The type of impact left by the Dragonball franchise

To be honest, i think I've always had mixed feelings about this franchise. There are some good things about it, the fight sequences being one of them. But other aspects have always bothered me, in fact, you could call them my pet peeves about the series. One of which is the general behaviour of some the characters, like how some of them act like jerks.

For a while, i guess it didn't bother me all that much, but now that i think about these issues, they really bother me and I'm so into the franchise (so to speak), i can't just stop watching it, or i could, but the memories would still bother me. For example, though there were certain parts of the Saiyan, Frieza and Cell sagas that i liked, certain things (character behaviour among them) really put me off, if that makes sense.

I bring all of this up because, on a fanart sight, a fan artist who makes pictures for a DC Comics show that i like also did a few Vegetax Bulma pictures. That got me wondering why he was into that couple, and not Goku and Chi-Chi (I don't think that those two got enough attention). He pointed out a few reasons why Vegeta and Bulma are a good match and i find it hard to argue with them. But not only did that get me stuck thinking about DBZ again (mostly the parts that i didn't care for), it also got me wondering what that says for Goku and Chi-Chi. Is that to imply that they aren't a good match? I already don't get the flack Chi-Chi gets as it is.

I thought we had all agreed that Dr Slump was by far the better of Toriyama's works.

It seems not.

What sort of "impact" are you trying to talk about anyway?

Toriyama has admitted he can't write romance, although you'd think he'd at least try to improve at it then.

[up]Oh, Dr. Slump is far better, but quality doesn't equal impact, sadly.

I've never read Dr.Slump.

I can't really think of a shounen manga which did romance particularly well outside of Rurouni Kenshin (not Kaoru btw, i'm talking about tomoe), which was in itself fairly atypical and the Jump people I think got on Watsuki's case because not enough guys were reading it (as if the demographic really matters as long as it's popular).

In order to write something properly you either have to experience it yourself or do enough research to the point where you can do it convincingly. I don't mean to paint with too broad a brushstroke, but a lot of manga authors aren't necessarily well-versed in the intricacies of human relationships because by nature it's a profession that requires hours of dedicated pain-staking practice in order to reach an adequate level of draftsmanship. not to mention the fact many of them are socially awkward in the first place. this leads to them spending far more time honing their craft than necessarily experiencing life, which causes problems.

i have to admit i'm a bit confused by what this is trying to discuss because the title makes me think of a discussion about how dragon ball has influenced other manga, but there's not much of that in the OP.

I'm pretty sure Toriyama has been married for a long time.

in cases like that i think the author is probably just used to shounen genre conventions and isn't necessarily interested in representing their life experiences in their work.

or well, then they just have no excuse lol
