If the page covers the xpacs then they should be pictured as well assuming they look good. Which is true here so I say go with the new one but change the caption.
It does, although I'd rather do a custom take on that image than go with it as-is, if we went that route, for the reasons I outlined in the OP.

At least someone should segregate the tropes for the main game with the tropes for the expansion packs and put the Expansion pack covers there (just like what they did with Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire). It feels kind of incomplete without pictures for Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

I'm not sure I like the change. I appreciate what was being gone for here (attempting to showcase the heroes from the various add-ons to the game in addition to Gordon Freeman himself), but the image is bearing a logo intended for an asset pack instead of the games themselves, which is weird, the image is oddly slightly desaturated, and the size of the image is 640px wide to boot (well, I mean, that last one's not a huge issue for me, but I know people here take umbrage with that). Caption is a bit dry as well...
