Pokemon: Johto Journey Roleplay

Hi there! I'm Professor Elm. I'm a Pokemon Professor from the Johto Region. Welcome to the world of Pokemon! As a trainer, your job is to capture Pokemon, learn from them, and participate in battles! You could become the leader of the Pokemon league, or a top coordinator, or even a professor like me! If this sounds good, you'll have to read a few rules.

    Rules
  • No god-modding or auto-hitting. If your character just got out of New Bark, they're not gonna be taking on an entire squad of Team Rocket grunts on their own.
  • Try to keep things around the PG-13 mark. Swearing is okay, but no excessive blood or gore, and no hanky-panky onscreen. If it would fly on an episode of The Simpsons, it should be okay here.
  • This RP takes place in an AU. That means that, should you feel so inclined, you're more than welcome to play a canon character, such as Brock or Silver. I may ask you a few questions to nail down exactly how this changes the game world, and you will have to adjust their power level to keep them on par with the other players, but I'm more than happy to oblige.
  • If you want to fight a gym leader, you can either write out the battle yourself, or ask me or another player to control them for you.
  • If you read this, put the word "Stonehenge" in the "Other" section of your SU. Kudos!

If all this sounds good to you, just fill out this trainer card and you can start your Pokemon Journey. Fill it out in-character or out-of-character, whichever you prefer.

    Sign-Up Form
Name: Everyone has a name! That said, if you want to put some crazy made-up name on your card, that's okay too.

Class: What role do you think you fill in society? Bug catcher? Hiker? Ace trainer?

Gender: The Johto League accepts all: Male, female, and anything in between.

Age: Most Pokemon trainers start at around age 10. But any time is a good time to start your Pokemon Journey!

Appearance: What do you look like? Feel free to provide a picture, or a written description of whatever length you feel comfortable with. Or both! If you want to provide a picture, this site has great customization options.

Personality: What are you like? As above, provide a written description of any length you deem appropriate.

History: How's life been treating you so far?

Starter: What Pokemon would you like to request from the Johto Pokemon League? The League stocks most first-stage non-legendary Pokemon. Or you can leave this section blank, and I'll choose one for you.

Other: Any additional notes you want to add?

C/P Ready Variant:

If you need help, you can use this form another trainer filled out as an example.

    Example SU
Name: Christopher Lesath

Class: Gourmand

Age: 10

Gender: Boy

Appearance: Reflecting his laid-back nature, Chris has a somewhat unkempt appearance. His black hair is always somewhat tousled, and he tends to wear loose, comfortable clothes. He's a bit on the tall side, but despite his hobby as a gourmand, he's fairly lean. He has a smattering of freckles across his face, and is rarely seen without his favorite straw hat.

Personality: Christopher is a very laid-back person. He can work hard, if he's very passionate about something, but that's rare. He really likes Pokemon, and feels like they can sometimes be better friends than humans. He's a gourmand, and enjoys trying new foods. His favorite food is hot dogs. He also has a penchant for alliteration.

History: Chris is the youngest of several siblings. His parents are both great chefs, and that gave him a deep appreciation for food. He became a Pokemon trainer because it would give him an excuse to hang out with his Munchlax, and let him travel the world and sample all kinds of new foods. His first stop is going to be Stonehenge.

Starter: Max, a Munchlax

Other: Stonehenge

I have some interest. I'll be able to fill out most of the form, but I'll need to skip on appearance until I can get an image from a computer.

Funnily enough, Gold was my first Pokémon game.

Name: Damien Pierson

Class: Fire Breather, though he's not afraid to use other Pokémon types

Gender: Male

Age: 11, though he's going on 12

Appearance: Here

Personality: Hot blooded. Driven. And stubborn to a fault. All these words would apply Damien. But he's also one of the friendliest people you'll ever meet, and one of the most loyal too. He likes to show off though, and has no real grasp of tactics or type disadvantages. He knows about them, of course, but he'll prefer to just power through them, and train even harder if that fails. He'll never ever try and overwork a Pokémon though, showing he truly does care about them.

He'll always go for attack moves, not caring for others like Leer or Smokescreen, for example. An avid fan of Fire types, he's an all out blitzer.

History: Since he was young, Damien grew up with a fascination for Fire -type Pokémon. He would often beg and plead to get one for himself to keep at home, but to no avail. However, he was also driven to become one of the best trainers like the ones he saw on TV. Of course, being him, he only wanted to do it for the fame and the glory. Still, he's aiming to become a master trainer. And so, he signed up to tour Johto and battle the Gyms to get into the League.

Starter: A female Cyndaquil, which he will affectionately and unoriginally call Cynder.

Other: Stonehenge Like this.]]

Name: Lina Hines

Class: Lass (Aspires to be an Ace Trainer or Champion)

Gender: Female

Age: 14

Appearance: Lina values comfort over style, so you'll rarely see her in any dresses or high heels. Her typical outfit consists of blue jeans, black sneakers, any kind of t-shirt, and a black jacket. Her long cherry-red hair is kept up in twintails, usually decorated with black ribbons. She's rather short in stature, and hopes she'll grow taller, but doesn't mind her height too much. Her eyes are citrine orange, which she thinks is neat, even though it conflicts with her preferred colors of clothing.

Personality: Extremely confident, determined, proud, optimistic, though a little quiet at times, Lina's goal to become the strongest trainer in Johto gives her the drive to push through almost any obstacle in her way. Her tendencies to think up of complex fantasies and plans interfere with her real life success, and she often thinks too far ahead for any preparations to be useful, but she means well and can still hold her own in a fight. Lina adores the "cooler" Pokemon types and is prone to forgetting that her Pokemons' feelings matter just as much as hers. Traveling alone could be a bit dangerous, and she doesn't take it well when she's ignored or rejected. Since she lacks any real social skills despite her friendly personality, so actually making friends can be difficult for her. That doesn't mean she won't try, though.

History: Lina grew up as an only child, living in Goldenrod with her mother and father. Up until the point where she left to become a trainer, she had lived a very plush, if not lonely life. Her parents worked in Silph Co. so they were rarely around, and while there were children around her age to befriend, her energetic and awkward personality made it hard to hang out with any of them without becoming a bit too bossy to play with. As a result, she mostly kept to herself, and would read stories about legendary trainers and Pokemon. And after a while of learning about how cool and strong they were, she decided that she wanted to become a Pokemon trainer. So, after gaining her parents' permission, Lina signed up and left for her journey.

Starter: A male Trapinch, which she will name Lion.

Other: Stonehenge.

(I'm not the best at writing out character info. I can roleplay just fine, though my posts are never too eloquent, but listing info gets me so scrambled up. I guess practicing would be smart... Mm, whatever. Is this fine? I've never really joined an RP here before, so I'd like to know if it's all good)

Undying Phoenix, it may be a WIP, but it looks fine so far, and appearance ain't all that important.

If you want a pic, here, I made one you can use if you like.

And Magical Girl, your SU is a-okay! Since I made UP a pic, I guess it would only be fair if I made one for you too!

Name: Camryn Yarrow.

Class: Roughneck.

Gender: Female.

Age: 15.

Appearance: Camryn is rather tall for a girl, standing at 5' 11". She has brown skin, almond-shaped eyes, and a pair of glasses with thin lenses that give her a sarcastic, almost bored look. Her straight black hair reaches down to her mid-back, and looks very well-taken care of. She is usually seen wearing the same few well-worn (though clean) shirts and jeans.

Personality: Loud, boisterous, foul-mouthed and occasionally rude, Camryn is rather hard to get along with if you can't handle a lot of yelling and/or cursing. However, underneath the hard exterior is a girl who tries her best to be nice to people and to be friends with everyone she can. However, if you get on her nerves, she won't hesitate to let you know. (She still will try and let you down gently, though.) She also has a taste for history, especially of the ancient variety, and is skilled with languages; she knows the language of the Dewford natives well, thanks to her parents, and knows bits and pieces of many other languages as well (mostly curse words).

History: Camryn was born on Dewford Island, Hoenn, to a pair of parents who, after a few years of living in poverty, put her up for adoption in hopes that someone more capable of taking care of her would do so. The orphanage she was placed at wasn't a bad place, per se; the workers were nice, the food was healthy, the education was good, and the living conditions were comfortable. The other kids there, though, were awful; the custodians, while kind, were very hands-off, and the place soon became similar to Lord Of The Flies, but more structured. Camryn had to be sharp to survive, and sharp she was. Until, at least, Camryn was adopted by a rich Johtoan family from Ecruteak who thought it'd be novel to have a foreign kid. After being bragged about and paraded in front of a bunch of snobbish old people, Camryn left in the middle of the night with as much money as she could carry (~3500 ₱) for New Bark Town, so that she could embark on the trainer's journey like she'd always wanted.

Starter: A Golett, who she'll name Mummu.

Other: Is a lesbian (nothing'll really come of it, just something I thought of last minute and went "hey, why not"). Stonehenge.

Savato from Dusk 'till Dawn Since: Jan, 2012 Relationship Status: Singularity
#13: Dec 15th 2015 at 3:56:51 AM

  • Name: Dr. Vladimir Taylor
  • Class: Ruin Maniac
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 35
  • Appearance:
    • Hair Color & Style: Black, straight hair, geled back. Shoulder length at the back of the head, short in front. Goatee and mustache.
    • Eyes: Dark brown, piercing eyes that seem to reflect an inner seriousness and focus. Thick, straight eyebrows narrow the eye and seem to give it a perpetually annoyed expression.
    • Clothing/Accessories: Vladimir prefers to wear a battered and well-worn leather trenchcoat, a leather vest and a white shirt with a black tie underneath. His brown pants lead to equally brown leather shoes and around his neck a bronze necklace holding an oval rock crystal dangles. As he got frustrated buying clothes, he once found one set of fitting clothes and has been buying the exact same clothing ever since. Thus all his clothes look exactly alike.
    • General Appearance: The Doctor is a tall, haggard man whose face is almost continuously adorned with a grim scowl. His skin is tan and leathery due to the long time he has spent wandering the countryside under scorching sun and grueling sandstorms. His face is long and thin with pronounced cheekbones. His thin lips are barely visible behind his neatly trimmed facial hair. His thin frame is most noticeable in his bony hands. But despite his not very muscular body, his posture is very upright in an almost stiff manner and his gait is precise and controlled.
To those meeting him for the first time he tends to give the impression of a stern, practical and ruthless man, not entirely unlike those hardboiled detectives in fiction.
  • Personality: Dr. Taylor is a stern, serious personality who rarely seems to tolerate mistakes - both his own and those of others.
But while this may make him appear to others as cold and unfriendly, the truth is far from it. Vladimir is a perfectionist with a deep-seated fear of failure, left there from his parents' strict education, which he unknowingly projects on those around him as well. This leads to a tendency to try and improve those who have no wish to do so, which in turn causes for him to have trouble making friends, undermining his social confidence. Vladimir does not feel at ease in social situations as his perfectionism causes him to write off any social action, that doesn't directly lead to the other person immediately becoming his best friend as a failure. His fear of failure then scares him from keeping on trying, leaving him with no chance to practice his social skills. Unfortunately this only leads to him acting even more stiff and unnatural in conversations, further reinforcing this problem.

If however Vlad starts recieving positive results in conversation, his fear of failure sets out, letting him start to feel more comfortable around this person and allowing him to actually loosen up and crack jokes in their presence. The doctor's sense of humour is a dry and sarcastic one that can even veer off into black humour for those he knows won't be offended. It is likely that his sense of humour became as dark as it is now because of his profession. Having studied the atrocities committed throughout history for such a long time, one invariably develops some sort of coping mechanism - in Vladimir's case that would be laughing about them.

But despite - or maybe even because of - his lack of social skills, Dr. Vladimir possesses a kind heart. Perhaps it developed because he wanted to distance himself from his parents, maybe it grew out of his desire for friendship or maybe to make a point that humanity isn't as bad as the history books make it out to be. Due to his strong moral convictions he refuses to take the freedom of a Pokémon against its will, only catching those who willingly join him or those whose physical wellbeing would be in peril otherwise. It is possible that he feels this way because he believes that his own freedom had been taken away by his parents and he doesn't want to subject anyone else to the same thing.

For similar reasons he is a functional vegetarian, only eating sythetically produced meat as well as vegetables that did nor originate from Pokémon, not wishing to do harm to anyone. This also has its roots in Vlad's younger years. As he never really had any human friends, Pokémon were the closest thing he had to someone he cared about, which has made him think of Pokémon as essentially humans with a different language and appearance.

In combat Vladimir prides himself on keeping his calm, battling with brains instead of brawn, most likely inspired by the military strategies he has been studying. Nevertheless he cares deeply about his Pokémon, preferring to surrender instead of pushing his Pokémon's limits and risking injury. In this he seems to be deliberately defying his parents, putting friendship before profit and not the other way around. This protectiveness is rooted in the doctor's own loneliness, as he has trouble making friends, his Pokémon often being his only companion. Usually the doctor prefers the more cautious approach to a problem, believing that acting too rashly and without thinking could cause unneccessary complications and might lead to causing unneccessary harm. This world was controlled from the shadows after all - both history and his parents taught him that - and while Vladimir definitely didn't want to join his family's ranks, he couldn't deny they had a point.

If however he has set his mind to something, Vladimir can become frighteningly determined in pursuing this one goal, stubbornly refusing to pay attention to anything else until this goal has been reached. Occassionally this even includes neglecting to eat or sleep. While he does not like to admit it, Vlad is also rather curious, insisting on investigating everything to the fullest. He is the kind of person to check whether the paint under the "wet paint" sign actually is wet and has a hard time resisting those big, red buttons. Even though this might be an useful trait for someone in his profession to have, he himself would rather have more self-control, fearing to one day endanger someone he cares about.

Playing the piano is one of the few things Vladimir's parents made him do that he actually developed a passion for, possibly because it distracted him from the far more boring things he had to do, such as reading about politics and the economy. But perhaps the most striking passion of his is collecting things. Ever since he was a child, Vladimir had shown a strong interest in his family's collections of heirlooms and books, and this interest was the one that sparked his passion in archaeology as well. But as he'd prefer to distance himself from his family and their ways, his collections do not consist out of heirlooms and such, but rather ordinary things instead. From stamps to matchbooks - there are few things he is not collecting. Occassionally too Vladimir engages in writing, mostly poetry, as it seems that he is much more eloquent and confident when not having to speak to someone directly, as he won't have to worry about being laughed at or thought of as a failure. At least not until someone else reads his works, which is why he hasn't shown them to anyone yet.

  • History: Vladimir's parents were proud.
No, pretentious would probably be a better word here. She was a notary, he a lawyer. And both of them were sure they were better than the common rabble. The two of them had met in court on a case about some old lady's testament. As each of them noticed the other one was trying to draw out the process as long as possible in order to increase their pay, the two of them started talking and eventually formed a marriage of convenience, both hoping to use the other in order to improve their own social and financial standing.

Now the two of them knew, that they would need someone to continue their legacy once they would be gone from this earth, so they decided to bring Vladimir into this world. And to be a suitable heir to their family name, they believed, he would need only the highest-quality, most expensive education that was available. Thus, after he had finished elemntary school, they went on to hire the most respectable professors, businessmen, clergy and such to homeschool the young Vladimir, teaching him about such subjects as economy, politics, law and religion while keeping him as far away from the common people and their savage beasts outside as possible.

For hours daily he had to sit in the library and study contemporary literature, etiquette, playing the piano and most everything else that a person of respectable standing might have to know. All of this with the express purpose of getting the young Vladimir to one day take up a prestigious profession, one such as doctor or politician, one that would allow him to quickly ascend the social ladder and bring honour to his family name. It was a strict and regulated childhood and one Vlad wasn't exactly fond of.

During these times Vladimir often was beset by a peculiar set of emotions - emotions he wasn't quite able to place yet. Looking back it is quite clear to him now what he had been feeling, but to the young Vladimir these feelings were a mystery considering he lacked the real-world experience needed to understand them. To him this hollow, empty feeling simply couldn't be loneliness. After all he talked to both his parents and his teachers frequently, didn't he? And how could he feel unfulfilled, seeing how many things his family owned and what great a chance he had to rise even higher!

It didn't even occur to him that this might not have been what he himself wanted. Having only ever heard his parents' point of view, it was to his understanding that everyone should strive for the things he had - that everyone did strive for the things he had. Of course some people had it worse than he had, but it didn't seem that unfair to the young Vladimir. After all if they wanted to have more money, they should just have worked more and harder. And if his parents had made it this far, their opinion had to hold some merit.

In his naivety these beliefs made sense to him. The situation of the poorer classes could not be that much worse, or could it? And because of this, he dismissed those emotions, believing that this was how he was supposed to be feeling.

He knew the exact order of importance of titles of nobility and could tell the difference between a beef fork and a fish fork, but had almost no idea of how to carry a conversation with someone his age. Due to his lack of social interaction with teenagers it took him until he was seventeen years old to learn what is a high-five.

In fact his first real contact with the less privileged parts of society took place when Vladimir, a young teenager by then, stumbled on some case files one of his parents had left in the library by accident. Having found a welcome distraction from the less than interesting reading about foreign laws he was supposed to be doing, there was little hesitation before he read through them. But as he continued reading, Vladimir was getting more and more appalled at the hardships poorer people apparently had to go through, some having to do unspeakable things just to feed their families. His parents obviously knew about this sort of thing happening, so why weren't they doing anything about it? It was around this time, that Vladimir began to truly question his parents.

Soon he started trying to smuggle money and food out of the house in order to donate them to the poor. Unfortunately his knowledge of the "normal world" still was quite limited, and he wound up being taken advantage of a few times. One fateful day, runours of Vladimir's actions having spread already, he even was assaulted and robbed for the money he was hoping to donate. His parents, easily noticing the wounds their son had sustained, found out what happened, and after giving Vladimir quite the scolding, went on to destroy the robber in court, making his situation far worse than it had been before. Shocked at what he had involuntarily caused to happen, Vlad did not attempt to donate money again out of fear of a similar incident occurring.

He did however continue to defy his parents, foregoing his studies and instead started reading about things he was interested in. It was through reading these books that an idea was starting to take root in his mind. He had been made study his family' more-or-less ancient heirlooms plenty of times before, but he had only ever been told about the supposedly great deeds the supposedly great people owning them were supposed to have done.

Considering his parents had been withholding information from him before, Vladimir found himself compelled to believe, that these people too had a darker side. But just asking his parents would very likely lead to very predictable results, so he had to resort to an alternative tactic. Vladimir wanted to find out what happened. Not just in his family's history, but in history in general.

People should know exactly what had happened where and when, so they could make their own descisions on which people to consider heroes or not. But for that to be possible, the information would have to be dug up first. And someone would have to do that, so Vladimir found himself reading more and more about history, culture, archaeology.

One day he would become a world-renowned archaeologist, discovering the truth about historical events and making it public knowledge! Would become - if it wouldn't be for his meddling parents. He would have to tell them about his plans some day, and they were almost guranteed to disagree. What prestige was there to be gained by having their child digging in the dirt? That's how they were going to see it - no doubt about that. But Vladimir was willing to risk it. After all there wasn't anything to lose, was there?

It came as it had to - discussions, then disagreements, debates and arguments culminating in a lot of shouting and screaming and sleeping on the couch for everyone involved. After everyone had regained their voices a week later, they sat together one more time, more calmly this time. And finally a compromise could be found.

Vladimir would become a curator, working in the general direction of work he intended to while not hurting his family name by "playing in the sandbox" as his mother put it. And thus Vladimir almost immediately set out to study history and archaeology at a renowned university.

He learned a lot about social behaviour there, being surrounded by equals of his own age for the first time, managing to become more mellow and slightly less neurotically perfectionistic. He didn't, however, make any friends there, seeing as how most of his fellow students seemed to only focus on getting drunk and visiting the dormitories of the other (and occassionally the same) gender, both things Vladimir wasn't even slightly interested in. Of course it didn't help his reputation among the other students when he decided to do the right thing and notified the staff about the prank planned by some other students consisting out of stealing the keys to all toilets and locking them, then slipping laxatives into the cafeteria food. Soon however Vladimir graduated and quickly followed up by earning his Ph.D. with a thesis about Johtoan Maritime History. Once he had notified his family about this, his father - as agreed - pulled some strings to get him a job as the curator of a moderately renowned museum in a remote region.

Soon after that had happened, communication between Vladimir and his family pretty much ended. Vladimir had come to know, that almost exactly nine months after he moved out, his mother had given birth to a daughter, which they named Danielle. It seemed that they really weren't satisfied with what Vladimir had become, having a second child just so she could fill the role they had intended for him to play. Feeling kind of betrayed, Vladimir then had no concerns about traveling the world in order to acquire new artifacts for the museum, occassionally even visiting actual digsites.

One time however - he was being shown around a recently excavated temple of sorts - he couldn't help himself but indulge in his curiosity, picking up a rope that was tied around a wooden post, asking what it was there for, inadvertently giving it too much of a pull and causing the post to fall, which in turn led to the collapse of part of the temple and him having his arm broken by a falling piece of rock. It took him a while until he went on another expedition after that, his curiosity suppressed but not subdued by the event.

His latest expedition was a special one though. It led him to the ruins of an ancient city that had been submerged in the desert sands. The time spent there in itself was nothing out of the ordinary, but as he returned to the museum and opened one of the crates supposed to contain the collected artifacts, a creature darted out, fleeing into the museum.

It was a (please randomize), which had apparently snuck into the crate when noone had been looking and then got trapped inside of it. Now it was threatening to destroy or at least seriously damage several important pieces on its escape through the museum. Seeing how it likely had little chance to survive on its own in the significantly colder Shtearan climate, Vladimir, with a heavy heart, found himself forced to capture the Pokémon. Seeing as how he had little experience with Pokémon before, Vladimir then made the choice to take an extended vacation from his job, traveling to Johto in order to travel through it, hoping to be able to bond with his Pokémon on the journey.

  • Starter: Please randomize.
  • Other: Some time in his life, Vladimir would love to visit Stonehenge, but he hasn't found the time to do so yet.

Alright, your character is good to go! Sorry it took me so long! Accepted!

he looks pretty grumpy maybe it's because of all the kids bothering him

Also, I usually only like to start an RP at around sixish people. More would be great, but if we can get that many, I'll start this at 12:15 AM, central time, December 28th. That's one week from now!

Four is a little low. Like, I don't like to start a game with less than six. But alright. I'll start it.

If the other players are still here, I'd like to sign up and boost the number to five.

I'm still here. Y'all seem nice and I gotta practice not being awkward and nooby, so I won't be abandoning this.

  • Name: Howard Covey
  • Class: Hiker
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Howard is a short, yet average-framed individual. His brown hair is short, yet curly. His eyes are blue. He often is found wearing a tan fisherman's hat, along with a t-shirt of green color, and jeans as well.
  • Personality: Howard is someone who seeks to have the thrill of adventure, as well as fulfilling a sense of accomplishment. He often finds himself liking to walk about, even pacing in place should he be unable to really locate himself. Howard is an individual who likes a good challenge, and should he find a harder choice to take on that he is fairly sure (in his mind) he'll succeed, he'll take up the challenge. Howard is rather fond of hiking in the forests, though he'd also like the mountains and caves. He isn't much of a man for hiking in cities, wanting to prefer nature's scenery to some buildings.
  • History: Being the only son in his family, he had learned that his family had love to travel, though he noticed his parents had preferred the cities to the wilderness. Howard had been inspired by his parents to travel across the world, but he wanted to explore more than just the cities. With a little request to his parents, and a bit of talking, the father approved of the action, telling Howard to make his grandfather proud. As for the mother, she also approved, but warned Howard not to get too deep into trouble. With one last farewell, Howard moved out, intent to explore the world ahead of him.
  • Starter: (Roll one up! Didn't have a starter in mind)
  • Other: Stonehenge

I don't think a week's time is long enough to make this a necro. You should be good.
