Two questions:
Is there a nice summary of the differences from canon somewhere? I'm considering signing up as a bit of an outsider bumpkin to minimize the weirdness of not knowing the exact details of whatever is different there, but if there's anything extremely evident and in the news, I can't really avoid having even a clumsy idiot realize said things happened.
Second, are people on the waiting list waiting only for enough teammates or is there a hard player cap? The hypothetical character list in the OP is tantalizingly empty.

@Anyone asking: Regarding the events of RWBY, I tend to play by ear. Some of the show did happen, but other times, I'm having fun mucking around with the plots that have been formed and are being formed.
The reason I am bumping this up is because there might be a bunch of new spots opening. Or not.
