^^ To elaborate on my point there, here are the two leading options in the crowner side by side for comparison. Due to the composition of the Ash shot any crop is going to look incredibly awkward (whereas Event Horizon is already cropped), which unfortunately reduces the amount of detail we can show by a fair amount.

No, the other one.
I don't think the cropping is the problem, but that that one looks like some kind of relaxation or otherwise private moment, in which case you'd maybe want it dark. On the other hand, a guy who seems to be working would normally be in decent lighting.

I feel the contrast between the lit area and unlit areas of the room better visualise the trope than simply having a dark room; which could just be comes across as a poor quality/underexposed image.
