So, unless you are French or a Wakfu fan (give it a try if you do not know, it is a very entertaining cartoon), you probably do not know about Dofus.

It is a rather succesful Flash-animated T-RPG game where fights happen on grid maps that are not unlike Final Fantasy Tactics. You control a single character belonging to one of the fifteen pre-existing classes (some of them having some form of Sdrawkcab Name in French) and use Action and Movement Points to eliminate your enemies and gather loot in a very cute cartoony environment (check Wakfu - it is the same universe).

Gathering and Crafting skills are also present, but with RNG elements since almost all looted or crafted equipment has random stats (for example, a hat giving +21-30 Intelligence and +21-30 Strength). But you can try to "mage" your item in order to increase its stats - knowing that it doesn't always work - or even add some stats that weren't there in the first place.

You will also have a lot of dungeons to explore, with many of them including a Shout-Out to another media (or more than one) - such as Sphincter Cell (and his four turtles) or the Tanukoui San and its enormous testicles that he uses to summon kitsunes.

Do not get fooled by the cartoony universe though - it is a difficult game: leveling up to the max level (200) takes a very, very long time, and a lot of bosses require complex tactics to be hit, let alone beaten. One of the most famous players in the original game constantly came back to it because after spending a lot of time on Dofus he found other MMO (such as WOW) to be too easy to master.

— End of the introduction —

I created this thread, though, because Ankama announced that Dofus Touch, a tablet version of Dofus, was in closed beta since mid-october. They did not announce a release date, but gave some important informations:

  • The game will be the same than the PC one up until the 2.14 version (which was released on august 2013 - the game was created in 2004, so there is still a lot of content included), except played on tablets.
  • The game will be free to play (unlike the original which requires a fee to access most of the content). There will be microtransactions, obviously, but these will concern cosmetic or practical items, such as familiars (useful in combat, but that will have in-game equivalents if you know where to look at), experience bonuses, exclusive mounts, emotes... There will be no high-level items obtainable this way (some low level cosmetic ones, though).

The official website is here (and available in English, although the forums are only in French right now). I definitely think it is worth a look, if only for the visual style. I have already said it, but the characters are absolutely adorable (as are the familiars).
