Yeah, this is pretty much an Avengers vs Age of Ultron situations. There are Box office results which are nearly impossible to top. I don't expect the next Jurassic World coming even close to the last one either. Nor do I expect the Avatar sequel making Avatar numbers.
I expect Infinity war to top Age of Ultron at least, though. There is so much built-up to that movie.
Not to mention Force Awakens had stronger competition than Last Jedi opening weekend. But its vast success should be sealed.
Justice League continues on its downward trajectory with a weekend-to-weekend slump of 56.9%.

At the moment, it's only the fifth placed entry in the DCEU at the domestic box office. Yeah. That means it's currently being battered by both Bv S and Man of Steel.
At this point it's definitely looking like Justice League will end up the lowest grossing DCEU film at the domestic market, but it might squeak ahead of Man of Steel for worldwide gross.

I think Infinity War might get up pretty close to (if not outright surpassing) the Avengers' numbers in a way that AOU couldn't, largely because IW will be closer to the Avengers in terms of similarity, aka being a "new team-up" movie.
The Avengers was the first time that we had all of these MCU characters working together and IW will be the first time for Spider-man, Black Panther (and possibly Dr. Strange and the GOTG) all coming together in the same movie and people will be coming just from the sheer spectacle of that.
In addition, IW is coming in with the opposite of Justice Leagues' problem: This movie is going to be coming out after a series of regular hits (SM Homecoming) and "surprisingly good" (Thor Ragnarok) movies, not to mention Black Panther which mirrors the DCEU's Wonder Woman (in that it'll be the franchise's first minority led movie starring a secondary character that stole the fucking show).
Plus, as directors, the Russos have a pretty solid reputation as compared to Snyder/Whedon who have their share of fans but just as many detractors because the niche or ...fetishy aspects of their works.
"Yo, those kids are straight up liars, man. All I told them to do was run product. And by product, I mean chewing gum."Sure. Honestly, I am actually pretty sure that it will surpass The Avengers. But I am careful with my predictions for now because for one, the most important element of the movie, its quality, hasn't been revealed yet and two, they might mess up the marketing campaign. I doubt that they will, but they might.
I don't expect it to pass the Avengers, over be even close. Avengers was the first real superhero team-up movie that worked, and it got people very excited. (Also, basically the whole fandom loved Whedon then, and he had a large pre-existing fanbase from Buffy, Firefly etc; it's only after Age of Ultron that more people started to sour on him.). Infinity War is just more of the same, but ramped up by adding additional characters.
We've already seen many of these characters (including Spider-Man and Black Panther) together in a movie in Civil War, which did well but didn't put up the numbers you'd expect from a movie with so many individually-popular characters. I'd expect Infinity War, if it's good, to have moderately higher numbers than Civil War - somewhere in the mid-400 mil.
An ensemble superhero-cinematic-universe movie just isn't the novelty it was when Avengers was released.

Sure, but the fandom has grown since then. I for example did not see The Avengers in Theatres, but I will be there on opening day for Infinity War. And there are people who are really into the Got G which will see this one. Unlike Age of Ultron, which showed the team up we already knew again plus two new characters, Infinity war will add the Got G and Doctor Strange into the mix, all characters we haven't really seen interacting with the main team before.
Yes, but Civil War also added two new characters interacting with the team (Spider-Man and Black Panther), with the former being one of the most popular comic characters ever and the latter being one of peoples' favourite things about the movie. And it still only made about 400 mil. I don't think throwing in Strange (whose movie was mediocre) and the Guardians is going to make that much of a difference.
Also, to those who aren't comic fans and thus aren't already invested him...Thanos kind of looks dumb.

Emphasis on "new characters". Those weren't characters which had been introduced before in another movie/franchise.
Also, Infinity War and its sequel are sold as the big finale of the story. It's the Harry Potter effect. Nobody will want to miss this.
Er, everyone knows who Spidey is, and the excitement was precisely because he hadn't appeared in the MCU before. Adding him was a much bigger move than adding the Guardians.

But the people who care about spider-man are roughly the same people who care about comic books anyway. Got G reached people who usually don't. Also, putting Spider-man in the movie was largely done so that the character got traction again after the previous movies had tarnished the brand.
No way. Spider-man, like Batman, is a character whose popularity extends far beyond the comic-reading audience.
Definitely true... but that said, Spider-Man at the time was almost a tainted brand. After three movies whose reception varied between "garbage," "underwhelming," and "unnecessary," he wasn't inherently the huge draw that he was in, say, 2005.

That doesn't necessarily mean that his fans would go out and support a movie with him if they don't like what they see. Not to mention that you need to get to the general audience to get to the billions. And they don't care about characters they haven't seen before.

I don't think anyone was expecting it to come anywhere close to matching TFA, that film had too much going for it that the sequel didn't have a chance to replicate. It's still going to do absurdly well, but it won't have the same legs.
