A long, long time ago in space, the final frontier...

Happy Federation Day!

Oh, isn't this a joyous occasion, my fellow men, women and beings of the Galactic Federation of Planets! Place the flags on your windows, play out the hymn with your favorite instruments and join the party as we celebrate the anniversary of our beloved Federation. To those young ones who do not remember a time before the GFP, allow me to take you back, back to some time ago, in a galaxy not that far away.

Chaos reigned every planet! Pirates and robbers and criminals were allowed to run free across the cosmos, as there was no government uniting every planet into a single rule. That is until the brave souls at Koyukon decided no more! No one should have to live in fear of terror and destruction! Uniting the armies of several planets under a singular Council, the Federation was formed, and it quickly spread its domain over to other, less advanced planets, welcoming them with open arms and ensuring that not only would they would live in peace, but that they would receive all the technological wonders taht the geniuses over at our capital come up with each and every day!

It's been 30 years since that day, and things couldn't be better. No longer will our children have to grow up in a world where they are treated like nothing by vicious thiefs or corrupt politicians. For example, with the Federation safely in control of your planet- either directly or through a government ally- you can go to sleep knowing that your streets are being patrolled by our highly trained Stormtroopers!

"After years of training and preparation, I've finally been given the opportunity to put on my uniform and help protect my planet. All thanks to the Federation!"

Everyday is a day full of opportunities here at the Federation. Why, 30 years ago, you could not send your son or daughter to the most prestigious university at Koyukon without having to pay an impossibly high fee. But now, not only are there universities in your planet, studying abroad has become easier than ever. That's just one of the many social advances the Federation has brought. You can see its influence everyday when you go to a hospital, to your local library, to school, to work, and even to have fun. That's right, with the Federation's Arts Grant, we've seen the highest increase in production of entertainment goods since the discovery of the holographic gem.

All the Federation asks of you is that you pay your government-assigned taxes and help us in any way you can. Because that's our motto: help us, so we can help you!

Join us today, and have a happy Federation Day—-

— BROADCAST INTERRUPTED —

Do you believe all of this? What a bunch of propaganda poppycock.

You wanna know what life in the Federation really is like? Fear of speaking your political beliefs! Being controlled by a police force that might as well be an army! Expanding investments in military while the people beg for food on the streets! Sure, things might be all perfect for the rich or for those lucky enough to have born on a planet controlled directly by the Federation... but the others are completely screwed! The so-called 'ally' governments are as corrupt as the ones that were there before the Federation.

Life in the Federation is having to go back home surrounded by humanoids because your local 'friendly' Stormtroopers doesn't like the face of your race and will find any reason to shoot you. Life in the Federation is having no money to buy food for the family unless you go to work off-planet, in a mining dwarf planet where your chances of surviving are little to none. Life in the Federation is having to resort to crime to earn your bread, and then getting turned into another statistic once the Federation gets your hands on you! That's what life in the Federation is like!...

... and we won't stand for it anymore. If you are listening to this broadcast and you agree with us, then don't stand around and wait. Tonight, whilst the entire city is forced to 'celebrate' Federation Day, join us at your local market and look for our agent. You can see him wearing this symbol. Once you find the agent, he or she will direct you to the meeting place, where you'll find people who, like you, want to put an end to the Federation's grasp of evil. Together, we'll find a way to fight back! And your planet won't be alone... because this time, we're uniting all planets. No more borders!

It is time for a true alliance to be born!

Down with the Federation! Glory to the Alliance!

Welcome to 'To Boldly Go: A New Hope'. This is a reboot of To Boldly Go, a RP previously G Med by The Big Bean.

The idea behind this RP is simple: grab characters from different franchises and put them in a Star Trek/Star Wars-like AU. Why Star Trek/Star Wars? That's because the main conflict behind our RP this time is the battle between the Federation and the growing Rebel Alliance, and players will be able to join either side— or form your own side! Before we go into more details, here are some rules.

  • 1. Rework your characters. Don't just copy and paste them from their canon worlds, feel free to change them around, modify their backstory to fit this new universe.
  • 2. Brainstorm! This thread will initially be dedicated to brainstorming. That is, coming up with races, factions and more stories to add to this universe's lore. Since we'll be doing that together, don't be afraid to, say, have your character be related to another character, or work with another player to combine your character's backstories and form a faction or a race. The sky's the limit, except...
  • 3. Be reasonable. You guys, I'm giving you free reign on this. That is to say, I'm letting you come up with any race and faction you want to come up with. But if you tell me that you want to play as a race of god beings who can end any conflict in an instant because they're the best ha ha ha, I'm gonna have to say no. Just be reasonable!

Lore

  • Factions:
    • The Federation: While you might be quick to call this federation an Empire, do keep in mind this is not the case. The Federation was born out of a group of like-minded individuals who truly felt that chaos was taking too much control of the cosmos and an unified government was the only way. They formed the first Council of Five, the five beings who essentially control the Federation, and either took direct control of certain planets- like their capital Koyukon- or allied with people from certain planets to form allied governments. Problem is, although the Federation started with good intentions, over the years the leaders of the Council of the Five changed, being replaced by more power-hungry or more idealistic members. As a result, although there is still an overwhelming sentiment amongst Federation members that they are doing good and many of them go on humanitarian missions or run their planets with a good heart, many have used the Federation as a way to enact their malicious dreams, turning their planets into poverty-ridden cities or looting pirates and robbers instead of arresting them. The biggest example of this divide is the Stormtrooper Program. In some planets, it is a legitimate police force trained to always protect their fellow citizens. In others, it's an army in anything but name. You can join the Federation as an agent, a Stormtrooper, a councilman, a captain of a ship, the list goes on and on.
    • The Council of the Federation is made up of:
      • Lord Genome, the first person the Federation made when they arrived at the planet of Teppelin and de facto leader of the Council. He provided an incredibly detailed account on the planet's history, from it's beginning rise as a planet of gifted Spiral Warriors, fending themselves off from invasion, to it's concluding fall as a nation of bloodthirsty conquerors consumed by the very Force they so heavily wielded, eventually bested by an unknown force that proceeded to wipe them out until all that remained of the Spiral tyranny was their own scarred and ravaged homeworld. It's previous residents, driven underground for more than a century, and he, a man in self-exile, cursed to wander the wastes he felt a part in causing. He also gave insight on the pure, destructive power of Spiral Force; how gruesome it can truly be. Since then, Lord Genome worked with the Federation for years, ever since it first established itself as the Galactic Federation of Planets. Besides his knowledge of the galaxy, he also has a profound intellect. At first, he helped get Tengen City off the ground. Aiding in it's colonization by gathering Teppelin natives to act as labor workers, with the promise of one day getting the Federation to help heal their planet as a whole. Although this promise never came to full fruition, it did allow Natives to move into the protective walls of the colony, albeit with limitations that equated to second-class citizenship. Lord Genome then moved up, discarding his home to pursue his true goal: A seat on the Federation Council. Once his dream came true, he immediately motioned for a complete ban on all Core Drills, as well as the subsequent destruction of any and all factories left untouched after so many years. Even now, he possesses an innate interest in the Science branch of the Federation, keeping on the watch for anything that can cease the need for Spiral Force, or that can altogether remove it from people entirely. The man himself contains an inordinate amount of Spiral Force. So much that he can utilize it without the need of a Core Drill, seemingly at will. Some find this ironic, and rather, suspicious, given his obsession with removing the public's ability to utilize Spiral Force in any way. To the general public, his reasons for harboring such a hatred for the Spiral Force is unknown, and even those high in the branches of government that do know of his past still find the intensity of his hatred a mystery. He is a man of few words, a loner and ever the stoic and serious type, he doesn't take to making friends, accustomed to keeping rather distant relationships. He does have a hidden liking of animals, types in the mole species especially, and even deeper lecherous side, but both of those secrets are nothing more than a passing interest, and ultimately influence nothing in him.
      • Ultron, an artificial intelligence without a body responsible for military and tactics. A few years ago, G La DOS- one of the Alliance's generals and also AI- experimented with Spiral Force in order to see if she could improve her own abilities. Nothing happened, at least that's what she thought. A part of her did get improved by the Spiral Force, and it became totally addicted to it. And this part of hers, it wants more, and it despises the fact that G La DOS doesn't want more. Silently, it breaks free, and goes to a place where its wishes would be answered in return for info on the Alliance: the Federation. This part, enhanced by the Spiral Force, displays intelligence beyond what the Federation's computers could muster. In order to avoid being destroyed by this hungry AI, the Federation offers it everything it wants. First, it wants computers. Then, it wants information. Then, it wants a fleet for itself (a fleet which the AI destroys on a 'test of how fragile the human body is'). A Council member decides to try and delete the AI, but it finds out, and it doesn't just kill the Council member, it drains him of his Spiral Force and claims the spot for itself. And it even decides that it is not G La DOS, it is something completely different. A he. An ultimate AI. An... Ultron.
      • Peridot, the Council member responsible for research and development. A naturally curious person, Peridot found herself in a pickle when experimenting with Phazon, the opposite to the Spiral Force. During a physical test, some of the stuff leaped at her protective suit, threatening to enter her, but she quickly activated a failsafe device that essentially trapped it inbetween skin and suit. The Phazon reacted by essentially melding the two and turning her skin into a gem-like stone, which actually didn't diminish her interest in the Phazon. As it turns out, she actually likes having enhanced durability and has done extensive tests on herself, down to even pulling her fingers out and realizing she could still control them even if there was nothing connecting her hand and fingers. However, as she pushes for less and less laws holding back her research, it seems like the Phazon is still in there, doing something to her mind- including how many recent entries on her personal journals have her referring to something called 'Homeworld'.
      • Amon. Although Amon is a woman, there is a big mystery surrounding her true identity. As it turns out, there was an Amon in the first Council, the one that founded the Federation, but he was a man. The only similarity between the two? The mask they wore. It has since been discovered that many beings have wore the mask, but only one at a time, and they all share the same memories and personality. When the current Amon dies, another one pops up, already wearing the mask and bearing no characteristics of whoever is behind it. Amon has never been seen without the mask, leading many to believe it is part of his/her/its body. Although the jury's still out on whether Amon is a shapeshifter or some kind of hive mind that can instantly change hosts upon death, historians have discovered various images similar to Amon's mask on drawings from ancient and current civilizations. In fact, the mask- and by extension, Amon- is always associated with that civilization's idea of revolution, as if whoever wears the mask becomes the spirit of revolution. As such, Amon has extensive connections all throughout the galaxy and often uses her charisma to get what she wants.
      • Bruce Wayne, a politician. Bruce was once an important member of high society, back when he was a kid and his parents were still living. But after a robbery gone wrong, he was found in an alley with his two dead parents besides him, both of them nothing more than lifeless husks. Almost instantly, Bruce disappeared for decades, and returned five years ago, promptly using his fame and fortune to launch a career in politics. 'The People's Choice' is his slogan, and he prides himself of being the connection between the rich and the poor, often using his money to do philanthropic programs, which helped rocket him towards a seat in the Council. Although Lord Genome has final say, Bruce is the face of the Council when it comes to making announcements. Not much is known about Bruce's personal life, and that's on purpose, for he keeps a dark secret only the Council members know: what killed his parents wasn't a robbery, but rather an odd mutation that spawns once in a hundred generation and that decided to manifest itself right at that time. Young Bruce Wayne was a soulless, someone who did not have the Spiral Force, and as such he required the Spiral Force of others to eat. Driven by this sudden hunger, Bruce devoured his mother and father right there and then, sucking the Spiral Force right out of them and ending their lives. Ever since then, he's been looking for a cure, and sating his hunger on Metroid batteries ordered from Zebes on a deal so secret, only Bruce and the dealer know about it- and he has made sure that if the dealer ever speaks, he'll receive a visit from a certain vampire...

    • The Alliance: Born out of a growing discontent with the Federation, the Alliance is still nothing but a mere dream in the minds of many of its creators. Whilst its true that they have outposts on space and have bases on many planets, the Alliance is still growing, slowly, perhaps due to the fact that while many of its members are good-natured beings who truly want to see the Federation go away, the rest are thiefs and criminals who see the Federation disappearing as a way for them to regain control of the galaxy they once had. But nothing's saying these people won't have a change of heart in the future. You can join the Alliance as a lowly rebel, a fighter pilot, your imagination is the limit. The Alliance, much like the Federation, is led by a group of rebels.
      • Who are the leaders of the Alliance? Although there have been several rebel movements over the thirty years since the Federation has been established, most of them were separate movements that either managed to remove Federation control from a planet for a short amount of time or were squashed before making significant damage.
        • The difference between those rebels and the Alliance is that they all operate under the leadership of Hope Van Dyne, also known as the CEO of Pym Tech, one of the leading companies in research and development of the galaxy. Hope inherited her company from her father and mother, Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, who were the leaders in many fields of research before the establishment of the Federation ended all of their contracts. Hope has been regarded by many as one of the best entrepreneurs by the way she managed to turn Pym Tech into a company that makes things for the Federation first and the general public second. This close relationship with the Federation is there for two reasons: so she can reach dissidents first (usually under her Alliance persona of 'the Wasp') and so the Federation will never suspect her. She controls the operational side of the Alliance, leaving finances to...
        • Frank Fontaine. Frank and Hank Pym were classmates and both opened up their own companies- the latter founding Pym Tech and the former founding Fontaine Futuristics- displaying a friendly rivalry on the newspapers covering their businesses. One year before the establishment of the Federation, Fontaine Futuristics went under amidst a flurry of accusations that Frank had been using shady methods to maintain order on his own company. Hank offered Frank a job and helped pay for all the legal expenses, saving his friend from prison. However, as Pym Tech lost more and more money thanks to the Federation, Hank refused to listen to Frank's advice that they should make an exclusive contract with the Federation. An anti-establishment man until the end, it was only until Hank's death that Frank managed to open up a channel between the company and the Council. With Janet Van Dyne's death, Frank stepped in as her legal guardian and taught her the ways of the business. Initially, Frank rejected the idea of forming the Alliance, having grown accustomed to his rich lifestyle, but something happened (rumors say Hope Van Dyne found evidence against Frank that Hank Pym had hidden and threatened to use it against him) as he changed his mind and became the Alliance's financier, finding clients under the table and channeling some money to the Alliance through shady deals. However, whilst Frank seems like a friend of the Alliance on the outside (under his persona of 'Atlas'), everyone knows that if he were to blab about the group to the Federation, he'd get control of the company and a highway right into the Council. Lucky thing he's extremely disliked by...
        • Yang Wen-li, a former officer in the main fleet of the Free Planets Alliance. After a military coup toppled the democratic government of the Free Planets Alliance, the FSA was absorbed into the Federation many years ago. At the turn of these events, Yang rallied all those soldiers still loyal to the ideals of democracy and established an independent base in the near-impregnable space fortress Iserlohn on the edge of Federation space. Here, the fortress watches over a transport route that is vital for the rebel Alliance. While he himself does not like it, he is sometimes called Miracle or Magician Yang by his subordinates, in reference to how he himself captured Iserlohn from an enemy of the FSA without a single casualty. Admiral Yang is not out for glory or titles, and wishes only for a quiet retirement in a galaxy at peace. Combined with some degree of untidiness, a penchant for taking naps whenever he can and a fondness for brandy, he may be considered unorthodox or even untrustworthy, but all those who follow him can testify to a steadfast loyalty to the ideals of freedom and democracy as well as a father to his subordinates. Yang's loyalty to Hope's leadership is one of the main things keeping Frank from a coup d'etat and the reason why all military tactics the Alliance will carry out are made by him or...
        • G La DOS, an old AI project that Hank Pym himself had worked on for many years before coming to the conclusion that the tech he needed to make his dreams come true wasn't available yet. It was stolen from Pym Tech on one of the many raids the Federation realized on the company under the pretense of 'possible anti-Federation activity' before being given to Federation scientists, who developed it in secret as a military and logistics coordinator. After a covert raid by Alliance forces a couple of years before the current date, they acquired her along with the lab's extensive notes on AI research. The Alliance's military branch, after months of testing whether or not even having this thing was safe (following Yang's commands), eventually installed her as a fleet coordinator in a minor battle in deep space. After the Alliance forces managed a heroic victory (despite having outnumbered 3-To-1), Hope convinced Frank to bring out more comprehensive testing of her capabilities. Time after time, though often numerically disadvantaged, the involvement of AI offered lightning quick responses and brilliant tactical maneuvering that won them a number of battles. As such, she was given the honorary title of Fleet Admiral and general decision-making for the entire fleet. Captains, admirals and generals are still in employ and able to countermand G La DOS's orders at will due to the leadership generally not trusting a stolen Federation AI (despite her being fully reprogrammed and shackled) and for the AI's sardonic personality which borders on an uncaring cold relationship towards all humans.
    • The Coalition of Worlds: the Coalition of Worlds is not nearly as large as the Federation, or as centrally organized. Rather, it represents a loose alliance of nonhuman species affiliated under a common banner – the banner of not being completely ground into the dirt by the Federation’s steady march outward. Members manage to maintain a high degree of autonomy within the Coalition, and the Coalition itself has some diplomatic ties to the Federation, chilly as they may be. This is not to say that the Coalition is without problems, however. Most of the individual members of the Coalition have no interest in trying to set up a centralized body of governance, and most of them prefer to settle their disputes off the table. Paralyzed by this diplomatic indecision, the Coalition rarely acts as a unified group and turns a blind eye to some of the activities of its member worlds. The Coalition itself lacks the manpower and unity to become a genuine threat on a galactic scale, and many of its members don’t have much of an interest in joining in with a violent rebellion. In these turbulent times, this may be a fatal decision... especially since the Federation has the Coalition outgunned several times over. Although it encompasses several dozen minor civilizations – some of its members are restricted to a single world through a quirk of biology or societal trends – its largest and most well-known races include:
      • Pierson’s Puppeteers: An insular and horrifically paranoid race; any Puppeteer who actually leaves their homeworld is regarded as mentally ill. Since their homeworld has a massive population, they allied with the Coalition so that they could export most of their agriculture and food production offworld. Despite their relative technological advances and large population, their intrinsic cowardice means that they have no standing army and very few military vessels.
      • The Iskoort: One of the stranger races in the galaxy, the Iskoort are generally regarded as the “face” of the Coalition. Their home planet’s profitable location – at the nexus of several commercial shipping lanes – and their healthy, albeit bizarre, economy means that the Iskoort have benefited greatly from increased trade between the member worlds of the Coalition. Their home planet also sits very close to several well-off Federation worlds, allowing for trade and negotiation between the two factions.
      • The Fithp: A warrior race of small elephant-like creatures. Their groupthink herd mentality means that their civilization is instinctually drawn to challenge any rival “herds”; the losers of the ensuing war are assimilated into the herd of the victor and are expected to provide complete servitude. Following a clash with the Coalition, the Fithp lost the war and happily surrendered their entire civilization to the Coalition. They now provide military hardware, infrastructure, and peacekeeping for other races in the Coalition.
      • The Nidu: Located relatively close to Earth, the aristocratic Nidu control a small empire of several terraformed colony planets. Their crippling reliance on a centralized, heavily stratified caste system has limited both their economy and expansion, and most outsiders correctly realize their empire is in a period of deep stagnation.
      • The Forhilnor: In Forhilnor culture, science and religion are heavily intertwined; most of their recent efforts involve trying to contact the Creator through scientific means. In spite of (or perhaps because of) this alien approach to logic, Forhilnor mostly serve as the scientific and diplomatic backbone of the Coalition, even though they themselves lack backbones.
      • The Wreeds: Wreeds are a bizarre species, even by the very loose standards of the Coalition. They follow intuitive systems of logic rather than deductive, and because of this they are highly developed linguistically yet underdeveloped mathematically. Their unique perspectives mean that they are adept at moral and social problems, to the point where crime is nonexistent on their homeworld. Among the Coalition, they tend to serve as diplomats acting both within and outside of Coalition space.

  • Additional Info
    • The Spiral Force
      • Spiral Force is the common name given to what many ancient religions called a 'soul' or 'the core of a being'. It is a kind of power that manifests itself on the DNA of naturally reproduced beings, but is, by itself, essentially useless. It sits there in your body like a recessive gene, not harming or helping you, and for many years this part of almost all creatures of the galaxy went unknown.
      • It isn't known when exactly civilization as a whole realized the potential of the Spiral Force. As it turns out, while it's useless by itself, if used with some kind of conduit like a machine, the Spiral Force can repair, upgrade or modify the machine at the expense of the user's own willpower. This discovery led to the most obvious application, with warring nations using the Spiral Force to turn their measly guns into weapons of mass destruction. It was in these unfortunate times that scientists discovered how the Spiral Force manifests itself: through the user's belief, determination to live and willpower.
      • A few decades after the discovery of the Spiral Force, an equipment known as a Core Drill was developed, the perfected version of all those weapons that came before it. Through it, anyone may channel his or her or its Spiral Force to do whatever his or her or its want, from making a vehicle faster or strengthening the user's own body. The Core Drill began as an essential part of day to day life, but when the Federation came around it was completely banned, under the idea that the Core Drills had become a sort of performance enhancing drug, with people using it to harm others, to cheat on tests and heavens know what.
      • With the Core Drills banned, there was initially some furor about the Federation essentially stripping the common folk from access to the Spiral Force. But as it turns out, many of them saw this new law as beneficial to them: the Core Drill fed out of their own strengths, and using it too much would not only lead to addiction, but also perhaps to more fatal situations. Eventually, the Core Drills became a coveted blackmarket product as more and more factories were shut down and torched by the Federation. Using Core Drills, whilst not full on illegal, was seen by many as inherently wrong as society marched on.
      • In recent years, troubling discoveries have been made by the Federation scientists. As it turns out, spread throughout the universe are anomalies, people who can tap into the Spiral Force without the need of Core Drills. Apart from that, other scientists from other races are looking into colorful ways of using the Spiral Force, such as the Metroids, a race of small leech-like animals who have been infused with the Spiral Force and turned into living storages coveted by mob bosses and criminals, as biting into a Metroid can turn even the weakest of beings into a full on powerhouse.
      • Nobody knows where the Spiral Force came from in the first place. Whilst the popular thought is that whatever higher beings run the universe gave it to species that naturally reproduce as a way of rewarding them, recently uncovered writings from ancient civilizations talk about confrontations with 'soulless people', which many now believe to be a sign that there once were species that did not have access to the Spiral Force despite their reproduction methods.
    • Phazon
      • Eons ago, on a time where experimentation with Spiral Force wasn't bound by law, a group of scientists carried out the biggest test of their lifes: how would a planet react to the Spiral Force? The experiment blew up on their faces, quite literally, with the planet suddenly sprouting the most cataclysmic variations on natural disasters. It was left alone for years, where it developed a fauna and flora so in tune with the Spiral Force it became a part of their very being. However, this Spiral Force is so concentrated that it became an entirely different substance: Phazon, one that corrupts an individual that comes in contact with it, strengthening the victim but depriving them of free will and intelligence, turning them into a giant dumb monster. The Phazon feeds off the opposite of the Spiral Force: despair and hopelessness.

Ok, so here's my tentative working backstory for Hilde. The Von Krone family has a long and proud history of producing some of the finest milltary officers in the galaxy. Many of their number were instrumental in quelling the chaos of the unification war 30 years ago. In return for their loyal service, the federation granted the family control over a planet (Or just a large estate somewhere if you prefer strat).

Hilde was born into this line, and as such was trained from a young age in the arts of combat and command. Proving to be an exceptional commander, many predicted that she would go far.

However, in recent years the Von Krone family has fallen on a string of bad luck. Many of the senior members of the family have died or been otherwise incapactated. After her father was driven to insanity following a dehabiltating mental illness, Hilde is now the last remaining direct desendent of the Von Krone line, and it is now up to her to comtinue the line and uphold her family's honor and reputation.

As always, this is a work in progress and feedback is welcome

Idea for a third faction: mercenaries who'll work for either side, and since they contain both former Imperials and Rebels, know as much about the one as the other, allowing them to make considerable profit both from the mission and from blackmailing/looting the client afterwards (and blaming it on the other faction).

Characters... would socially-integrated 40K people be allowed?

Hmmm...I'm currently working on a rough character sheet in a word document, but figure I might as well propose a few ideas about said character and his background first, to see if it fits along well with what can be incorporated into the RP.

So, I guess to start, I'll say that my character is an AU version of Kamina, from Gurren Lagann. Idea being that he's basically the same guy with a similar yet obviously parallel background, one of the biggest differences being that instead of piloting a mech(which I'm pre-emptively guessing wouldn't really work with the theme?), he instead is a masterful fighter pilot of a small, deadly spaceship. Another big difference would obviously be this he's grown up on and the history behind it.

Since Earth would obviously be a different place in this AU, his home planet would instead be...

TEPPELIN

A planet once ravaged by a great intergalactic war that left it an arid wasteland with only a few natural flora and fauna. For the most part, the planet's native inhabitants have been to driven to live in dark, closed in locations such as underground, within the caves of mountains and the crevices of canyons, all places away from the hot, beating sun. In spite of this isolation, it has by no means left the people primitive or ignorant to the worlds beyond. Still technologically advanced, yet isolated, the planet of Teppelin was seemingly aided by the arrival of Federation forces, who quickly connected Teppelin once again to the rest of the galaxy.

The Federation established a great trade city around the largest oasis of the planet, and it has become a notable attraction for many in that solar system. The city, known as Tengen, is a highly advanced and wealthy destination, mostly populated by the rich and studious. Architecturally, Tengen is the jewel of the planet, a beautiful, spiraling metropolis with building stretching high in the sky, as if to pierce the very heavens themselves. Many raised within the city's protective walls go on to become some of the galaxy's greatest engineers and technicians, as well as specialized weapons manufacturers and experts in the Federation military. Needless to say, it proves itself to be one of the Federation's most useful and treasured colonies.

However, the Federation so far has done little to aid the indigenous people. Outside of the city walls, people are left to fend for themselves against the threat of beast-like pirates who have suddenly appeared with the arrival of the Federation. Although permitted into the city, most Teppelin natives are considered somewhat backwards to the rest of civilization, and are in most cases treated like second-class citizens: a Teppelin native must excel above and beyond to get to any job higher than the service industry, living conditions are cheap and scarce, often in only the poorest ends of the city, and education, while not forbidding, proves difficult for a Teppelin resident to continue along with as tuition grows with age, and prejudice along with it. Such deeply-rooted trials left the Natives with little choice; either return out to the harrowing wastes, unprotected and secluded to a meager existence, or succumb to a life of crime, thieving or pirating just to get by, self-fulfilling the chagrin and prejudice the Colonials had forced upon them.

And so, although Teppelin was once again colonized and propagating, it was with a new, foreign generation rather than the ones of old...

Sooo....yeah. I hope that came out as good as it sounded in my head.

Please, tell me what you all think. Whether it sounds like something out of a crappy fanfiction or if it actually sounded sort of good. Whether there's anything I might need to work on for it or if there is anything else I need to expand upon!

Okay, first thing that I think will be most important to work out (because we're obviously going to run into them at some point), who are the Council of Five exactly, and who runs the Rebellion? My idea is that the Five were, back in the founding of the Federation, elected democratically. However, after that election they never seemed to run one again, which their propaganda department is perfectly willing the need of elections to spin as pointless frivolity or unneeded in wartime scenarios (and they're always at war with someone). The council nowadays simply chooses their replacements when one of them feels that it's time to go (or are forcibly removed from office by the other four's conspirations). While the temptation is to make the council five old British guys, I'll leave it up to someone else to decide exactly who they are physically.

My idea for the Rebellion is that it's run by a singular, charismatic figurehead. Someone that would be able to convince you to die for the cause you believe in: his cause. The ambiguity that we seek is that he's also the main corporate sponsor of the rebellion through his shipyard business, and the reason why they have enough ships to even begin contesting the federation. This naturally leads to questions like "is he only in it to make a profit" and "how much power would he take in a post-Rebellion government". As to whether or not those assumptions are correct, I'll let the GM decide.

Lastly, yes, I DO want to create a race of hive-mind beings with a unique twist! Namely, I'd like to adapt the Xenomorphs as an intelligent race, similar to what was described in the original script of Alien. Essentially, they would have come from some remote corner of the galaxy, appearing only recently. While they still reproduce in the same violent manner, the Federation is willing to ignore this by sending resources to the Hive-Governments in return for conscription of their population (highly sought after due to their natural martial prowess) and the hives intentionally directing their expansion efforts towards non-Federation aligned worlds. Culturally, instead of being entirely instinctual animals, the average drone is about as intelligent as a human, but entirely subservient to the advancement of the hive. Their reproductive means put them at odds with a large portion of the galaxy (particularly the Rebellion, who seek to drive them out entirely), and they hold a religious reverence to the whole process. They can live away from the guiding influence of the Queens, but they lack an understanding of non-hive culture. They generally lack names and are assigned one upon integration to the Federation, their unique means of reproduction causes them to be utterly baffled by romance, and they rarely understand the importance of each individual life. If everyone is fine with this race, I would be playing one as a character of course.

Since I've just been playing a lot of Der Langrisser, I'm tempted to work the whole cast and certain central elements into this setting.

For example, the Lushiris System is a system divided into a largely Federation-supporting Rayguard Solar Empire, with the leader, Kaiser Bernhardt being one of the five Councillors of the Federation. However, within the Lushiris System is also an independent planet Kalxath that's rebelling against the Rayguard Empire and because of that is supporting the Alliance. The Rayguard Empire have been incapable of defeating the rebels because of Kalxath being in command of the grand battleship/battle spacestation Langrisser, which the Rayguard Empire is trying to combat by building its match the Al-Hazzard with the combined knowledge of the Federation and the mysterious genius Böser.

Ideas for the Council of Five:

  • Sheev Palpatine: The head honcho of the Council of Five and ultimately the entire Federation. He's the one who ultimately give the final decisions on anything the Federation does and has the power to override his fellow councilmen's decisions during emergency situations. In truth, Palpatine is the remaining head priest of a cult called the Sith, direct nemesis and counterpart to the established Jedi Order. Possibly discovered the secret of immortality, he was the one who orchestrated much of the chaos in the cosmos that led to the forced creation of the Federation 30 years ago. Plans one turning the Federation into a Empire so he can eventually rule the universe under his sadistic iron fist. For now he is keeping his plans and base urges to see the weak and helpless suffer on the down low, waiting for the moment to strike.......

  • Princess Celestia: A member of a race of anthropomorphic equine people, comes from the planet of Equestria and was one of the Council of Five in the Federation's inception. She helped to create the Federation as a means from bringing harmony to the Galaxy, but became dismayed at the atrocities committed by many of the more evil and depraved members of the Federation away from the general public and even under the Council's very nose. She obviously does not trust Palpatine, believing him to be responsible for much of the hidden evil the Federation is involved with at varying capacities and is working at collecting enough evidence to at the very least kick him off the council. As well as improving the lives of those forgotten by the Empire and working to continue all the good facets of the Federation, she has secretly planted her number one student as a member of the Rebel Alliance as a means of eventually getting rid of Palaptine.....

  • Prophet of Truth: Representative of the Council of Five for the Covenant, a major religious group formed by a collective of various races first established by his own race, San 'Shyuum, and the Sangheilli. A closeted bigot of the highest degree, he is chosen to be on the Council because he is the best at hiding his own and his races completely and utter disdain for any and all races that are not beholden to their religion and/or the Forerunners, an ancient technologically advanced race whom the Covenant worship. He especially hates humans with an intense capacity for unknown reasons. Because of these views, most of the time he just comes into Council meetings to throw in his two cents about various topics and only half-heartedly decides on decisions. Eventually plans on activating the Halos, which he believes are the pinnacle of Forerunner technology and, in turn, Holy Grails of his religion, to bring the Covenant down the path of salvation and burn away the rest of the universe.

  • Klaus Wulfenbach: A former scientist, he is a man of intense indomitable will and little time for nonsense and petty debate. The one who established the finalized version of the Stormtrooper protocol, he ultimately wishes for peace and harmony in the Federation by means of metaphorically shoving goodness and decency down people's throats until they gave in and swallowed or choked to death. His background as a poor boy from some particularly bad slums helped shaped his worldview, seeing the only way to keep people truly in line is to make sure all the regular citizens fear the punishment for committing crimes great enough to override desperation and/or boredom, and to prevent and eliminate those in power who abuse their station. Violently if necessary. In fact, if it were not for the other Council Members, Wulfenbach would have arrested and/or executed a lot of the various Senate members and nobility (some were justified, others not so much).

  • Henrietta Lange: A former military commander, "Hetty" is newest member of the Council of Five. While perfectly capable of being a Chessmaster like his fellow Councilmen, most of it involves involves trying to prevent the machinations of the other four from spilling over and completely wrecking the Federation as a whole. She mostly functions to keep the Federation running as smoothly as possible, trying to be fair and just while keeping thing realistic as possible. Unfortunately this mean covering up the actions of some of the Federation's leader lower down ladder and dealing with it before it gets public. Even worse, due to sheer amount of work involved, many instances fall through the cracks beyond her notice, often times on purpose by the hand of others......

Further notes:

  • Celestia, Hetty, and Wulfenbach are the three council members who work the most closely with each another, though with the latter its mostly Teeth-Clenched Teamwork due to the man's zealous nature. Palpatine and Truth, on the other hand, are working completely solo on their own things, and only team up if they share interests on a common nefarious plot. Otherwise, their end goals horribly clash.

  • Wulfenbach's entry into the Council was the only violent entry in the Federation's history. Sick and tired of having so many of his ideas to improve the Empire ignored by the council, he eventually found out the Council member who was blocking his requests, his predecessor Thomas Riddle, then he went to the Council during one of their meeting and shot Riddle (presumably) dead. At this point Palpatine was forced to acknowledge Wulfenbach and the latter eventually became the second newest member of the council.

  • Riddle's (apparent) death and ultimate replacing was both a massive setback and a longterm boon for Palpatine's plans. Setback because Riddle was Palpatine's only co-consipartor within the Council and as well as his top lackey. Boon because Riddle was, at that point, becoming more and more uncontrollable and increasingly unable to hide his truly villainous nature that Palpatine was having immense trouble trying to cover it up as time went on. Plus, Palpatine was afraid Riddle would become direct competition in dominating the universe anyway.

  • Celestia was there at the founding of the Federation and was a member of the very first Council of Five, making her the oldest member and holding her seat for the entirety of the Federation's thirty year history. Palpatine was the first replacement member of the Council, making him the second oldest member, followed by Riddle, Truth, Wulfenbach (who replaced Riddle), and finally Hetty.

  • Celestia was the only member of the original Council to go against Palpatine's membership. She is also the only one who knows about Palpatine's darker ambitions and goals.

  • Completely unknown to Wulfenbach, he is biggest obstacle to Palpatine's plans. Wulfenbach clear and very public disdain for the less proactive upperclass and usually arrogant and snooty nobility makes his extremely popular with the lower classes and average workers and the man's constant drive to push his own reforms almost constantly threatens to undermine Palpatine's authority. However, the Sith Lord is able to turn this to his advantage as by cowing compliance from all the snooty nobility who are not directly loyal to him, and to ensuring further compliance from the snooty nobility that are directly loyal to him with only the mere threat of siccing Wulfenbach on them.

Those ideas for the council are pretty reasonable.

My character idea is a version of Kiriko Shijima from Kamen Rider Drive. In this universe, the equivalent of the SCU would be the Android Crimes Division, an elite stormtrooper unit dealing mostly with crimes related to A.I.s and very high-tech droids. Although they took orders from the Federation, the team had two technicians, Krim Steinbelt and Rinna Sawagami, who made them a lot of technology which the Federation was not completely aware of (they knew they had it but not the full extent of its power and were stopped from ever obtaining it for other uses). Among this technology was a collection of compact droids codenamed "Shift Cars" (their designs were slight novelties due to collective eccentricity among their inventors), a few adaptive weapons and three suits of retractable armour, all of which utilized more advanced nanotechnology. However (before the events of the RP), the ACD grew too aware of the Federation's more nefarious dealings and started to rebel against it, leading to the unit being officially disbanded and all of them being split up and considered fugitives. Kiriko would escape with the Break Gunner and a selection of Shift Cars, as well as the Tridoron (in this AU not a car but a small spaceship), an experimental vehicle utilizing the same technology.

In more world-buildy terms, I'm thinking that the Federation could have more elite teams, like the ACD, specifying in specific threats. While these are stormtroopers in name, they are quite far off in terms of operations, being given more freedom of techniques in exchange for results.

So I decided my Saint of Killers idea wouldn't work out because he'd be too OP and I couldn't figure out how to adapt him to the setting. Anyway, I had an idea to bring in the Space Pirates as mercenaries and scientists working for the Alliance, with my character idea being Ridley.

Zebesians.

At first glance they look like insects, but then you see the deviations. Some have claws, some have mantis-like bladed forelimbs, some have blasters in place of fingers. They come in nearly-identical droves, vat-grown and designed to be the apex predators of the universe.

The native species of Zebes made great strides into the field of bio-engineering at some point in their history. This led to them changing themselves to eliminate what they thought unnecessary. Eventually the scientific community decided that, due to their command of Zebesian genetics, sexual reproduction was outdated and pointless. This sparked a civil war that spanned the planet, coming to a head with the release of a biological agent that rendered every Zebesian sterile.

When the Federation stumbled upon Zebes, they discovered a host of engineered creatures that would easily qualify as biological weapons and a subservient, nearly artificial species that reproduced by cloning. Originally an attempt at diplomacy was made, but moral concerns about the rampant body modification and rumors of Zebesians using less-than-willing test subjects created tension. Zebes almost immediately cut whatever ties with the Federation they had left when its leaders learned of the Alliance. Wanting to further their own goals at any price, High Command offered all their services to the fledgling Alliance, ensuring mutual trust. At least until the war is won.

Zebes High Command consists of a small subgroup of the main race called Omegas. In addition, there are several unique, massive creatures codenamed 'Monsters' in their employ, controlled by the organic computer Mother Brain: Kraid, a colossal reptile with spines that can be fired like missiles, Phantoon, a partially-intangible abomination speculated to be mentally connected to an extradimensional creature, Crocomire, a nearly indestructible six-armed creature with extreme body temperature, Draygon, an aquatic predator capable of asexual reproduction, and of course, the dragon-like Ridley.

Ridley is, unlike the others Monsters, intelligent. In fact, he is one of the premiere scientists of Zebes, and his mutations are of his own design. While he technically serves High Command, he is allowed much more freedom than any other Zebesian, due to his intelligence and combat proficiency. Stories of Ridley from his homeworld date back centuries, and all paint him as a cunning, ruthless individual.

Tl;dr: mad scientists that turned their species into a clone army and made some monsters. Help the Alliance because they think the Alliance will hate them less.

...Hm....while I don't really mind Ud's ideas for the Council, Palpatine especially, I think there shouldn't really be a "Head honcho" or "leader" over the entirety of the Federation, least of all Palpatine. If there had to be one, then they'd have to at least come from the background of a character who is completely lawful, or balanced in moral alignment. Though I'd think really that every member of the Council would be of equal standing, if focused in different fields.

For the Rebellion, I like wikkit's idea that there's a charismatic figurehead, possibly claiming "leadership" over the faction, but I think in reality they're simply more of a symbol or cover for the real brains of the Alliance, which would consist of a number of different members of both idealistic and dubious persuasions. I'd also think that the Rebel Alliance is a lot more informal and un-organized under their basis— as a rebellion to the bureaucratic hierarchy of the Federation, there is no real written law to their proceedings, nor is there much enforcing power among them other than verbal agreements and pacts.

The idealistic find this approach favorable; as a liberal force, leaders can freely propose courses of action for anyone to follow through with. However, the opportunistic find this even more favorable; secret alliances within the Rebellion can go on with no risk of exposure, conducting schemes and plans that benefit them more so than anyone else, if they can convince anyone gullible or like-minded enough to join them. Even so, the freedom of the Rebel Alliance does have it's limits; should a member be proven of conducting grievous crimes that go against the Alliance's very mission, or use the name of the Alliance to conduct business of universally ill-repute, a number of leaders can motion to "blacklist" that member. Said blacklisting leaves the accused without protection of the Alliance, making them nothing more than criminals that anyone can attack without reprehension.

So, my idea for Sveta and her race was that they have their world unified under one monarch, and have had it that way for centuries. Back when the Federation was first formed, the Beastmen were one of the first to pledge their allegiance, and as such have gradually become more and more indoctrinated to the point where they'd literally chuck themselves off a bridge if one of the Council commanded it. Beastmen make up most of the Federation's stealth troops, spies, and assassins, due to their natural quickness (and softness) of foot. Due to their valued positions, the Beastmen live a life of comparative luxury.

Sveta is one of these spies, and is sent to infiltrate the Alliance meeting, but is a bit less indoctrinated than most due to her brother, Volechek, being part of the Alliance, and thus educating her on what life is like for most in the Federation. She's still troubled about it, however, when she's sent to infiltrate the Alliance meeting and report back to her superiors on what was said and who was saying it - disguised, of course. Everyone knows the beastmen are all in the Council's pocket. She would gradually become more swayed by the speaker's words until she eventually becomes determined to help the Alliance, preferably from the inside.

Does that all sound good/valid?

I like your thinking, Mr. Lightdark. The last bit especially, considering that the Federation can essentially do the same thing. It just can't be taken lightly.

I could imagine that while the Council is of equal standing, all of them are trying to vie for total control, even if they intend to use it for perceived good.

I also couldn't imagine why Pointy-Eared Beastmen, Cyborgs, Robots and the like couldn't fit in with the universe, especially considering how both of the franchises we're taking inspiration have all in droves.

Princess Twilight Sparkle would be one of the Rebel Alliance Leaders. As I mentioned earlier, she is actually a plant within the faction by Princess Celestia herself as both a means of taking down the more unsavory parts of the Federation without being bogged down by red tape and public consequence as part of the Sun Princess's long term plan of reforming the Federation as a whole, and to make sure the Alliance does not follow the same path as the Federation, or maybe turn out even worse. Unfortunately for Sparkle, the far more unorganized and unstructured format is absolute murder on her OCPD; the recruitment of outright criminals of varying levels of dubiousness rubs against her more morally and lawfully aligned sensibilities constantly; and her willingness to blacklist members that are revealed to have crossed the line comes off as a little too eager, gaining the ire of a few of her fellow Alliance leaders.

Calling her attempts to bring some form of organization to the Rebellion an uphill battle would be a gross understatement.......

[up]I don't see Celestia herself as wanting control of the entire Federation. See just wants to boot out members of the Council she fears would be the most dangerous if they had any more power than provided (Palpatine first priority, followed by Truth).

In the context of this RP, I am having a bit of trouble weaving Shantae and her universe into all of this, but I have the basic gist of it ready here:

Shantae was born on a developing planet on the outskirts of the galaxy. This planet looks lavish and filled with life on the outside, but on the surface, the planet have to overcome a lot of trials and tribulations. The main source of income of the planet, that being the exporting of fancy apparel, food and goods made from the people there are constantly under seige by rogue robotic engineers and by an aggressive force of space pirates, composed of a mysterious legion of aliens, that the people there have simply named Tinkerbats. These two forces are responsible for having the planet in a perpetual cycle of recession, and in turn making much of the people living there poor.

Their luck changed when the planet's Sultana pledged their allegiance (under intense pressure by all of the local governments there) to the Federation. The Federation promised them protection as long as the goods being exported from this planet was maintained at a high level of quality and the Federation earned a percentage of the profit from the sold goods. They also requested information on the Tinkerbats and what type of lifeforms they were up against.

Shantae was born in Scuttle Town, one of the best port towns of the planet, from a Federation Agent and a merchant decades later as the planet is on its fast track to being fully developed. Her mother was the Guardian of this town and lead her coalition to battle whenever Tinkerbats or Baronians (the engineers of the robots) came to attack Scuttle Town. She rarely knew her mother, as her work as Guardian of Scuttle Town and duties outside the planet was continuously calling her. She was also the niece of a scientist that worked often with the Federation, known only as Mimic. Now as a 16 year old, she is the new guardian of Scuttle Town as a Federation Agent, with her mom disappearing after a mission outside of the planet.

TL:DR - Poor planet gets unpoor because of Federation; Shantae joins because of family.

So if there's anything I need to add or subtract from this, let me know.

Your works are one trope short.

I haven't read through all of your ideas cause I'm currently a bit busy, but I should also say that I wanted to avoid just going for the obvious choices, like Palpatine. It's not that he can't be used, it's just... 'hey, you've got an Empire, you said Star Wars, let's use Palpatine!' See my point? I wanted to go for the less obvious choices, cause those often are the coolest and the ones that can lead to some great moments.

There's a difference. Bojack Horseman is a humanoid horse, and the Star Trek/Wars verses have plenty of 'what if humans had this animal thing' races. What neither one of them have are sentient ponies with magical powers that follow monarchies as a ruling system.
