Was reading the Handling Spoilers page, and something's been bugging me.

How are we supposed to do this? It says not to have short phrases hidden, so is something like this not allowed? (example grabbed from Kingdom Hearts II)

  • Sora doesn't retain any of Roxas' memories, yet feels like he has met Hayner, Pence and Olette before when he wakes up.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but the wording is confusing me on top of lacking examples of "good" spoiler writing. I'm not sure how we're supposed to be doing this and what to do about entries where everything but the trope name is hidden.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?

The example you posted above is acceptable within the intent of the policy, but tagging the word "memories" is problematic because the example doesn't make sense without it. Slightly better is to tag only the character's name. Ideal is to avoid using the character's name in the sentence entirely.

Writing around spoilers is something of an art, but using that example, it could be written: "Sora doesn't retain any of the stolen memories, [...]". This avoids the need for tags at all. Bear in mind that I don't know the work so I can't vouch for the accuracy of my revision.

The memories aren't stolen (tl;dr version is that they're technically the same person, it's complicated) and the name is needed for some context. Compounding the issue here is that the work in question has First Episode Spoilers concerning the prologue's content.

Which reminds me, what about examples that are whited out except for the trope name? Example:

  • First-Episode Spoiler: The game's long prologue as a couple of surprise twists at the end. Roxas is Sora's Nobody that's needed to wake the latter up, and the Twilight Town that Roxas lives in was actually a simulation created to hold him while NaminĂ© was fixing Sora's memories.

If the entire body of trope examples depends on people not knowing a First-Episode Spoiler, then I'd say to forget the whole thing and declare the work "Spoilers Off". Just put a big warning in the header and get rid of all the tags.

Did that. Do I need to add it to some sort of index, too?

Also, what about occasional white-outs (bar Trope names) on pages without many spoilers? Are those ever allowed?

Those are usually fine. The point of the spoiler policy (well, one point) is to keep articles from looking like Swiss cheese, or like they were attacked by a crack-addled redacter.
