This is something that has been on my mind for a while, even since in 2014 I began reading most recent discussion page posts: Finding a way to connect wiki discussion pages with forum posts by attaching forum thread links at their top, so that people posting forum-like questions can find their way there.

(Note: While this concept could theoretically be implemented in the current wiki software with some modification, for practical reasons it's more a TV Tropes 2.0 thing. That thread discusses "elements/pageoids", which are page components. Some of these already exist now as subpages.)

Per page thread links.

For work and trope pages, one could hook up a thread connection on the discussion pages for each element associated with a given trope/work which propagates over all elements associated with that given trope/work. For works, for example, there would be a createthread button that creates a thread in the appropriate Media forum and automatically replaces the createthread button in the discussion page with a work thread link.

Implications:

  • The software will need to know about which media forum the thread has to be created in. Today this could be done with namespaces, in 2.0 with the tags that will replace namespaces.
  • There has to be a way to associated/disassociate threads with a discussion page, so that locked threads can be disassociated and pre-existent threads associated. As well as linking one page to more than one thread or one thread to more than one page.
  • This concept for works and Media forums could also be extended to Trope Talk and tropes, Image Pickin', Projects and Trope Repair Shop in general. More exotically, other forums could be associated with certain pages.
  • Depending on usage and in combination with the per element, this may result in the deprecation of the current discussion page system.

Open issues:

  • Associating pre-existent forum threads with wiki pages will take a lot of work.
  • Under certain circumstances, it may be opportune to display a whole forum thread in the discussion page.
  • Since tropers making threads through these buttons are not seeing the forum and any stickied threads, there needs to be a way to make non-hardcoded messages on the createthread buttons linked this way.
  • Whether an existing thread link should drop the troper at the thread start or on the last post. I'd imagine that it might depend on which forum the thread is in.

Per element thread links

This one is about by default linking to a given thread from discussion pages of certain elements. For example, discussion pages of quotes would by default link to the quotes thread. This would require a tool to associate elements (by type or by tag) with certain discussion threads.
