But that's not even really just soon-der-ay thing...

It seems to just happen regardless of the character type.

Well if I'm not mistaken aren't more of the well known tsundere violent usually?

If a girl megaton punches a date-able guy in any anime... it has nothing to do with being a Tsundere or not. It's comedic, cartoony violence that happens instead of a slap. Even shy girls do it, depending on the work.

Tsundere originally refers to "Someone hostile to their love interest, but secretly likes him/her". It's a common trope, Anime or not (how many times have you heard "If he's teasing you, it's because he likes you"? Even the Slap-Slap-Kiss trope tends to depend on Tsunderes). The stereotypical Tsundere ("It's not like I like you or anything!") is a very specific interpretation that has been run to the ground due to how popular it is... but that doesn't mean it's the only one.

...

Anyway, I don't think Aerith is a tsundere, as I don't recall her acting hostile towards Cloud (it's been a long time since I played the game, but I certainly don't remember her acting that way. note ). Abridged!Tifa likely qualifies as one, though.

Tsundere aren't always violent, but they're always really mean. And I guess the quintessential example back in the day (Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion) was also a very messed up person.

I think Aerith has some traits of a Yandere... sometimes, I find it inconsistent. It was a relatively big thing at the beginning of season 2 ("out of mana", refusing to hear out Yuffie's offer, tagging along and covertly insulting Tifa on the boat) but we didn't get moments like that after we got to Costa del Sol except maybe for the "Yeah, good luck with that!" when Caith Sith read their fortune.

It's comedic, cartoony violence that happens instead of a slap.
And as a result, a slap becomes much more serious when it does happen. It wasn't a slap, but I still remember Winry's only "serious" violent gesture toward one of the Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, when she slammed Al hard with a wrench.

If the well known ones are violent, they're most likely from a fighting series...

It really depends on the series and the writer.

Essentially, the absolute base default is the Childhood Friend/Sweet Normal Girl. Basically the modern version of the YN. This is for a series that doesn't give a damn about romance but still includes a romance story.

The next step beyond that is the Tsundere. This is for a series that wants to include Will They or Won't They? type drama with the Tsundere elements also acting as comedy fodder.

Since the Tsundere archetype is so ingrained it takes almost no effort to move from the default to that, which is why they started outnumbering the default Sweet Normal Girl.

It's always amused me how there's such debate over the definitions of "tsundere/yandere." I guess I get uppity about what people call "anime" and "not anime," so I can understand it, but I've always looked at Tsundere to typically mean "Haruhi Suzumiya" and Yandere to typically mean, "Yuno Gasai."

Abridged!Tifa is tsundere, Abridged!Aerith is borderline yandere, or at least portrayed similarly.

Typical Tsunderes just tend to act passive-assertive with some slapstick while being nice or assertively introverted to everyone else

All that means is that Tifa is a tsundere, just not a "typical" one. Being passive-aggressive is one way of being hostile, being straight-up offensive and foul-mouthed is another one. note

As for "Yandere"... all I know about that archetype is that she needs to be A. Obsessive/Overly Clingy; and B. Harm somebody (potentially herself) over it. So I agree with you there, I don't think Aerith has quite checked "B" yet (nor do I expect her to).

[up]i'm not seeing any "dere" out of any of the girls so far.

As a whole, I find that this series is pretty rough. I was somewhat more lenient with the first bunch of episodes of DBZ Abridged, since that was a relatively new thing, and it got much better over time. But this is made by the same guys, and I kinda expected higher quality out of them. Most of the jokes are pretty one-note and shallow, and to be honest the characters aren't really that memorable. I still don't see myself laughing my ass off like i did at Vegeta in the Broly movie. That kind of humour is defined by the characters, and those jokes wouldn't work with any other character because, well, we know how each character works, and they're all different.

in this show, basically everyone calls Cloud incompetent, and Barrett makes black jokes.

It's the only thing at all that made him stand out in my memory. Otherwise his jokes are basically the same as tifa or aeris's.

Same way that red makes dog jokes.

Actually i think that's the bigger problem so far... This series really aims for the low-hanging fruit.

Ugh. Much as I dislike the second season of this, I need another quality abridged series to keep me entertained and, unfortunately, Dragonball Z and Sword Art are both "in the works." Seemed like we had a good year for abridged series last year and now most of the ones I like are at a standstill.

Probably won't see Hellsing for another 3 years.

Masako edits Hellsing, not Kaiser, so it should show up before then.

I'd give it 2 years. tongue

Antfish said on the Super Best Friendcast that the next season will only be five episodes. Why is that?

I'm under the assumption that each season covered the same content as a disc from the original game. Maybe there isn't much to abridged plot wise.

[up] Nope. It's been two seasons now, and we haven't even left Disc One (since you-know-what doesn't happen until the end of said disc).

That said, I doubt we'll get a separate season for Disc 3, since that pretty much consists of just the WEAPON fights, the final trek into the Northern Crater, and any sidequests left unfinished that didn't get locked out during the transition from Disc Two to Disc Three. TFS will probably have the final season start in late Disc Two, then cover Disc Three during said season since it's just that short.

If you think about what happens next in the game, they probably wanted to end this season at THING WHICH HAPPENS WHICH IS A SPOILER.

If 5, that basically means Rocket Town and Cid, Wutai, Gold Saucer for the dates, Bone Village and the Ancient Forest, and the Forgotten Capital and Aerith's death.
