I suppose this thread is about married characters/characters with marriages who are not involved in fridge stuffing in any way. I just wanna point out that trope. :)

Agarest Senki has marriage and generations worth of children and spouses. They all are party members at some points and kick ass all the time.

To expand on Dragon Quest V's marriage, the hero marries at some point and you get to choose whom he marries (out of 2 choices and the DS remake adds one more option). He has kids but they are never in distress at any point, it's the hero who gets into various states of peril (at least thrice, I believe), and the only time the wife gets into real distress, the hero was in the same boat as her.

In the end the hero, wife and 2 kids are all party members.

Happily Married

Ta-da.

Notable examples this thread has missed: John Marston, Guybrush Threepwood (as of the third game), and a bunch of Fire Emblem characters.

Ah. Well, this is what happens when there aren't line breaks in a post. tongue

Either way, nobody mentioned Guybrush.

Wait. Nobody mentions Barry Burton? Well, technically he's a supporting character, but still....

Actually, some Military FPS (COD and Expies) characters actually characterized as fathers that grown in the long line of soldiering, so there's that.

And of course, it is almost imperative in classic JRPG that you should have an older presence in the group, who can be a Happily Married folks, but also often could be Crusading Widower.

Alan Wake is happily married in his series. His wife is used as the main motivation for the game, but they do get some decent relationship exploration and there's set up for that to be explored in future games (if they ever happen).

Matt Horner in Starcraft 2 is married, though he tries to avoid his wife. He won his marriage in a poker game.

Henpecked Hou from Jade Empire is married (hence the name). Not happily married (again, look at the name) as the epilogue implies he tried to murder her (only to poison himself).

Carth Onassi from KOTOR is a widower.

Not strictly protagonists, I know.

Edward Kenway In Assassin's Creed Black Flag is married, and trying to become rich to show up his wife's family is his reason for becoming a privateer. His wife dies and he re-marries at the end of the game.

If we count "Married between installments" both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze qualify in their later appearances - though Ezio is only married in his appearance in the film that covers his death. Altair is married during the flashbacks of Revelations

Michael Townley from GTA 5 is married. It ain't a happy marriage and it nearly breaks up at one point, but he is married, and has two teenage kids.

Oh! Nathan Drake! He and Elena get married and separate between Uncharted 2 and 3, but they're back together by the end of 3, and he's still wearing the ring in all the stuff we've seen of 4.

Hmm... how about a ruling on Edea from Final Fantasy VIII? She is married to Cid the whole game, and she does briefly join your party. That said, she's only a Guest-Star Party Member, and she does start the game as an antagonist (her Heel–Face Turn is permanent once it happens, though).

Also from the Street Fighter series, Hakan is married with a host of kids that thankfully all get their looks from their mother. Similarly, Guy, as of Street Fighter IV, is engaged, so he's about to be married.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

What's weird about the FO 4 survivor is that the spouse's death seems to be forgotten fairly quickly. I clicked on one of the romance options for Piper just to see what would happen, and while they both sound a little uncertain about it, the fact that he's probably still grieving his wife's death doesn't come up.

I'm trying to think of other games that haven't been mentioned her and I'm mostly coming up blank. I *think* I've heard that a female Gray Warden in Dragon Age: Origins can end up marrying Alistair, but I'm not certain about that. Lee Everett in The Walking Dead: Season 1 apparently *was* married, though it's probably safe to assume they are divorced or separated given what we find out about the relationship's history.

Wasn't Cid married in FFVII?

Not the original game, no. He doesn't get married before the events of Dirge of Cerberus.

It's worth noting that, in a modern WRPG, a protagonist who starts the game married is seriously, seriously unusual - in part because the expectation is that the MC will be able to be a stand-in for the player in a way that you don't expect from a JRPG, and because since 2000, there's a growing movement in games with romances to allow gay characters. Fallout 4 breaks this rule, of course, but even then it doesn't really say anything about your relationship with your spouse - the important relationship (SPOILERS ARE COMING) is between you and your son. Whether that was well or poorly handled is for another thread, but it clearly doesn't get in the way of banging Preston or Curie or both (as you prefer).
