The year is 525 by the imperial calendar and the hundredth year of the fourth immortal Dread Emperor’s reign, and the continent of Cenya seems on the verge of chaos. The Dread Imperium’s soldiers have not conquered a new territory in fifty years when the emperor tried and failed to conquer the Kingdom of Hinalia to the South and now the Emperor is building up for another offensive. The Kingdom of Hinalia, despite being a peace loving kingdom, has not halted in its process of militarization as the Blue King deeply fears another war with the Dread Imperium. Meanwhile, there are rumors that dragonborn clans of the desert are expecting the return of Malak, the ancient dragon king, from his thousand year journey in the Plane of Fire. Earthquakes have been happening all over the central part of the continent that have been attributed to a drow civil war but no one who has gone down into the underdark to investigate has returned. To top things off a mysterious wizard in red has been seen traveling all over the land taking adventurers on missions from which they never return.

Meanwhile in a small cave in the halfling province of Greenshire, several adventurers embark on a quest that will go down in history…

So I’ve been wanting to run a D&D 5e campaign. I’ve been planning to run this campaign for my IRL group but I would like to test it out first. I love D&D and I want to try it in a text forum setting. I know that there’s a ton of these in this forum but hopefully this one will stand out. I’m looking for the standard 3-5 players starting at level 1. If you have any questions about the world ask below or PM me.

The Rules

  • Be nice

  • The DM has final say

  • No metagaming

  • Try to keep PVP to an absolute minimum.

  • No making social rolls on each other (persuasion, intimidation, etc.)

     The Nations of the World

  • The Dread Imperium - The Dread Imperium is an expansionist empire ruled by the ironfisted Dread Emperor who has his sights set on complete domination of the continent. The Imperium is extremely militaristic and authoritarian. The Imperium is primarily human though there are large amounts of other races.

  • Provinces of the Imperium

    • Greenshire - Greenshire is the ancestral home of the halflings and the largest province of the Imperium. It is a land of rolling hills and green fields where most of the halfling residents reside underground in small hills. It is the breadbasket of the Imperium. The vast majority of Greenshire’s inhabitants are halflings with many humans.

    • Ashenden - Ashenden is a small strip of barren, volcanic land that borders the desert of Malak-Ti-Val. It is the southernmost province of the Imperium and acts as a buffer between the desert and the Imperium. Ashenden’s population is mostly humans with some halflings and dragonborn.

  • The Kingdom of Hinalia - A polar opposite of the Imperium. Hinalia is an idyllic kingdom ruled by the Blue King. While it is traditionally peace loving. The current king has been militarizing in preparation for another invasion by the Dread Imperium. This has caused some unrest among the nobles who think that he’s threatening the peace. They also cite that if they are invaded, the royal knights, the wizards of the Grand University, and the king’s own two daughters (both level 20 wizards) can protect them without a massive army of citizen soldiers. This issue has been exacerbated by the king hiring mercenaries to deal with the wyvern riding raider tribes in the mountains and the goblin incursions. To make matters worse a few nobles are actually calling for Hinalia to be the aggressor in a war against the Imperium. The population is mostly humans and high elves. Hinalia has the highest population of half elves anywhere on the continent.

  • Malak-Ti-Val - The massive expanse of desert in the center of the continent. Mostly ruled by a group of regional rulers. The only reason the Imperium has not taken over the desert is because the rules, while they frequently fight amongst themselves, often band together and put aside their differences when they face an external threat. Most of the population are humans with some dragonborn.

  • Lunendel - Lunendel is ancient dwarven kingdom that spans both the south western peninsula of the North Lands and the northwestern part of the mainland. Most of the cities are grand underground caverns with few above ground structures except for vast farmland. On the peninsula this is mainly because of the presence of large amounts of orcish raiders. On the mainland this is because the dwarves have made an arrangement with local giants that they can have the surface if they help defend Lunendel in the event of an imperial invasion.

  • The Land of the Fey - The Land of the Fey is where most of the high elves live. It is an ancient land of grand elven structures over enchanted forest. Most of the inhabitants are very xenophobic and want to avoid getting involved with the affairs on the main continent. There is much discussion however about what should be done about keeping the colonies on the Continent. The population is almost entirely high elves with a gnome minority.

  • Valton - Valton is a massively forested country composed mainly of wood elves and gnomes. Most of the world’s druids are here. Recently, the high elves from the Land of the Fey have been trying to imperialise their cousins here which has led to much civil unrest. This area is mostly gnomes and wood elves with a few high elves and humans.

  • The Independent River Cities - The Independent River Cities are a group of three city states of Waterdale, Medross, and World Spine City. They are extremely rich oligarchies and control trade all up and down the rivers of the continent. There has been much speculation as to why the Imperium doesn’t just lay siege to these cities. The Prevailing theory is that the leaders of the cities pay the Imperium enormous sums of money to maintain their freedom. The three cities are by far the most racially diverse areas with every sentient race being found in these cities in large numbers.

  • Muna - Muna is an island nation ruled by an ancient tree nymph. This nymph bids all the citizens of Muna live in absolute harmony with nature. Each town in Muna has its own nymph that governs the town. The population of Muna is mostly wood elves with some humans and gnomes

  • Ragnord - Ragnord refers to the group of northern tribes ruled by jarls. Ragnord is ultimately ruled by a high jarl who maintains an iron fist. The Ragnorden armies are tasked with guarding the gateway to the Snows of the Dead, a barren expanse of tundra that is said to house dozens of liches and legions of undead. The populations is mostly humans and dwarves.

     The Imperium’s System of Succession

Basically, the Dread Emperor is immortal. The fourth and current Dread Emperor has ruled for almost one hundred years. The only way the Dread Emperor can be succeeded is if a member of the royal family kills him, and then only by using a sword has been broken into pieces and distributed among the oldest members of the family. The system is designed to create competition among the royal family to the point that they may kill each other to get their hands on the sword and kill the emperor. This ensures that whoever is sitting on the throne is a ruthless killer (It’s called the Dread Imperium for a reason).
