted to end on chapter 101. The entirety of the final arc is in the super-long chapter 100.

Well, goddamn.

I re-read the first volume and I thought, meh, this isn't worth repeating and I'm just gonna watch the anime.

...only to find myself already reading up to volume 5 of the manga. I gotta hand it to ONE in that regards. [lol]

Welp, once I'm done with the Part 2 of Spy X Family season 1 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, I will most likely start with Mob Psycho anime season 1.

Okay, you know what?

Just recently finished vol.7 and figured that I might as well as read all 16 volumes before watching the anime. [lol]

Also, Reigen might as well be one of the best characters ONE ever created. [lol][lol]

Sorry to triple post, but I think it's relevant enough to warrant it.

Over the few weeks I actually ended up reading the whole manga. While the final confrontation with...what was his name, the Daddy Boss was really awesome, the whole brocolli and Ekubo final boss arc felt like an Ending Fatigue.

Still, it was an incredibly well-written manga over all. It's a testament of ONE's skill as a mangaka. And, well, I have things I want to say about One Punch Man, but that's not for this thread.

Now with the manga done, I started to watch the anime and currently on ep 3. And WOW, the anime is every bit as amazing as people say.

Gigguk actually ranked the anime's third and the final season among the best of anime 2022. And I can't wait to get to there!

I am so sorry for not only the triple but quadruple posting...but I finally finished the entire anime.

What. An absolute beautiful anime and journey.

While obviously season 2 was the climactic big battle, season 3 truly wrapped up the emotional climax of all the main characters. Even if the anime stopped at season 2 it would have been still great. But the final season elevated the entire anime to a level of modern classic.

The last time I experienced this kind of strong, conclusive emotion was Cyberpunk: Edgerunners...in different directions, obviously, but still.

I wouldn't have said this few years ago, no, few months ago, but now I can say this fairly confidently:

Mob Psycho 100 may not have reached the peak popularity of One Punch Man, but now it proved itself to be a much superior work.

I give the anime four stars out of four. Goodbye Mob, and thank you for the journey.

I think that there's a lot to be said about the sentiment behind each work. It's important to remember that ONE wrote and drew One-Punch Man primarily as a joke webcomic; one that turned into an unfathomably popular phenomenon that attracted the attention of Yusuke Murata. This isn't to say that OPM isn't good, but it's something that may have lacked initial direction beyond "it's funny that this guy is too strong". Hell, I think according to ONE himself it was intended as a one-and-done thing, but he continued it after it got a good reception.

Mob Psycho on the other hand, most definitely had a thesis from the beginning, one that I'd argue is "the journey to accept yourself". It's written with much more intentionality than OPM is, which to me at least seems much more listless.

While One-Punch Man will likely be the thing that ONE is best known for, I think that Mob Psycho 100 is his current opus, and may very well end up as his magnum opus.

Reigen's Eng dub is AMAZING. Like, I think I actually prefer this over the original sub!

Still not getting over the sheer emotional experience of finishing this series:

This, along with several other wholesome works...actually had a positive impact in my life, in that a lot of them is about accepting one's personal flaws but improving oneself and moving forward regardless.

I'm a professional writer myself, as I described in my sig, and MP 100 really think about my story and what kind of endings I want to write.

This is one of the extremely few works that had such an impact on me that it will undoubtedly influence my writing in the future as well. waii

How I sum up Mob Psycho 100

Some Jackass: "With our psychic powers we are gods!"
Mob: "Can you tie your shoes by yourself?"
Jackass: -Crying- "O-of course I can!"
Narrator: "He could in fact... not tie his shoes."

I also drew it as a comic.
